hi Denny,

yes he did, so it must be fine, i have been prescribed up-to 10mg a day, do you think i should take less? i spoke to the pharmacists today and she recommended to start the Predisolone when the PH flares up! but i don't want to suffer at all, it wouldn't cause any problems if i did would it? Also can you drink on them?

Thanks

Gabri

Gabri, I'd go with the dose the GP gave you, especially this first time. Like I said, I always take mine the first day I get there. It's up to you really when you start them, but I was told by my GP to take them the first day. I did drink when taking them (although I am a not a big drinker.) - If there were a big problem with drinking and taking steroids, The GP would certainly have told you about it.
Please don't worry about it, they will work for you..... Denny

Hi Sarah

Good post and I totally agree with you - why suffer if you dont need to! How much do you take per day - my doc prescribed 5mg per day to start with, see how I got on but I know there are people who take up to 10mg per day.

Ah at last, thanks Luci :tup
For your information, you should avoid alcohol when taking Prednisolone as it can cause serious side effects.
(Steroids) Prednisolone interfers with the metabolism of the liver and alcohol is metabolised by the liver.....need I say any more.?

And one more thing, never ever just stop taking Prednisolone, you should always wean yourself off it and give your body time to adjust, otherwise you can experience withdrawal side effects.

Sanji, Whilst I apreciate your concerns, I have discussed this at length with my GP. He assures me that there is no danger in taking a low dose of steroids, for a short length of time. They do not need to be stopped gradually at this low dose. In every post I have made I have mentioned the need to visit ones own GP and to discuss this problem with them. Steroids are only available on prescription (in the UK), so they would need to visit their GP to be prescribed them. There is also nothing in the drug information leaflet that says that drinking alcohol has any adverse affect and I am sure that the GP would mention to his patient if that were the case... Drinking large amounts of alcohol is not good for the body, whether you are taking medication or not. !!
I, like several of the posters here have suffered from this painful and distressing problem for many, many years. It makes me really very miserable and upset and also distresses the rest of my family, when they see me suffering so much...... For the first time in years I have just enjoyed a wonderful holiday without this terrible rash - due to taking these steroids and will continue to take them every holiday unless my GP says otherwise.!

Well said Denny - exactly what I was about to say! My GP was very thorough and explained everything to me and said there would be no problems taking them 2 or 3 times a year and I too will continue to take them until my GP (who I trust completely) tells me otherwise! :sun2

Christine you need to start taking the antihistamine now. I take them for a month before I go and continue taking them throughout the holiday.

Hi, my GP also precribed me antihistamies with the prednisolone as a back up. so they must be ok to take together.
Also they know you are on holiday and that you are going to be drinking, she did not warn me against it. My Grandad is also on prednisolone although a much higher dosage than any of us have been percribed for much serious reasons than our awful prickly heat and he asked if he could drink on this medication and they it was fine.kelly

Hi Kelly,

that is exactly what my GP has prescribed me, did youR GP suggest to take the prednisolone when the horrid PH flares up??or on the first day you arrive on holiday? what dosage have you been percribed??

I would like to thank everyone on the forum who has suggest to go and see a GP about prednisolone. I thought i would never find a cure and be depressed and in pain on holiday for ever more, but now i hope i have found something to help, thanks to everyone who has mentioned it on here :)

Hi, the doctor percrided me 10mg of prednisolone, when the prickly heat starts, but too be honest I am going to take it when I get there so its in my system before the prickly heat starts.

i think i posted this before (can't find it!) but hubby takes benadryls every day for 2 weeks before he goes and also every day whilst there

it seems to do the trick for him, he has had little flair ups on his arms but it never itches or causes irritation so the build up of anti-histamine works for him

doesn't always work for all but just a tip for you

Hi,
I regularly had prickly heat and used antihistamines etc to no avail. Then I decided to up my suntan factor. I now use factor 25+, often 40. Last year in Egypt temps where in the 50's and I also used factor 50. I didn't get prickly heat once! I use factor 20 even at home in the garden. I find that I still tan, just don't burn so the prickly heat doesn't set in. Works for me.
Hope this helps

When we were in Crete I got it really bad on my arms. the owner of the Hotel told me to follow him(don't get a offer that that often ) It cut some catus and rubbed it on my arms. It smells but by god it works. It was a aloe vera cactus, it has long leaves and you just cut it doen the centre and rub it on the affected part.
