what a brill weekend. 4 couples, the kids, and 5 dogs. Camping at Shell Island. near Barmouth in Wales.
We love this camp site. It is HUGE and is one of the only camp sites I know of that allow open fires to sit around at night, toasting marshmellows and looking at the stars. It has a nice large beach, sandy and alos lots of rock pools to explore. A harbour where the kids did crab fishing. Shops and cafe, Bar and childrens play area. The Island is huge and there are some lovely secluded spots amoungst the trees or sand dunes you can camp in.
The island is not too comercialised and we love the choice of camping spots.

BUT
they don't take caravans and due to a spinal injury there's no way I can tent camp anymore
You can take camper vans onto shell island as long as it's got an awning which you say you're going to sleep in. It's for insurance purposes the van then becomes a means of transport which is ok for the insurance.

Still sounds wonderful BUT I only have a van so will have to gaze longingly at the site
Probably by going to the CL at Fegla Fach on the south side of the Estuary near Fairbourne and Morfa Mawddach
Dont want to be miles away from loo etc!!! But also would want a nice pitch, pref near the beach.
There is also a toilet block. There are Green Porta-loos dotted all over the Island. We like to camp further away from main area in the dunes near the beach so we always take our toilet tent and porta-loo anyways.
My advice is to go there for a day-trip first if possible and take a drive/walk round the island. It costs £5.00 to access the island for the day (per car).
You can not book to camp on Shell, You just turn up. Only time I have seen people turned away was at Bank Holiday weekend as the island was full.
Hope this helps
