my experience is there isnt too much difference from uk to majorca but you can just occasionally drop on a good rate and commission freein majorca especially palma nova/magaluf.

Thanks daveeboy got a cheap allocation on arrivel holiday so I will play safe and take euro's.

Hi everyone, off to Magaluff in 5 weeks , and plan to take the bulk of my money in Travellers Cheques. Last year I went to Tenerife, and Travellers Cheques were a big debate in the Tenerife Forums at the time.

In the UK, they will all try and sell you Euro Cheques, comission free. they also tell you that you will get face value in resort, but in reality, in Tenerife you get charged comission, sometimes up to 10%!

So the best thing to do (as I did last year) was to buy Sterling Cheques here and pay 1% comission. but over there they changed them comission free at a good rate, better than you can get here. So it worked out better to take Sterling Travellers Cheques...

Just wondering if the same applies for Majorca?

Ive found that sterling travellers cheques are a much better bet abroad,wherever you go You always seem to get a better rate than the local currency cheques.

Have been going to Magaluf for the last five years , You will get charged commision on Travellers Cheques. I would suggest to take as much cash as you feel happy carrying. You will get a better rate.

when you cash in your unused Travellers Cheques you wont pay any charges. Take to much in euros and you pay again to chnage them to sterling.

I have just returned from Puerto Pollenca in Majorca and although we took travellers cheques with us we did not use them as the rate that the exchange bureau's were willing to give on the sterling travellers cheques were just 1.35 euros and also they added a comission charge on top of this of 1 1/2 %.

We were told to use our visa debit card (current account card) in the cash machines (whichby the way were on every street corner). We did this and the exchange rate that we got was fantastic. We got 1.50 euros to the £1 and didn't have to pay to use the cash machine either.

We were informed by friends before we went (this June 2004) that Nationwide Building Society's Flex account was the best around as Nationwide give you a really good exchange rate and also allow their customers to use any of their cards in any cash machine anywhere in the world absolutely free. We were dubious but got one anyway, and when we got back and saw our statement and the exchange rate we couldn't believe how good it was.

We will NEVER take travellers cheques again!!

TESCO will give you £ sterling travellers cheques commission free and will deliver them to your doorstep free of charge as well. (special offer until end of september i think!)

You can then change them in most hotels in the resort commission free and will get a much better exchange rate than for cash.

i have to disagree with RanbySue as I used my switch card at a cash machine on one occassion and got a rubbish exchange rate and got charged a transaction fee.

it also goes without saying that travellers cheques are much more secure

Ahhhh but did you use a Nationwide Card. If not go and get one asap as it is brilliant as there are no charges and the exchange rate is brilliant. Can't recommend it enough.

Unfortunately we tried to exchange £sterling travellers cheques at a number of places and each place gave a very low exchange rate and also charged comission.

i was getting between 1.47 and 1.49 to the £ in the first 2 weeks of july this year, commision free which i thought was brilliant

I am going to Magaluf on saturday and I would like to know which is the better type of currency cheque to take , Sterling or Euro's and can anyone recommend a good place to change them in Magaluf.

I went to palma nova/magaluf last year and i took sterling travellers cheques worked out better.

As for places to exchange them we found a place just by our apartment it was not the cheapest but more convienient, hope someone else can give you advice on the best place for exchange.

Try visiting Palma Nova too while you there you get 2resorts for the price of 1 i would deffo recommend Palma Nova/Magaluf to anyone. Im trying the other side of the island this year off to Cala D'or in 8days.

only trouble taking sterling travellers cheques into the EU is that you are subject to their exchange rate which may not be good and u could be subject to a commission charge.... i always take euro's travellers cheques when i went to Magaluf (and anywhere in the EU)

to be honest Suke i have never taken Euro travellers cheques as i have always thought that sticking to the Sterling ones would be a better option, i would try getting more opinions on them before making your mind up.

We took sterling travellers cheques with us to the costa del sol... we always took euro ones till i found this forum... Glad i did... we got a better rate with no commision... the euro cheques had a 3% commision where we were....
