I'm very confused as there are so many greek islands to visit.
please could someone tell me where the best place to visit would be for 1 week, for a couple who like a decent swimming pool and historial sites to visit, possibly would like to go sea canoeing, not too cluby, and not more than an hour away from the airport. any ideas !!???
(have been to Kos and Rhodes)
take a look at Kos the OH and myself like the place and we are past the point of no return you can also da a day trip to Bodrum from there
It's not what I expected from a greek island - needless to say I didn't do my homework and expected lots of green - but it's something really special. It's got the picture-postcard houses, and is a sunken volcano - really interesting and totally beautiful.
thanks for the info but as I stated, have already been to kos and done the volcano and other trips round kos. would like to try another place.
I enjoyed Thassos its the most 'natural' island i've visited where although tourism is obviously catered for you don't get the impression that it's the be all and end all., the locals get on with their busines and tourism is li,e a by product. Its also got some lovely beaches and coves Alyki, Skala Marion and Golden Beach to name just three. We stayed in Limenas (Thassos Town) which was a great base and hired a car (rates were very reasonable), the island is circled by one continuous road that follows the coast and you can drive around its circumference in about an hour and some of the views are fantastic especially up near the monastary. We found the food is better on Thassos than your average Greek Island and the people themselves were freindly, we WILL be going back.

Been to both Santorini and Zakynthos (Zante).
Santorini is very 'picture postcard' but not that much in the way of historical sites, apart from Ancient Thira, which is on top of a....well...either a very big hill, or small mountain!! You can either walk up (took us about one and a half hours...Phew! or you can hire a car and drive up the zig zag road which is on the Kamari side (i think) But nevertheless, it's a great place to visit. We stayed in Perissa, also Kamari is very popular.
Zante is also very nice...Alikes or Alykes...is a good resort, not too 'cluby' it has a very nice sandy beach with shallow waters. As for historical sites, wel Athens is not to far away, and your tour operator, or local companies do overnight trips. Also there is Olympia, which is a good day trip. I'm sure you'll find plenty of historical site at both these places!!
Hope this helps, and have a great time wherever you choose to go
Kefalonia is one of the nicest islands to visit!!! Stile not that much tourist overrun and amazing sceneries all over the islands!!!Check it out!!
Hi bluefairy11! We've been to Zakynthos twice Argassi & Laganas, and went to Santorini last summer. Both islands are great. If you hire a car you can get sround both easily and there is some fantastic scenery - the sunset in Santorini on it's own is something very special. Argassi is what I'd call a family resort - plenty of great accommodation, tavernas and bars galore with something for everyone while still retaining it's Greek charm. Laganas is much more lively and caters more for the youngsters but has a nicer beach than Argassi. We stayed at Kamari in Santorini. Here again there's accommodation to suit everyone. The beach is nice but very dark. Nightime enertainment is very much hotel based, or centered on eating at some fabulous tavernas while watching the beautiful sunset. As has been mentioned Thira is well worth a visit. I know my sister would thoroughly recommend Kasiopi in Corfu if you're going for a week - asmall resort nestled among orange groves. I hope this helps.
As you've been to Rhodes then give Crete a try. There's so much to see and do and you'll need a lot more time than you do in Rhodes to see the the island.
both Samos and Lesvos are both great islands to visit. not so many visitors go Lesvos.
Stay in Lassi for easy access to the capital Argostoli, or for somewhere quieter, Svoronata or Lourdas. All place within 30 minutes of the airport and a geat base for exploring this wonderful island!
