Just checked it out - nice footage. Doesn't seem to be any change from last year. I see the jet skier was close to the shore line again...
The sea also looked calm, what time of day was it ?

It was about 1100 am, I just missed filming some workers who climbed down the ladder on the side of the ship and walked back to shore - that's how shallow it is.

That was really good to see the ugly boat but there is something about it I like .....we onced saw a young man walking out to the boat with tea for his fellow workers on his head ...so it is shallow at times ....colleen

Lots of action now at the Princess, theres a grab dredger digging aroud her stern and a couple of smaller boats up front taking heavy steel hatches and whatnot off to lighten her a bit. There appears to be a lot of workers on board now so it would appear if the long awaited push to move her might be taking place soon Alan

Hi there,
I was in Candolim in February 2008 and that tanker (the River Princess) is still there, causing even more grief to the locals. It is being worked on around the clock. I was told by one of the affected shack managers that the move is to remove all the unnecessary weight and then to raise the vessel with several air bags that have been ordered. When I was there, some unusual weather conditions were causing havoc with the beach around the vicinity of the ship.
The beach was being washed away causing the shacks to almost collapse had the owners not propped them up overnight. The coastline there I am told has changed, and the waves are even affecting the grounds of the Taj Holiday village. They have had to erect a stone wall to protect their beach restaurant, at the cost of thousands of rupees. Even that wall is having difficulty in holding back the tide.
It may be a bit of a tourist attraction, but the damage it is causing is un- forgivable.
Does any one know if any action is being taken against the owners or their insurers? Or is it the case that its only Goa, who cares?
Lion.

That's old news Miranda, and has been discussed at great length on here already. ;)

So now they are thinking of cancelling the latest efforts, what a shambles. At least this company has spent a lot of time and money so far, the first one to do so. If you sack them you are back to square one again, another monsoon, more damage to Sinquerm beach and definatley the last chance to get her off will be gone for good. Then the mine owner will have the last laugh, and get it scrapped in place, what he's been after all along. It will mean disaster for all the surrounding beaches, and another nail in Goas tourism coffin, but on his form, it should'nt bother the tourism minister too much. Alan

I don't understand why the Kingfisher magnate doesn't get involved and kick some a :swear s.

His property will be affected and I understand he's very active in national politics so could score a few brownie points with Goans if he championed the issue. We all know how loud money speaks in India - and he's one of the richest people in India. A fall in tourism will adversely affect the volumes of Kingfisher sold so he will want it sorted for personal and professional reasons.

Why aren't the Goans banging on his door. Or are they? :que

I remember when that first appeared, it was in the Monsoon of 2000.

I walked down the beach road on September 17th - my first day in Goa - nothing was open for tourists and the sand was just a huge bank.

As i walked over the mound where Frank Zappas and Spottys is I remember seeing this huge boat and thinking to myself "this isn't in our brochure!"

Here we are almost 8 years on and nothing has been done.....quite sad really

I think 'they' are understating the consequences. It looks inevitable now that the RP WILL break up at some point and I think it will affect a bit more than Sinquerim-Candolim. With the strong tides imagine all the rust particles floating about.... this will not just be a few hundred metres of coastline it will affect.

Absolutely clueless!!!

I spoke to Captain Nittin at The Wildenest about this, he is an experienced oil tanker captain who informed me that if the RP broke up it would make swimming/paddling hazardous on 50% of the CCB strip... I believe him as well. This isn't scaremongering.

Never knew Goa had a "salvage expert", however his points are valid, No international salvor would even look at it now, they have'nt even tendered the last twice the Gov. asked for quotes. In all likelihood she will break up this monsoon, if there is a big enough storm, and then she will be cut up where she is, as has always been the hidden agenda, and the ruining of the beaches and tourism will not save it. This past season has shown how important fostering tourism is, hence the valiant efforts by the police to tidy up the place by trashing shacks!! Alan

Nittin's no 'salvage expert' but seemed to be very knowledgeable about tankers, the sea etc, and concerned also.

I didn't realise the 'holes' were so big! 10x 4 metres is pretty sizeable. Whatever the size it's worrying for locals anyway... and tourism.

I was surprised to find upon returning home from Goa in February, that we had our own "River Princess" lying just off the Lancashire coast. Bizarrely, it's called the Riverdance and was washed ashore in January storms. It has gone from a 45 degree list to being flat on its side and embedded in the sand. It can't be rescued and will be cut up over a three month period starting soon.

It's not as big as the River Princess, but it's still a sizeable craft and it wasn't carrying oil, but if our wreck can be shifted in 7-8 months, there's something very wrong when it takes 8 years to achieve nothing.

It's that uniquely Indian thing - loads of activity but no result, yet at the same time spinning off rupees to every level of officialdom that continues to bungle it and put at risk the livelihood of those who try to make a living in its shadow.

What a farce :banghead:

Any other tourist destination would have dealt with this situation promptly. No doubt the cover-up starts now regarding the consequences to tourism next season.

The UK has it's own River Princess - the Riverdance which ran aground off Blackpool Beach.
Experts say that they hope to have it removed by next week sometime.

Interesting - very interesting. I had no idea it was still there. :think

Surely they can't allow that to happen, the results on tourism would be catastrophic, doesn't the tourist money count for anything?

I am sorry but :rofl after the debates we have had here I think we all know the answer to that one!
