Hi, Ive just come back from Tenerife after having a wonderful two weeks out there.

Ive been going now for 16 years and this time was the quietist ive ever seen it, some days when we were walking for breakfast there was hardly anyone around, and the taxi drivers are having a rough time too, we got a taxi and the driver was pleased to get a fair.

We spoke to one restaurant owner who is a good friend and he said he was 60% down in the last 3 months and was hoping for a turn around in the summer holidays.

Yes prices have increased and he low exchange rate doesn't help, but we don't mind paying if it's worth it and for me the 1€ a pint bars don't do it for me, id rather spend a little extra and be comfortable.

In my opinion Tenerife has become expensive and quieter in the last 6 or so months but it is a resort I love going and shall be returning in November with a little bit more spending money

I agree with the above post, ive been travelling to tenerife for the last 22 years and missed only the last 2 years including this year.

Due to the current exchange rate, i would need a extra £1000 for the 2 weeks. That is certainly out of the question.

A typical breakdown for my holiday consists of

4 flights(Manchester) £275
1 2 bedroom apartment £900
Spending money £2000

Total Cost £4000 + £1000 extra due to exchange rate.

Now i have booked Mexico and the total cost is £4200 in a 5* complex namely Riu

No brainer for me at present, there are some very greedy bar owners in the south of tenerife who need to take a good look at themselves and see where they are going wrong.

Tourists want value for money, at present they aint getting it.

I've have just got back and can't agree with you on this we paid

2wks 1 bed apartment @ club atlantis £300!
flights with monarch 2 adults 2 kids £900
with £1300 spent there
total £2500
we ate out and had a good drink every night, the most we paid for our evening meal with 2 rounds of drinks was 40 euros
the most i paid for a pint of beer in a bar was 2.50 euros.
Never been to Mexico but to pay £4200 to stay in a complex for 14 nights isn't what i'd consider value for money!
For me you've got to do what you do at home and shop around not every bar owner in tenerife is out to rip you off!.

Was the 2.50 euro for local brew? Is the going rate still about this for cider and what about Carling?

I would rather budget to take more money so you can enjoy yourselves on holiday. 2 adults, 2 kids for 12 days. I don't drink during the day but do enjoy a good night out with entertainment. Not really into restaurants but do like pub grub.

Staying near La Vistas beach area.

Ladyl,

Yeah that was Dorada but it was the most we paid for it,Moonlight was doing Becks Vier @ 1.50 a pint and would definately reccomend the comedy elvis show there laugh a minute and not too creud.Original Wigan Pier were doing 2 big bottles of Bulmers cider for 5 euros and i think the Carling there was 2.50 food there also very good the same can be said about The Sun Inn great food and very well priced,But i think you are staying at the other end of the resort nearer to Los Cristianos to where we were staying near Porto Colon.

You can get a much better deal then that to Mexico try looking harder, you could also do what you've done and book individual flights and holidays/appts to make it cheaper, yes some people would still prefer Spain/Canaries thats their choice (and still a good one) but as i've said in resent posts it's not really the actual Holiday or the islands itself thats the issue but the prices that the locals and to an extent the Ex-pats are charging the tourists.

FWIW I actually think the only way that you will get value for money in the Canaries at the moment is by going All Inclusive, that way you are cutting the rip-offs out, other then that you are either going to need a lot of spending money or you will need to spend some time looking for reasonable priced places, something I'd rather avoid doing when i'm on holiday.

Well, I live in Tenerife and I still maintain that if you are prepared to be a little more careful in your choice of bars/restaurants etc. it is still relatively easy to eat and drink cheaply. And before anyone says it , no, not all of the cheaper bars are dives, there are plenty of good quality bars serving good food and drink in a pleasant environment. I never pay more than 1.50 for a pint and yes, before anyone says again, it is local (Dorada or Reina), which I prefer to Carling etc (what's special about it?) There are places selling Carling for around 2.50 euros (around £2.17 at the current rate) if you must have it.

A couple of good examples in Los Cristianos:
Taylors Lounge Bar in Oasis del Sur great pub grub and service in a very comfortable environment. (Local brew: 1 euro)
The Bistro restaurant, near the underground car-park. Quality food in pleasant surroundings doing a roaring trade since the introduction of the new 7euro for a main course menu.

There are plenty of others but remember, if you are going to some of the newer, trendier places in PDLA, you will pay more (in my opinion, too much). The same applies to entertainment bars where you are paying for the acts in the price of the drinks.

Interesting views all round but just been to Tenerife for 2 weeks and I agree with Cyberhiker re Taylors. Good local beer for 1 euro, no need to drink carling, good food, great staff, all sports on TV and people talk to each other!!! Good for all the family all the time.. before anyone asks, I live in England and am not connected to anyone at Taylors!!! and we will be back there next year because we enjoy Tenerife in May/June. :cheers

I go to Smilieys bar in Funchal appartments Los Cristianos. 90 cents a pint. I am there most nights after 10:00 come in and say hello.

90 cents? TBH at that price I bet that is some horrid stuff and watered down to the max, i'd rather pay a little bit more and get a decent pint, i've been to places like that before.
Reply
Not necessarily. It depends on the bar of course but there are places selling the local brews Dorada & Reina, both good beers for around a euro. Most charge around 1.50 - 2.00 though. I think the bars selling at the lowest prices use it as a 'loss leader' to stimulate trade in the hope that people buy other drinks/food etc. as well.

"watered down to the max"

love it.

Sign of the times if Mikes having to introduce a 7 euro menu.

Club atlantis, say no more. You get what you pay for, same with eating out. Evening meal with 2 rounds of drinks 40 euros, where were you eating for that. I would pay 40 euros just for 2 of us without drinks in Tenerife

Has for Mexico staying in the complex for 2 weeks, try doing your research first. Riu own 4 hotels in the area all different, not tied to one hotel.

Theres nothing you cant tell me about Tenerife i have been going for over 22 year, at present its had it. It will come back given time.

Whats wrong with Club Atlantis then? thought we're talking about value for money!
For someone whos been going to tenerife for 22yrs surely you must know where to go for value for money!

If you can afford to go to Mexico for £4200 every year your alot better off than me as there is no way i could afford that but to pay £2500 every year i can afford no problem.
As for doing my research first its not me going to Mexico so i don't think i'll be bothering with that!

Last year family travelled to Tenerife 4 times, also went to other destinations and some of the other destinations had adopted the euro and when you converted the exchange rate they were all more expensive. This is not just a Tenerife problem its europe wide or maybe worldwide as I have had dollar exchange rates in US varying between $2.00 to $1.50 in the last 12 months. Also have stayed in Club Atlantis several times and enjoyed my stay there just as much as any of the 4 star hotels we have stayed in on Tenerife. Bottom line is people need to shop around more for cheaper bars or restaurants to suit there pocket til the exchange rate improves as it surely will, there's been an improvement as of late

I agree it's a Europe (Euro) wide problem this year, but although the poor exchange rate is largely to blame, hotel prices do seem to have rocketed out of proportion with that. Same hotel in Turkey we used last August has gone up by over a half this year.

Similar story at our usual haunts in Spain, Greece and Canaries. In the end we booked the Caribbean as it was better value, though I object to an 8 hour flight in summer when the Med is 2 hours away !!

Seems that next year prices have calmed down and we got a good deal on the Bahia Principe Tenerife for next Easter. Hopefully the travel operators have been negotiating hard, though conversely I notice that the Caribbean is really expensive for next year.
