Hi, I hope someone can help me. My husband and i are trying to organise a surprise for my mum who is 75, she has ALWAYS wanted to go to Egypt and is interested in the history, definately not the sun bathing weather! As neither my husband or myself have ever wanted to visit Egypt we are absolutely at a loss at where to start. As my mum is elderly we dont really want to be in unbearable heat so when do we go? also i have found quite reasonable flights(£700) for all 3 of us in January 2008, is that a good time to travel? These are from Manchester to Luxor. i know my mum would also love to see the pyramids but (how thick do i sound now? )are they in Cairo? I have also found a hotel for the 7 nights called the St Joseph, can anyone comment on this?
I just want to make this a very special trip for my mum who has done so much for me over the years and now that i am in the position to treat her i want to do it right. We aren't wealthy so we really need to keep the cost to the minimum. Any advice at all would be great. Basically is Luxor and the St Joseph the right way to go? and then are we able to arrange a trip to the pyramids while we are there or should we be looking at staying in Cairo. We have to fly from Manchester and would like the weather to be at its most bearable. Thanks for reading my essay and im looking forward to hearing from all you Egypt specialists, also anyone who can convince my husband that he WILL enjoy himself(even with mother in law )would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Jill.
The St Joseph is or used to by used by Thomson/Skytours and is an okay hotel. It's about 10 minutes away from the Luxor temple and about 20 minutes from Karnak temple, which is huge!
The West Bank, where you will be able to see the tombs in the Valley of the Kings etc is on the opposite bank to where the majority of the tourist hotels are and you can either take guided tours with your tour operator or do them independently.
The Pyramids are in Cairo (about 600 miles away) from Luxor. To get there, you would either have to take an internal flight (can be booked quite cheaply on Egyptair's own website) or take the train (around 10hrs of a journey).
The weather in January will be cooler (low 70's) and the evenings may feel a little chilly. I doubt it will be warm enough to swim in the pool unless it is heated.
The pool at the St Joseph is on the roof and there is a bar/snack bar there. The main restaurant is on the ground level and there is a reasonable bar downstairs. We've been in there to eat several times during our holidays to Luxor but there is a great choice of places to eat nearby.
I can recommend John & John's restaurant - situated inside the Gaddis Hotel, just a little further along from the St Joseph. Run by 2 British guys and you get a mountain of food on your plate!
Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the reply. You have been a big help. Jill.
Luxor is definitely the place to come, so much history here with many temples, tombs etc. Also an excellent but small museum.
January would be an excellent time as Cyprus100 said, temps in the 70's daytime, like a really nice Summer's day in the UK. As she mentioned though it can get quite chilly at night so you would need a warm cardi or jacket/fleece.
There have been several bad reviews about the St Joseph on another very popular travel forum, if you need information on that send me a private message. Don't think I can mention rival sites on here! I have a friend who has been coming here to Luxor for many years and always at St Joseph's but not this year and she used to rave about it. So do a little more research about the hotel or check some others out. The Nile Palace[formerly Le Meridian], the New Winter Palace, Sonestas St George or the Sheraton. All good hotels close to the Nile.
We actually went with Thomsons and did a three day cruise on the nile for around £157 three years ago, and this included full board on the boat, all excursions ie Valley of the Kings and all temples from Luxor to Aswaan, then the trip back by coach - best value for money trip we have EVER been on - magic!!!
Cyrpus100... believe the two Johns are now gone!
