Does Skiathos Town have a beach ?
or do you need to hire a car ? - for a young family.
Thanks

Skiathos has a town beach called Megali Amos which is about 10 minutes walk, but the beaches are all easily reached by the bus from town, each bus stop is near a beach.

Its getting near peak season so hiring a car will make travel easier but the roads will be busy.

Hi yes Skiathos Town does have a beach, just as Naughty says, but this will get very crowded very early on. You can always catch a bus to other beaches (all will get very busy at this time of year) but if you go early in the morning you could miss the rush and have an hour or two before the hordes arrive!! A car will definately be easier to get to various beaches but roads will be busy as Naughty has said.

Naughty - did you manage to get to Skiathos this year? I remember speaking to you via this forum last year and you gave good advice. the island is just as fab as ever and we will be going back next year hopefully.

Is it suitable for families ?

Lots of families go to Skiathos. the beaches are great for kids as most shelve slowly into the sea and the waters are wonderfully clear. If you go on any organised boat trips you can see the dolphins which the kids always love! There are watersports on most beaches, which are good for kids. Evenings can be spent having a drink in harbor side bars and wandering around the harbour watching people doing paintings and drawings etc. Not sure if there are any activities for very young children except playing ball and sand castles! If you go I'm sure you will enjoy it.

On the return flight to UK - Is it right that you stop off in mainland greece to re-fuel ?

also, on subject of beaches - how much do the water taxis cost ? as the thoughts of cramming a family of 4 onto a packed hot bus dont appeal
Reply
Hi yes. Last year we flew to Volos on the way back and this time it was Kavala on the mainland. It didnt take that long really, about an hour onto flying time (including stop off). Take some water to drink and it should be fine.
We didn't use the water taxis this time, but depending which beach you go to about 2 euro each shouldn't be far off.
It depends when you're going and where you are staying as to if you should use the bus!! :yikes If its in Skiathos town going to the bottom beach you should beable to get a seat down and back, all the other stops have to squish on. Mind you it is an experience and worth trying once! And the view from the bus is fab - the scenery will blow you away!! You get on, get your seats and the conductor will come to you for money.

So do you think its ok for a family holiday ? - thats my only concern - I'm not sure if its somewhere where people take children

Yes there are lots of families who go there. the beachs are superb, with watersports and the boat trips are well worth going on. If you stay outside the town ie troulos or Koukanaries the evenings will be more laid back if you go to local tavernas adn the kids can play. Then you can go into Town in the evenings on a much quieter bus if you fancy a change. Some of the hotels in other resorts do their own little boats into Skiathos town every night. I personally love the town in the evenings and you will find lots of families with children there.
Here is a link which tells you what the beaches and area and hotels are like. Have a read and see what you think.

Most peak season flights to Skiathos will refuel on the return trip.

First choice stop at Thessalonika, Excel at Volos, and sometimes Lemnos. Later in the season some of the flights go home via Corfu. Refuelling takes just 40 minutes or so.

Later flights in the season do return non stop, as the load numbers drop they can top up at Skiathos for the return leg.

If the plane is full you will stop on the return trip unless you are on a 757 which has the range and engine power to take off from the runway at Skiathos fully loaded.

The Gatwick Friday morning 07.00am First choice airways is a 757 and returns non stop ...

Cheers for all the help
I really like the look of Skiathos Town - and I think youve persuaded me that there'll be other families there also

The kids will be fine the beaches are excellent and safe, If you go to Asselinos on the north this will have rougher waves due to the prevailing meltemi unless you experience a day when the wind is on the southern beaches - If so go to Asselinos it will be stunning.

Paraskevi and Koukounaries are just fantastic beaches as is Vrommilos and Kolios

I have posted a lot on Skiathos - Just take a look at the previous posts they may be of use.

When in town watch out for the scooters otherwise enjoy !!!

Hi

We are just about to book a late holiday and are really favouring Skiathos. We would probably stay in Troulos and would appreciate it if you could let me know firstly if it is still hot in September - we are going to go on or around the 7th.

Also has anybody stayed at the Mythos apartments? How are they and how well situated are they to the beach, tavernas etc.

Many thanks
Jill

September in Skiathos should be lovely. The burning heat will be gone and it should be pleasantly in the early - mid 70's. Plus you won't have the crowds like July & August so it will be great.

I haven't stayed at the Mythos Apts, but if you google search Mythos apts Skiathos, or even on this site, you should find lots of info and reviews. cheers Jan :)
