the apts are ok but a bit tired, the staff ok but stoney faced, one thing i will recommend is getting a safety depoist box,i read some reports of sneak thieves and it was the first thing i did(they are in the reception not the room)25 euros you get 10 euros back when you return the key, this was well founded as the people next doors relatives (a row down were burgled and had 700 quid taken, this seems to happen at night and i couldnt figure how they got in,fairly simple as it happens, the rear walkways are about 6 foot from the apts and every apt has concrete lintels sticking out above the bedroom windows, they walk round see whos patio window/small front bedroom window is open,go round the back, climb on the wall jump to the lintel then up onto the roof, across the roof drop down onto the balcony and in or into the small bedroom window,a diy tip you might find useful, you are provided with a plastic clothes maid,if you take this inside and lean it against the fixed patio window the heavy drapes hold it in place and the opening patio door only then opens about 4" ,it gave me piece of mind anyway ;0) if you have a look you will see there are private apts as well, they are easily recognised just look for the ones with bars over every window, this is just to make you aware,i have the feeling if you get a safety depoist box you probably wont get burgled, cynical i know but...
other than that never saw any african women in the park, few touts but ignore them, the 2 4 1 drinks cost you exactly the same as 4 drinks, weather was 30+ everyday, dont worry you'll be fine,el toros excellent for steak, and had a lovely seabass meal down by the port
hope that helps

you do not say what age the kids are but puerto rico is very much child orientated top of the hill up by the europa is good for families apts worth noting are the rio sol, great views lovely pools and roomy sun terraces 2 bedroom apts have massive balconies altamar also good for families with entertainment. puerto azul is near the top but not quite but also very good apartments.
down the bottom you have the new terrazamar suites and sunsuites near the commercial centre these apts are also worth a visit and non stop entertainment for the whole family.
hope this is of some help to you.

1. on the beaches do you get annoyed by the lookie lookies trying to sell you cheap goods??
2. how safe is puerto rico at night eg: police presence , loads of spanish or african people hanging around bars??...im only asking this as playa las americas had no police and loads of spanish fighting with british
3. i expect touts but like tenerife are there touts every 50-100 yards???
4. are the discos and pubs mostly full of holiday makers or again do the spanish and african people make up at least 1/3 of the crowd??..again relating to tenerife
5. i will probably be staying at the carlotta apts which is 200 metres to the centre...how safe is it to walk home??
the reasons i am asking this is that i had a really bad experience in tenerife in 2001 , i would not go back there for a freebie.
thank you to anyone who can help in putting my mind at rest
cheers again...benibob
yeah they answered some of my questions...are you a regular in puerto rico?? can you answer my questions??
Sorry, never been there.
I cant comment about Puerto Rico regarding the African gentlemen that sell you your wares, but I do know that they, as well as other white Europeans will walk along the prom area of Playa del Ingles and try to sell you things.
I would say that you will get a lot of similarities in Gran Canaria that you will get in Tenerife. However, I wouldn't let it put me off. Treat each holiday individually, there are good and bad everywhere.

hi when are you going to the carlotta. me and my husband are going there. we have never been to these apartments before but have been to puerto rico twice before and we love it. there is lookie lookie men but we found as long as you don't make eye contact you are ok. hope you have a great hol.
NO 2 policing is fine, never that much bother. no, not "lots" off spanish or africans.
NO 3 in the centers there are lots off P.R'S yes, but just tell them you have just eaten.
no 4 im a bit older for disco's, but what ive seen, tourists mostly.
NO 5 my mate stays up at the cala dor, not far from the carlotta, he's there twice a year and never has a problem.
I LIKE IT IN PUERTO RICO, AND GO THERE A LOT....GO WITH AN OPEN MIND AND YOU WILL ENJOY.
teh answers above are correct but as for teh discos at the weekend they tend to be mainly populated with a lot of local and workers but during the week mainly tourists , there are only 2 of them in rico thou , Jokers and Fibber Magees but most of the bars in the main centre are open late
We have just come back from a week in Puerto Rico.
We always go for a week after Christmas and its absolutely amazing. We cannot fault it. Temperatures in the high 20's. Sunshine every day.
Beautiful beaches. Fabulous restaurants ( names if you want them).
We never encountered any problems whatsoever.
We look forward to going back each year.
Actually ,if our family was totally "reared" ( nearly there now) we would live there.
Having travelled on sunshine holidays all our lives ...with the kids and recent years just the 2 of us...we find its the nicest place we've ever been.
NOT AT ALL ON AMADORES BEACH(beautiful man made beach just around from main beach), NOT SURE ABOUT THE MAIN BEACH IN PR.
2. how safe is puerto rico at night eg: police presence , loads of spanish or african people hanging around bars??...im only asking this as playa las americas had no police and loads of spanish fighting with british
WE'VE BEEN GOING TO PR FOR 7 YEARS AND NEVER SEEN OR ENCOUNTERED ANY TROUBLE AT ALL.
3. i expect touts but like tenerife are there touts every 50-100 yards???
YES, TOUTS ARE EVERYWHERE- JUST IGNORE AND WALK ON, ALSO LOTS OF PR'S AT NIGHT - USUALLY FRIENDLY AND TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.
4. are the discos and pubs mostly full of holiday makers or again do the spanish and african people make up at least 1/3 of the crowd??..again relating to tenerife
IN MY OPINION, MOSTLY HOLIDAY MAKERS WITH A FEW LOCALS, HAVING SAID THAT WE ONLY GO TO PUBS NOT CLUBS!
5. i will probably be staying at the carlotta apts which is 200 metres to the centre...how safe is it to walk home??
I WOULD SAY AS SAFE AS ANYWHERE - BE SENSIBLE AND VIGILANT AND YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS.
I have never been to Tenerife but my partner has, he says GC is a little bit more sophisticated and not as roudy as Tenerife. Personally I love GC it is what ever you want it to be, we stay up the top beside the EUROPA CENTRE as we find this more family friendly than the bottom part, younger groups or couples would probably prefer the main area at the bottom or even PLAYA DEL INGLES as this has more nightlife than PR.
HOPE THIS HELPS
I did go back to Puerto Rico but still didnt like it - rather have PDI or Maspalomas. Hope that bit of information helps.

I am going to Peurto Rico this March and was wandering how busy will it be?
Are there many clubs/bars open in March?
How many clubs and pubs are there in PR?
First of all i was thinking about pdi but now im thinking pr? can anybody suggest which of these is more livlier as i cant decide .
thanks happy345
Don't worry about bars being open in Puerto Rico. nearly everywhere is open. We have been a few times Jan Feb and March and always very busy. I prefer PR to PDI The beach is nice and Amadores Beach is good a nice walk round the prom 20 mins.
