Firstly I fully admit that I cannot be bothered to do full research beofre booking.......BUT.
Some friends are interested in going to Goa for the first time next January.
They asked for my advice (and wifes) for costs of flights and hotels etc rather than a package.
I told them what I was paying for next year, i.e 1500 rps per night for double with a/c and tv and comfy beds etc at a smallish hotel in Candoilm. Also said that I had paid £637 each for Qatar flights ex Manchester
They seemed content with this until...... a goan regular spoke to them and claimed that he was paying £6 per night for a double apartment with a/c, tv. washing machine and booked his flights in Goa before he comes home at a cost of no more than £350 each.
I cannot call the guy a liar but although I know that I am paying more than I need to, I can't believe that such prices are still available in Candolim.
I know I was offered rooms at 900 rps but these were all a bit more basic than we wanted
As I had booked as soon as flights were opened in the UK I assumed that although I would not get "bargain" last minute prices" I would get "early booking " prices.
Is there really that much difference booking the flights in Goa? He must have booked in Goa within a week or two of me booking in UK.
Not bothered too much re costs as I am happy with what I am paying, but if he is "story telling" he is making me look a bit of a clown with our friends.
So, is he telling porkies or am I a clown?
Flights so far with Jewel in the Crown have shown at £569.50pp for 16th March from Manchester or the week later @ £643.50pp
Wife wants to go with Qatar but can't get prices yet, so going to hang on 'till they show up, but also thinking to jump in at Jewels price of £569.50 ?
If he is paying £6 per night for an apartment,i would guess he is staying long term.As rental rates per month for a 2 bedroom apartment are about 10 - 15000 per month. As for paying £350 return for his flights, maybe last year but certainly not now.
Looks like I had better polish up the big red nose
Del, just checked makemytrip for return prices from Goa to London(same trip, different way round)and the cheapest they got is Rp46949 which works out at £651, so i would say he was dreaming! We paid £350 back in 2009 and prices have shut up since then.
We all meet the person on the next sunbed who has got the bargain of a lifetime but in this case he maybe is building false expectations with a couple of newbies.
I can maybe believe the room being as he claims, if he has used it for years and is staying 3 months but can't see airfare being that much different.
Anyway, I can tell my friends what response I have from asking and they are then forewarned.
thanks everyone.
The place spike is talking about is a smashing wee place we went to see it and were more than happy so you can get places for 900 rupees a night and some smashers at that ...colleen
Generally the ones we saw with both were asking 1200 to 1500 rps.
As I said, I am happy with what I have agreed, the sticky point was this guy telling my firends that £6 was the proper rate and then that they might only budget for that and be dissapointed.
They made enquiries about rooms at the Mermaid restaurant, that they use and seem to have taken a decent offer with them (don't know what it is though), sad that a place can do that to you..
spike wrote:JJ's this year we got at 900rps per day, room only, v.clean, aircool system and fridge, fine for us, and hope to get the same next year with minimal increase.
Spike we have booked JJs for 30 nights from 2 Feb 2012, 945 rs per night, you might get it less as a returning guest. Flying with Qatar, 663 pounds from M/chester,

You can independent apartments really cheap, there is not alot of difference between single and double bedroom, so i'd usually go for two bed apartments just for the extra space you have. I know several that we use for volunteers who give them out normally between 6500 and 9000 per month (215 Rs and 300 Rs per night). The minimum time for these would be a month, although even if you're just staying two weeks, it might be worth booking it for a month (at least ask for a month and if they say it's only free for two weeks then you might fit in and get a better deal). Most of this is done once you get here, which can be scary, otherwise do a bit of searching before you leave for your next visit. Normally our places charge an extra 1000 Rs for using AC.. The next step up although not usually any better would be the price bracket 10,000 to 16,000, you should easily find an apartment for this... Oh, by the way they would also normally include tv, fridge, gas stove and cable (paid separately - maybe 250 Rs a month).
Flights... I have had return flights as little as £297 from LHR to BOM, then you have to get down to Goa... This year though they were more expensive, it's good if you're flexible and keep looking as airlines have special deals and different days of the week are different prices (weekends generally more).
Thanks
Rob
Preacher - have you stayed at JJ's before or had a look at the rooms ? If not they are only a room, if you think you need more space for 30 days, then the Green Peace Enclave just down the lane at the side of JJ's are apartments and I would guess around the same price. Not a bad price you have though as I would expect an increase, and thought it may be have been a lot more.
It seems then he had a bargain - 2 bedrooms - flat screen TV - washing machine - full European kitchen with all appliances - fully screened etc etc etc.
No wonder he is taking it on a long let next season.

Hi Spike
I had a look at a room when we were in Candolim in Feb this year, and as you say just a room, but they seemed quite adequate for the length of time we will be actually be spending in them. The four of is enjoyed meals we had in the restaurant (Friends) and the location was perfect for us. I have now paid the deposit for the 2 rooms, but will certainly have a look at Green Peace Enclave rooms during our stay for future reference.as we are planning on spending a liitle longer in 2012/13 season
Having stayed at JJs yourself have you any room preference?? I think we have been allocated rooms 1 & 2, do you know if these are O/K.
Thanks

I see there's some cheap holidays for goa in nov-dec on icelolly.com
We were about to book when the Qatar flights have gone up another £100pp, now £765 in November ! Starting to look like we will look for a package deal instead of going independantly !
Preacher, sorry for late reply (missed your post) so if you don't get to read this thread I have PM'd you.
