Hopefully it will pick up, its my understanding that the other islands are all the same.
Holiday destinations come and go out of favour, Turkey seems to be the one at the moment, and i understand thats getting a little more expensive.
I think holidaymakers in Tenerife are becoming more discerning in their choice of bar/restaurant and some of the tired old karaoke/Brit bars are struggling and those offering better quality and more authentic fare are doing well. These places are not usually found on the front at PDLA though. There are still plenty of reasonably priced places out there, you just need to look.
that was always a very busy place,
The rest seem to struggle, even the old spanish bar on el coronel, (theresa?), that was dirt cheap and scruffy but always seemed to be empty,
i work in import export with a strong bias to the canary is. and trust me when i say, its not as busy as it used to be.
The credit crunch has cut the price of my nights out 90 cents for a pint . If you shop arround theres loads of bargins to be had.
I'm coming to Tenerife in September, any info on places where the drinks are not too expensive would be a great help. I don't mind paying if there's entertainment but can't afford it every night. I'm staying at Club Atlantis
We found it expensive eating out all the time but we thought we are on holiday so just enjoy ourselves, we ate out every night and for 2 of us a couple of drinks and a meal averaged out at 50 euro's. ( you may not think it is expensive but we have only been once before a few years ago)
A bottle of beer and a a cosmopolitan was about 12 euros.
Will return in a year or two it was a lovley hotel and lovely people

Why would people want to go to Tenerife when they can go to far more exotic place for less then half the price - sorry but Euro holidays are no longer a cheap thing to do anymore.
Due to the current exchange rate, i would need a extra £1000 for the 2 weeks. That is certainly out of the question.
A typical breakdown for my holiday consists of
4 flights(Manchester) £275
1 2 bedroom apartment £900
Spending money £2000
Total Cost £4000 + £1000 extra due to exchange rate.
Now i have booked Mexico and the total cost is £4200 in a 5* complex namely Riu
No brainer for me at present, there are some very greedy bar owners in the south of tenerife who need to take a good look at themselves and see where they are going wrong.
Tourists want value for money, at present they aint getting it.
so its the greedy bar owners who have increased your holiday by £1000?
i'd say its more to do with the state of the uk and the worthlessness of the pound myself
I will tell you why I don't go to more exotic places.........because I don't want to!!!
Even if Tenerife cost the same as Jamaica, I'd still go to Tenerife.
Shorter flight, has everything I want, and I love Spanish people.
Just because somewhere is further away does not mean its better!
Mark
As for the other poster blaming the expensive prices on the british economy?? it's a slight contribution but not the main reason, so are you saying the Spanish Islands rely totally on Britain and no one else? The prices have been increasing gradually ever since Spain entered the Euro zone and the fact that many Canarians have basically got greedy with all the Tourist revenue.
Even German and other Europeans have commented about the prices, so in all honesty going AI is possibly the only way in the future.
Why shop at Lidl when you can shop at Sainsburys for cheaper.
Its my choice, yes I would rather pay more to travel to Spain than go to Mexico or Jamaica, it appeals to me more. I have no interest whatsoever in travelling to places like Mexico or Jamaica. Different strokes for different folks!
Oh and I think Lidl is better than Sainsburys as well!
Mark
Why shop at Lidl when you can shop at Sainsburys for cheaper.
i could shop at both, but i don't like Sainsburys as i cant get what i like
Caribbean Holiday v More expensive Spanish Holiday? YOU PREFER THE LATTER = LOL.
What i'm getting at (AS YOU DON'T SEEM TO GET ME) is Tenerife is no longer a cheap place, and people are beginning to realise hence why it's so quiet there now and in recent years so in that respect, said it all.
Tenerife is a wonderful island but shame the prices have put people off - interpretate it how you want.
BTW do you guys live there?
I personally don't want to go to
or anywhere more exotic as you put it, my money, my choiceMexico or Jamaica,
the canaries are dearer just now but if you look about you can still get what you want at a fair price.
so my next holiday will be TENERIFE or GRAN CANARIA (puerto rico)
ps. no i don't stay there
We were in Tenerife over Christmas and New Year and found the prices to be extortionate (see my previous post), not good value for money and food rather tasteless. We were eating in what used to be good quality restaurants in and around The Fanabe area. The food was bland and the meat tough. I always used to rave about the meat we received in Tenerife - not any more.
It has nothing to do with the exchange rate as we have recently returned from the Algarve and found that although prices were high, the food was of a far higher quality. We do not mind paying higher prices for good food and service, but feel ripped off when it falls well below the standard expected for the price. The only places we found as good as previous years, were in Los Abrigos or La Caleta. The bars and restaurants have got greedy, and lax and it has put us off going. We have been visitors on on off for 17 years. PDA and most of the surrounding areas is full of low quality bars and restaurants and it's about time it updated its image. The Del Duche (?) area is far better, but I admit we did not eat here as it was too far away for us to travel at night, perhaps we should have.
We will be going to Majorca for two weeks soon and expect it to be expensive. We won't mind if you get value for money, so not everyone is giving the Eurozone a wide birth because of the poor exchange rate.
I agree it is sometimes better value to go long haul, but sometimes it's really appealing just to get on Easyjet at Liverpool and be in the sun in just over 2.5 hours.
Just because I would rather go to Tenerife than Mexico does not mean I live there, infact if you have seen most of my posts you will notice most of them are about the Costa Dorada as that is my favourite destination (and no I don't live there either).
Its the simple fact that I love the feel of Spain, I feel very much at home and I don't drink in the rip off bars. I do get your point and at no point did I say that Tenerife is offering value for money, but having said that, on my last visit there were plenty of bars offering a pint for 1€, how can you argue with that?
The bigger busier bars that offer entertainment are far more expensive but I rarely drink in these bars so its not a problem.
Its all about if you personally mind paying the prices they are charging and maybe more fool me but I don't mind. It comes back to your Lidl / Sainsburys question, No I won't pay Sainsburys prices because to me its overpriced and not very good quality, very much how you feel about Tenerife, but you'd probably disagree with me about Sainsburys, IMO they are crap.
That is the point I am trying to make - Your not wrong and I'm not wrong - its personal opinion, we are all different and we are entitled to our opinion. You've made yours and I've made mine, its no big deal. I go to work and earn my money and spend it on what I want, same as you do.
I hope you can accept my opinion, I accept yours, were all different - it would be a very boring world if we weren't.

I'm with Mark here and no way would I want to travel for miles to laze round a pool and order my next drink, you could be anywhere. I hated the Dominic Republic and would much rather go to Tenerife or in my case Lanzarote, which btw only cost £372 for the two of us, travelling in July.
I like the Canaries too but i'm not willing to be ripped off and in the current economic climate people will just steer clear of these places putting the genuine people out of business.
P.S Wilsonjennys post was spot on really.

Well surely if you used the genuine people then you wouldn't have any reason to think its a rip off??? Surely if people use the genuine people then the rip off bars will go out of business, not the other way round
