There are so many good restaaurants in KS - hard to choose, but my favourite is definately Happy Elephant in Fisherman's Village Bophut - excellent laid back atmosphere , great seafood and steaks.
I also like Bauhaus in Lamai, 3 monkeys in Chaweng and there is a very basic looking place in Chaweng on the main street not far from Baan Samui hotel , it is called Number 1 and the food is beautiful, good thai fare and it is ridiculously cheap.

Anyone know if Tropical Tree is still there...used to have some great Thai food there on the beach...north end of Chaweng just past the Amari. The chap who ran it (ex Thai Navy) was amazing switching from Thai to English, French, Italian and German languages at the drop of a hat.

We liked the Brazilian restaurant in Chaweng, just because it was a different experience and food was delicious, after meal and floor show we went upstairs to the bar and lolled on the sofas. Great

I did wonder about the Brazilian restaurant the last time we were there. Nice to know it was good.
There was a great restaurant just up from the Chaweng Regent that we have always enjoyed. The name escapes me at the moment. There was always traditional dancing featured in the evening- all the tables in the open air. I wonder if anyone can say what its name it- and if its still good :D

We're just back from our first trip to Thailand - and what a fabulous country ! I can understand why you all love it so much now ! We've already decided that we want to go back hopefully next year ! - or prehaps venture a bit further to Bali ! We've definitly fallen in love with that side of the world though. We stayed on Koh Samui and had a brilliant time - we found there was plenty to do, but if you just wanted to relax you were able to do that aswell...
Foodwise we also liked The Starfish and Coffee in Fishermans Village - we went ther twice! - and thought it was one of the best for decor and atmopshere. We also liked Lanna in Chaweng - it's on the left hand side just after the big Seafood Restaurant which is on the right, just on the corner - not sure if Lanna is the place you're talking about Fiona but it sounds familiar ! The waitresses were dressed in beautiful traditonal Thai dress, and they also had Thai Dancing- the food was excellent. It looks like they're opening a Hotel adjoining the restaurant in July. We enjoyed lots of meals and didn't have one bad one, although obviously some places were better than others ! We found a lovely typical Thai eating place behind the market on the beach road into Chaweng called PeeSoon - The food and especially the fish was excellent, and the staff were very freindly. We had loads to eat there and the whole bill came to under £10 for two of us including a few beers !

Just got back on Sunday from Koh Samui - will post hotel review soon. we stayed at Imperial Samui and I took some recommendations off here for restaurants - if staying there would recommend Beach Love and Charming - the restaurants on the sand about 150 - 200 years right of the hotel and also The Gourmet Terrace - out the main gate, turn right and about 150 yards down the road - this was our favourite of these 3 - the owner is a lovely character, very enjoyable. we also ate at Captain Kirk's in Chaweng which was a great meal. We couldnt believe that we would eat 2 courses, have a singha each and it would only cost 600-700 baht but it does! the food is superb too! We also ate at a small restuarant called The Orient (I think) in Chaweng - this was a great meal too.

I will post a report soon, I have done a hotel review on Imperial Samui. When in Bangkok we stayed at the Montien Riverside hotel which I would also like to review, but its not showing on the list - any chance of adding this?

Uncle Noi's on the main road in Mae Nam. Nothing to look at, but the food is excellent and is dirt cheap.
Accross the road from Starfish and Coffee in Bophut (The decor is great, but the food is average - and expensive for Thai) there is a small roadside 'cafe' serving excellent and cheap Thai food. I can't remember its name.
Generally, i thought the food in some of the more touristy places in Bophut was average. Better stick to the traditional Thai places.

We stayed at The Imperial Samui, this time last year. I will second restaurant "Charming" as being fantastic, we ate lunch there most days, but it is out of the way unless you are staying in a hotel on Chaweng Noi beach. For restaurants on the main strip I would both Eat Sense and Poppies for both Thai cuisine and excellent seafood. Prego, part of the Amari Palm Reef hotel, is the nicest Italian food we've had outside of Italy and so cheap, abot 40-50euros for 3 courses, wine and cocktails. We also eat at Gringos Cantina ( Mexican) and The Cliff, on the road to Lamai. Both were good, the latter being expensive(100e with wine +1 cocktail each). Driving around the island, we ate in Big Johns ,excellent and Rockies resort, also very good. My advice is to pick up a copy of the "Samui Dining Guide" and "Eating on Samui" as soon as you get there, available in most hotels and restaurants.
Have a great time, our only regret is not doing it all again this year, but have the wedding and honeymoon in December, so decided to stick with Europe for our main summer holday. A lesson learned, you may spend more getting to Asia, but save so much in spending money. For us it's off to Vietnam and Bali or Malaysia next summer( can't decide, any recommendations?)
