Hi Mark & Nicky, to say that I am jealous is an understatement, I am absolutely green with envy wish it was us over there this week, we have been back around about 4 weeks and miss it really very badly, anyway try these out for size, but please have a couple of Hopleaf & Blue Label & Cisk for us.

The Salisbury, High Street, Sliema, (Near Imperial Hotel).

Tony's bar, Sliema Ferries.

Skippers Den, Depiro Street, Sliema, (near the Galaxy Hotel)

The Plough & Anchor, 263 Tower Road, Sliema (near the Plaza-Plaza Regency hotel).

Corner Cafe Bar, Ghar id-dud street, 9near the Preluna Hotel,Sliema).

Mariners, (by the sea nearly opposite the Plough & Anchor).

Nappa Bar, Nazzareno Street, Sliema, (up the road that goes between
Plaza-Plaza Regency Hotel).

Menace The Pub, Alborada Buildings, 10 High Street, Sliema.

Also, if you are thinking about going out for a meal I can highly reccomend Il-Merill restaurant, St Vincent Street, Sliema very close to the ferries, they specialise in Maltese dishes such as Bragioli, Fenek, and lovely fresh fish cooked Maltese style, plus big juicy steaks cooked to perfection and much much more, could get busy Friday night so if you are going best to ring 21 33 21 72 to make your reservation, good food, nice people, non-smoking, and very nice place run by a great chap called Vince with his lovely wife Mary, well worth a visit.

Have loads of fun

Thank you Sliema2, I doubt if we could do all of the bars that you mention but for the sake of Britain I shall try! We will be ringing:Il-Merill restaurant and booking ourselves in for a meal. I shall raise a glass to you whilst we're there.
I'll report back on the meal. wave

Hi Dave, they are both owned by the same people, however, little Tony's doesn't seem to be open much in the evenings at present but big Tony's is, and just to throw a spanner in the works there is also a Tony's bar in St Julians very near the Labour Club and Police Station, oh what I would give for a couple of bottles of Blue Label and Hopleaf right now.

Hi Sliema2 yes I could do a hopleaf right now as well but i'm more your Cisk drinker I did try some of that 1565 lager in one bar last time I was there but it was not as good as the Cisk in my view. Been looking out for a bit of a deal to go over to Malta in October as I feel me and Mrs Holidaymaker never got the best out of our last visit over the new year with the weather being a bit on the cold side.

Hi Dave, yes me & Mrs Sliema2 kind of felt the same, the weather was so bad and cold in February it held us back a little bit, we still went out all day every day but just didn't quite manage to do as much as we normally do, so we have re:booked for September when hopefully it will be scorchio.

Regards
Sliema 2

PS, keep up the "little bits of history" postings, this is really good info for people who don't know Malta, in fact I think it is so good that I might post some myself.

Well we're back now and suffering from depression. Sliema was lovely and although we tried to visit all the bars on Sliema 2's list we only managed 4 of them. It was big tony's that we visited and we did not realise that there is a little tony's until the next day. The Salisbury was a really nice place as was Mariners. Could not find Menace The Pub. We managed to book into Il-Merill restaurant and had an excellent meal. The weather was good but there was still a bit of a cold wind that keeps the temperature down but find a sheltered spot and you will burn!Temperature really drops at night at the moment so if anyone is going over there soon then take a big coat. We flew with Air Malta and had no problems whatsoever, the seating and service was just fine. We have to wait now for four weeks to pass before we return:cry:

Hello Mark & Nicky, I feel fed up for you both, we are not due back in Malta until September and whilst we are going to Italy (Tuscany) in June no where ever feels the same as going home to dear old Malta, any way I am glad that you both had such a great time, we obviously love Sliema and miss it very much when we are not there in fact as I type this posting in my office my Sliema Wanderers footy shirt is hung up in the corner and I have a portrait of Spinola bay on the wall beside me, also, very glad that you managed to get to some of my reccomended places, The Salisbury is a nice pub and Tony the owner is a decent enough bloke once you get to know him, Tony's bar is nice on a summers evening with it's views of Valletta and Mariners is nice to sit outside with a cold beer and gaze across towards Balluta and Spinola bays, glad you made it to Il-Merill did you try the bragioli ? and how was my great mate Vince ?, he is such a great bloke and a really good friend aswell we have known him and Mary for years now, I told him you were coming in and he said he would look our for you both, all in all it sounds like you both had a great time, when are you back over and will you be going to Mellieha next time you go ?.

Regards to you both

Hi tonysbarsliema,

Nice to see you post on this forum.

Well I've being using your place for a quick drink whenever I've been in Malta. With all the passing trade I'm sure you wouldn't know me but I can assure you that I remember way back in the early eighties when you used to 'encourage' people to come into your bar, though I didn't need much encouraging.

I was in Malta during Feb and I did nip in. I shall be staying in the Marina Hotel during August so I have no doubt you'll see me!!! I also remember using Jack's bar many years ago. It's now named something else since a few years ago I heard that Jack and Margaret his wife, had retired. As a 'long standing local' do you know if they are well and still live on Malta?

See you in August so get some good cold hopleaf ready,

Hi Mark, many thanks for your private message it was most appreciated, we also always come in to the bar when we are in Sliema, as BHM Trevor has said please also have some cold Hopleafs and Blue Label ready for us in September, we have very good friends on St Vincent's Street near you whom you probably know and we always pop in for a beer and a Branca Mentha when we are in the area, when we were last in Malta in February we spent quite a lot of time in the bar trying to get warm with the use of whiskey and hot water with a slice of lemon of course, I really like that picture on the wall about the sailors who drank numerous "blues" one day could you actually tell us the story behind this ?, grazzi hafna Mark U narak iktar tard

Hi Mark & Sliema2, :wave

I've also noticed the hand drawn picture on the wall about certain sailors drinking something like 46 'blues'. I've been intrigued by this so when I call in during August, perhaps Mark you'll also explain to me what it's all about?

I don't think 'blues' could possibly refer to Blue Label but more likely some sort of short?? :omg When I find out I'll try a couple of blues but whatever they are, knowing the reputation of our sailors, I've no intention of trying to beat their record! :yikes

Hi Trevor good to hear from you as always mate :D , but I beg to differ on this one, when you go to Tony's bar in August you will see the article that mentions the 40 plus "blues", I seem to remember this actually meaning Blue Label's, my memories of the actual text on the wallare somewhat blurred for obvious reasons  , don't forget that Blue Label often comes in half pint bottles so forty of these would be 20 pints, which although it is a lot of ale could well be achievable by hot thirsty matelots drinking over a long period of time, this amount of beer is possible ( I should know I did something similar during the course of an all day booze up about 15 years ago ouch next day but great fun at the time) :glynis so I firmly believe that under similar circumstances on a red hot Sliema day then determined sailors on a mission could easily of achieved this, but there is only one person who can solve this in the short term so if Mark from the bar could clarify this then that would be great :?: .
