Hi Jill

The St Joseph is or used to by used by Thomson/Skytours and is an okay hotel. It's about 10 minutes away from the Luxor temple and about 20 minutes from Karnak temple, which is huge!

The West Bank, where you will be able to see the tombs in the Valley of the Kings etc is on the opposite bank to where the majority of the tourist hotels are and you can either take guided tours with your tour operator or do them independently.

The Pyramids are in Cairo (about 600 miles away) from Luxor. To get there, you would either have to take an internal flight (can be booked quite cheaply on Egyptair's own website) or take the train (around 10hrs of a journey).

The weather in January will be cooler (low 70's) and the evenings may feel a little chilly. I doubt it will be warm enough to swim in the pool unless it is heated.

The pool at the St Joseph is on the roof and there is a bar/snack bar there. The main restaurant is on the ground level and there is a reasonable bar downstairs. We've been in there to eat several times during our holidays to Luxor but there is a great choice of places to eat nearby.

I can recommend John & John's restaurant - situated inside the Gaddis Hotel, just a little further along from the St Joseph. Run by 2 British guys and you get a mountain of food on your plate!

Hope that helps some.

Hi,
Luxor is definitely the place to come, so much history here with many temples, tombs etc. Also an excellent but small museum.
January would be an excellent time as Cyprus100 said, temps in the 70's daytime, like a really nice Summer's day in the UK. As she mentioned though it can get quite chilly at night so you would need a warm cardi or jacket/fleece.
There have been several bad reviews about the St Joseph on another very popular travel forum, if you need information on that send me a private message. Don't think I can mention rival sites on here! I have a friend who has been coming here to Luxor for many years and always at St Joseph's but not this year and she used to rave about it. So do a little more research about the hotel or check some others out. The Nile Palace[formerly Le Meridian], the New Winter Palace, Sonestas St George or the Sheraton. All good hotels close to the Nile.

A while back I was looking for accommodation only in Luxor and am sure it was £321 with THomas Cook for a week for three people sharing, B and B, for the Sonesta St George in October, which is a top class hotel and well situated. Another nice hotel is the Movenpick, around £350... a bit further out but taxis are cheap and abundant! Another is the Sheraton, brilliant view of the nile from the bar... We use to book a taxi, go wherever we were going, got them to pick us up to return to the hotel and pay them then, so that they returned to take us home!

We actually went with Thomsons and did a three day cruise on the nile for around £157 three years ago, and this included full board on the boat, all excursions ie Valley of the Kings and all temples from Luxor to Aswaan, then the trip back by coach - best value for money trip we have EVER been on - magic!!!
