Returned from Goa on Saturday. Overall had a great time. I'm glad to be back and have retuned feeling quite sad. Not because I've come home, but because of some of the attitudes in Goa.
The flight with Monarch was fine. No delays just the usual cramped long flight. Arrived at Goa cleared customes etc quickly and hopped in a taxi. As expected the girls (who have never been before) were completely gob smacked and proceeded to cry at the site of the hotel. They were put in a different one to us as they booked last minute. (IMHO their hotel was fine they just weren't used to Goan standards). We arrived at our hotel (Hotel De Braganza) and I was a little down as it was no where near as nice as the Renton Manor where we stayed last year. We were also not put in the C block that we pre booked (Many thanks for trying anyway Pam). Think we were in S. It was old and dated but the layout was pretty good for our large group. The girls checked out their hotel without even staying a night and came to stay with us. Hotel put extra beds in each living area for 200rs a night. Once this was sorted they cheered up and really started to fall for the chilled out goan way of life. (was a little insulted when the hotel made the girls sign some paper to say the hotel was not responsible if we (as in the lads who they have known for 8years) harmed them in anyway. I'm not going to say anymore on the matter but we were certainly not the people they should have been worrying about!
Once this was sorted and we'd arranged our mopeds we headed strait to Baga beach's Bistro Shack. I was greeted with a lovely warm welcome from all the friends I've made over the past years. Spent the day on the beach chilling out and recovering from the flight. That night we ate at Indian Spice. The food was horrendous and they may as well have had a black and white striped shirts and masks on, the completely robbed us and I still cant work out how they did it (even after finding out tax was added afterwards). I paid 850rs for a Vodka and Coke, Water, and Chicken kebab with rice. Every single person on the table paid at lease 300rs over what their bill should have been. Left feeling like a mug and swore never to make the same mistake again.
I wont report on what we did each day as we crammed in a fair bit for a two week holiday while trying to organise 11 very unorganised people so I'll do paragraphs on the remainder on the holiday.
Baga
Only ate at Bistro's. Love this shack and all the people who work their (along with the long term brits who frequent the shack). Baga seems the safer of the Northern Beaches.
Calangue
Will do my own secton on this as I have a lot to say but will post later. Its is far from good though
Little Vagator
Used to be my favourite beach, now ruined by sellers. For the moment we got their we were surrounded by at least 20 sellers who didn't leave all day. I even climbed on a sun lounger and screamed for them to go away. As they were all females I couldn't physically move them on. Subsequently everyone hated this beach. On the other hand 9bar was great. Had some nice pizza and enjoyed watching the sun set too some goan trance.
Anjuna
Spooky.. As per the news storys very quiet and quite sad place to be. Funny we were offered Coke, E's and Opium the second we got off our bikes???
Arambol
Love this beach. Great trip to get there on the bikes. We head round the cost to the fresh water lake. As per some previous posts no one tried to charge us for swimming in the lake (would have liked to see them try). Friend had his bag stolen though so beware.
Palolem
Went to Palolem for 3 days and 2 nights. Palolem is paradise. I loved it. So much more chilled out than BCC. We stayed at Ciarans Shacks which were expensive but AMAZING! The man who greets you and takes payment was really nice. Helped me work out all the confusing £'s to RS payments for the 13 people as it did get a little confusing. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the bar staff. They weren't very friendly and certainly didn't make me feel welcome.
In the day we spend most our time at café de mar. Again poor service and food wasn't great ether.
First night we went on a fishing trip which was great. Caught my own fish 3 of them to be precise and took them back to Ciarans. I asked them to put it in a Goan fish curry for me. This was a first time experience for me catching and eating my own fish. Really enjoyed it until the bill came. 400rs for a fish curry for which I provided the fish!!! Told them where to go lol.
Spent the day on the beach and body boarding in the waves. That night we went to a silent disco. Very strange but great experience. So funny when you first arrive and everyone in jumping around on the dance floor to no music. Once we'd had a couple of drinks and rented our headphones I really got into it and enjoyed myself. There are two live DJ's. You can switch channels on the headphones to listen to ether. It looks funny as the guy next to you could be dancing to a completely different song than you. There was also a big screen projecting psychedelic images onto it. You can go round the back and dance. To the dance floor you're just silhouette. Had great fun doing the robot and other cheesy dance moves. You can take your headphones off and listen to everyone laughing.
Delly Belly
Was Ill for 3 days this year. (This is down to the group not letting my eat in the places I'm used to). Was very sad to have lost 10pounds (not good when you weigh as much as I do) and your trying to build up.

An interesting read Mardon, looking forward to the next bit. Hope it got better for you.

Goan Police
Probably best I don't say too much here but I have no faith or respect for the police. While they are in the public eye why are they still trying to demand money off me when I have. My bike documents, my helmet, my English licence AND my international drivers licence???
I wish there was a stronger word I could use other than corrupt scumbags!
Nights Out
With cubana gone (also down to corruption.. or so I'm told again less said the better) I had to find a new place to go out. Really enjoyed cocktails and dreams on tito's road along with Mambos. Really great night out at both of these places. Made friends with the bouncers in Mambos so always felt safe. We never had to pay to get in! But others did. I guess this is because we were a good group and had a couple of pretty females with us.
The water falls
Great trip!!! Early start with a little nap in the taxi. When you arrive you get in 4x4's (we had a great guide) and it's a 40min journey to the falls. You stop off plenty to take photo's of spiders, monkeys and lizards.
The falls themselves are lovely. Really enjoyed my swim in the cool fresh water. On the far right there is a smallish cliff you can jump off into the pool. Great fun! I will post pictures tomorrow when I upload them. We then when to ride the elephants. Didn't enjoy this. Felt the elephants were exploited. Finally we travelled to old goa. Very interesting and somehow looked more modern than current goa???
What has probably put me off returning to North Goa
Increasingly towards the end of the holiday I noticed that a lot of the niceness towards us was completely fake. By the 2nd to last day I had had enough. I think because we were a large group of youngsters 21-26(13) people they thought we were easy money. As I've been before I know the score. The whole time I had to watch that people weren't getting ripped off. 600rs from Clangute roundabout to Baga beach"¦ are you having a laugh?? 500rs for a wristband??? If I weren't there my friends would have been taken for a ride. This made me very angry.
Captains Cabin
I wanted to spend my days in Baga at Bistro's with my very trustworthy friends. Unfortunately the rest of the group took a shine to Captains Cabin due to their free pool table and body boards. IMO the food was poor and from the start I had a bad feeling about the place. I went else where to eat as often as possible (on my own or with one other lad). I'm not too sure how much I can say here on a public forum but we had a major issue on the last day with regards to some of the shack lads and the girls we went with. I'll state now it was not everyone at the shack just three people. But what happened made my blood boil and I had to try harder than I have ever in my life to restrain myself from physical action.
If you want more info on this please PM me.
Feeling Safe
Last two years I was fine and never felt unsafe. This year I was very aware of a shady undercurrent and was offered "Sexy time" or "Boom Boom" on more than one occasion. I was also very upset by the little kids who gyrate in sexual manor on the beach then come asking for money. It made me feel physically sick and deeply deeply saddened me. When It was just me and the girls at night I was followed on numerous occasions and this was scary.
Attitude to women
This is mainly what killed the holiday for me. They two girls I was with are both very pretty and if I'm honest a little naïve. The looks, comments and stairs were sickening. I had to chase off many dirty men with their camera phones. One shack lad even proposed to one of the girls when he was well aware that the girl in question was with me. Why they still went back to that shack I will never know. At the end of the day how can I tell 10 other people what to do on holiday.
At the moment I still feel sad in the pit of my stomach about some of the things that happened but I do still love some of what goa has to offer. I think I made a bad decision in taking some of the people with me to Goa as they didn't quite "get" what its all about.
If I return it will be to the south Palolem, Arambol and my to my friends on Baga beach (who sadly I never got to say goodbye too). Oh and possibly to captains cabin to see if a certain 3 lads still work there. It wont be next year. Maybe in a few years if goa sorts its self out.
So in closing.. Be CAREFUL in my opinion it is not safe out there.. Young girls be very very vigilant and don't trust anyone.
I still had an amazing time. I'll post photo's hopefully tomorrow. Its funny, the girls were oblivious to most of it as I had a full time job of trying to keep it quiet. Most people who went had an amazing time and want to return. The people who have been before have the exact same views as myself.
I wonder what this year would have been like with the original 3 I went with?? The same or better? Was it my company's fault that we attracted bad attention?? Who knows?
I will watch Goa's tourism future with interest.
Great report Mardon, honest observations, but I'm sorry that you have been left feeling rather sad after your holiday.
People are talking of booking to go again next year. Dont think i'll be going. Not sure where. Possibly the Caribbean.
Mardon caribbean is lovely been to lots of different places pm if you need any info. I have PM you.
I'm beginning to wonder what I'll think in a couple of weeks. October was really quiet so I may be in for a bit of a shock. However, at least I won't have to worry about negative attention from anyone- I'm too old for that
I stood and WATCHED them write in the book beside your names that the whole party were to be put, preferably on same floor in Block C! GROWL GROWL!! I'm really cross now! They even told me how many were in your party and date you arrived..as I had said I think it was the day before - so I know they'd got the correct group! It was the girl
Sorry to hear the holiday was not the greatest success. It is interesting ger your perspective on Goa. Someone of my age (50 something) gets a completely different experience in many ways. For instance I have never been aware of any drugs being offered although a friend (also 50 something) visited for the first time 2 weeks ago in Calungute and was asked if he wanted any drugs - very sad.
Let's hope that the recent event out there does something to help clear Goa of the undesirable element that seems to be taking over some areas although I fear the hold they have may be too great with so much money involved.
Candybabe
I've just posted in another thread on here Candybabe..that this was the first year WE were offered drugs too! Walking along Calangute high street in middle of afternoon! Both of us are not going to be seeing 50 again either!
I understand exactly what you are saying mardon we have been going to goa for many years now and we were glad to get home this time dont get me wrong we had a great time but you can feel a undercurrant that we are not wanted there except for our cash felt sad because goa never used to be like this and for the first time i did not feel safe and i am a 47 year old female with my wits about me.I feel there is no going back to the old goa alot of us once knew very very sad

Yes I felt like that after spending 2 weeks at Morjim last year, it was all about money. Something didn't feel quite right, I was also badly in need of some real chill out time and I didn't really get that... just hassle and pressure about MY money. I now feel that there is more of India to be discovered... Kerala/Sri Lanka?
We had two holidays to Goa last year, the 2nd one in December because my other half had his 50th birthday.
We both felt that the hotel staff and the shack owners were really only interested in the Russians, because the Russians we were told, tend to only go the once and buy a lot of food and drink in the hotel and buy a lot of stuff from the sellers on the beach. Those of us who have been many times before tend not to spend too much time in the hotel and do not buy much from the sellers. We also left the hotel at night and ate at the local restaurants.
The shack we used a lot over the years where we used to have a good rapport with the owner and his staff, turned out to be a disappointment. The food was rubbish, to the point I developed food poisoning and was a lot more expensive than when we went there in March. The owner's response to our asking why the food was a lot more expensive was because there weren't that many tourists so he had to put up his prices.
Although I just said it appeared the Russians were given all the attention, there were far more beach sellers than in previous years and who would not leave us alone. We usually buy off of the one chap, and we said at the start of our second holiday that because we had bought a lot from him in the March, we wouldn't be buying anything other than t-shirts. He ignored this and kept coming back and pestering us and showing us stuff we really were not interested in. We got to a point where we found it difficult to chill out down on the beach, so towards the end of the second week, we decided we didn't really want to go down to the beach and stayed around the pool or the hotel gardens instead.
One evening we had a taxi to a restaurant that was less than two miles away from the hotel and half way there, the driver said he realised he had made a mistake with the price he quoted us originally and said it would be a further 300 rupees on the top.
Although, overall we did have a lovely holiday, we both felt that something wasn't quite the same any more and that perhaps we would give Goa a miss this year and perhaps we will try Thailand, Bali or the Caribbean instead. Perhaps part of the problem was me; I paid for our holiday and because it was Ian's 50th I wanted it to be really really special, but it wasn't.
I know you cannot expect anywhere to stand still, but we felt that some people were taking the p*ss for example, we had some a*** look down his nose at the 15% tip we left him after paying our restaurant bill. We didn't go there again.

I agree. How times have changed. It used to be candlelight, incense, cows and bikes, now it is neon lights, construction trucks, taxi's and karioke. We went to Baga in December and had booked to go again to Candolim in March. I tried to change it to Kerala but couldn't. We too were sickened by beggars, children gyrating on the beach for money. but worse was europeans cavorting brazenly around in G-strings- old men and young girls, being given full body massages by unqualified beachboys. How people can behave this way in a 3rd world country, showing no respect for local culture I don't know. Indian women dress modestly, the men don't have sex before marriage. How can you wonder at their responses to european women getting their kit off in public, getting drunk, behaving appallingly etc. We have been to Goa many times over the years, but I have had enough now, unless we go south again or to Kerala before these places are ruined too- by us. We may even try Chennai next year, the Madras coast. What a shame, we have ruined paradise. The best days in March were going by scooter to northern beaches. But the prices everywhere have rocketed, still cheap by UK standards, but no longer such value for money. Their are no real friends in Goa, they see you as a meal ticket only now.
mardon....would the two girls in question be one blonde and one brunett, possibly from the liverpool area....Gavin.
so towards the end of the second week, we decided we didn't really want to go down to the beach and stayed around the pool or the hotel gardens instead.
I tried this at an expensive hotel up North but was surrounded by 'vodka drinkers' and hookers smoking ganga at the pool... was not ahappy bunny... especially with food poisoning!
I have to agree with some of the comments on this page and I think we are only hearing the tip of things, there is possibly some greater stories out there that some people hold, who do not know about our world of the Goa forum as a place to share them?
Again sadness is all I can say on hearing your report mardon, but if this what seems in Goa's eyes to be a disastrous season then maybe something next year will rise from this and get things back on track to the Goa that we know, I myself have had a few disappointments this year, with visas to taxi's airport staff, and general contempt for the good paying tourists, so I am holding my breath, as I don't return until next Christmas I am just hoping I read some better reports early part of 08/09 season, mind you we still have 6/7 weeks of this season left.....jxk8
Mardon, very good report.. it seems to be a sad state of affairs here with everything that's going on, I just hope it gets better.... Thanks for your contribution...
