Just got back from Marmaris on Monday and was so surprised how quite it was. Locals saying down approx 40%.
Trouble was less tourists but more hassle.
The world cup and bird flu seemed the word on the street why the bookings were down.
Have been to Marmaris for last 3 years and must say the hassling got on my nreves at times this year.
Went to Bodrum for the day on the hydrofoil and it was so much busier there and great no hassling at all.
Hope you don't mind me asking Shane how long does it take to get to Bodrum and how much does it cost, many thanks Maggie.
yes i just got back from hisaronu this week and it was quieter than last year, the shopkeepers kept asking us why the british werent coming this year, i said probably bird flu, but i think everyone will go back next year.
yeah this is right, and not to good for those working. my husband workings in icmeler and by the biggining of june it is normally really busy especially with the older generation, but less than half the intake at his hotel than this time last year. this means shifts have been cut and wages are less. not good at all
I've just had an idea after reading this thread, if we said when asked why it's quiet that it's because people are fed up of the hassle do you think it might put a stop to it?
I have heard all the theories about bird flu etc. But, one other posibility is the new stricter laws stopping people from taking thier kids out of school during term. I know in May there were hardly any families to be seen.
I went to Olu Deniz during the recent School holidays with my GF and her daughter. Everywhere seemed a lot more quiet than normal. The hotel where i always stay (Blue Star) was dead for the last 4 days. All the main bars were very quiet.
mind you,it is his 1st visit,so he has nothing to compare it with, but his opinion is,that it's quiet.
mind you,i wish i were in,a quiet altinkum,instead of, a busy llandudno
tracy
The same was said in Kalkan though the Hotel we stayed at was full but then again, it only has 18 rooms. We told the locals that the main cause of the lack of British Tourists was down to Bird Flu. Those who watched this Discussion at the time will recall that people were cancelling the holiday to Turkey left, right and centre with a view to going elsewhere. I don't think the World Cup has any bearing on the drop in figures as people who regularly go to Turkey would Book their holiday around this. I am soooooo pleased that we decided to stick by our guns and not cancel our two Bookings. We have just had one great holiday, bring on the next !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok before this goes on to lets have a guess on what it is I will let you know exactly what it is.
Bird flu scare in the UK rags appeared in early January so that kept people from booking.
The people that book in January I would say that 75% at least are booking for May and early June so I will blame the UK rags for the quietness of Turkey at the moment.
Late June and July/August as normal with very little availability for accommodation and as flights were halved as a result of lack of interest in January then the flights that are left are so expensive then hmmm I wonder if there will be any more added.
well im going awat 1st 2 weeks in august and always usually go in june. This is partly due to my sons school getting strickter and partly because he takes his 11 plus in oct
3 weeks ago a few people with youngsters @ Gatwick were surprised @ checkin desk when they were questioned by a woman with a clipboard and a uniformed police officer asking details of names and schools of the children, then passports were checked,i can only assume that the schools were contacted to see if permission was granted for holiday leave ..
what's it like living in a police state????? democracy is about freedom of choice... why dont schools do a 9 to 5 like everybody else? as for being quiet I like it! prices are low and there are deals to be done. Jt is right, the bird flu crap certainly hit bookings at the wrong time. I wrote several posts on the forum trying to allay fears of travelling to Turkey. The government here were open and honest and now they are paying for it. Anyone who is here now are enjoying the high pound..2.85 ytl today and are getting great value for money....good on them for keeping the faith. for those who went elsewhere.... maybe we will see you next year.
Doesnt matter to me whether its busy or quiet - I know we will still have a fantastic time, and at least we know we are putting our money into the tourist industry in Turkey. I for one definately would not have been put off the the bird flu, but lets hope for Turkey's sake things pick up soon.
It took approx 20mins by bus to English Harbour then 1hour 15 mins to Bodrum by hydrofoil. It cost £20 per adult. Kids free. We booked it locally.
Agree the prices have gone up. As everyone considered Turkey really cheap and now it isn't they have gone back to paying more in Spain, Greece etc where they had holidayed before. It won't stop us from going though we love it too much after 15 years of annual visits.

It is truly horrible Chelsea Boy. Survelliance and control increases continually. We really are living in Orwell's vision. There is huge advertising campaign at the moment aimed at evasion and avoidance of things like car tax, benefit fraud, income tax. The adverts are all very similar telling you how computers are watching, tracking constantly + advising people to dog their neighbours in. Completing the permission form to take my 13yr old out of school was a scary and belittling experience i thought too.
Hi Shane, thanks for the reply might give Bodrum a go this year instead of Rhodes.it sounds like Marmaris will be busy as usual in August.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct, and if so, is it really much more quiet than usual this year?
this will actually suit me, will feel a bit sorry for the locals relying on the pounds, but a more peaceful holiday is more appealing to me.
