Michelle, thank you for your reply. It sounds just what we are looking for. I've been doing some research and we can get a flight from our local airport for £522 AI for a standard twin room with a pool view. What are the rooms like - is there anything we should be specifically requesting? We are looking at going on 13 May as it's my mother's 70th birthday on the 15th and every year we go away - hopefully the weather will be bearable at that time of year.

Hi

Weather will be perfect at that time of year and bearable 80s.

As for rooms erm, if you want quiet rooms and your mum walks well i recommend the cactus pool, great views and a pool view, but its about 10 mins walk to reception or the beach. There is a pool near reception that has rooms and you can sit and watch the entertainment at night near the citadel restaurant. Rooms are smaller and i remember going in one of those in august and the ac wasnt good enough, although the room was nice. The rooms near the dome restaurant up the top end near the cactus pool are huge, well most of them are near any pools.

You can email the sonesta beach and ask for a pool view to specifically guarantee the needs of your mum.

Hmm I think room choice would depend on your priorities and your mums walking abilities . I think its fair to say and I'm sure michelle will agree that the sonesta beach has fairly large grounds and whilst the good news is it's flat it could possibly involve a fair bit a walking to and thro if like us you like to make the most of entertainment on offer but also like to wander down for the sea /beach or a stroll into Naama bay . .As michelle says there is a pool outside the main citadel restaurant that is closest to the reception and beach but the pool with entertainment etc is the Blue wave pool that is actually a fair walk in the heat and on the top end . This is also where evening entertainment for kiddies is held . This pool is also very close to the Dome restaurant that isnt as busy (same food). The entertainment when we went in April wasnt up to much by the main citadel restaurant . (Easter)Just a bloke playing the Sax most nights .

Yes the Sax man for romantic nights under the stars is at the Dome restaurant. If you want peace and quiet then the Dome is a good choice to eat at. The waiters are more relaxed and are more attentive as the main citadel gets very very busy.

Even though i stay in the executive rooms now, i stay at the pool near reception as it is right near my room. These rooms are very plush and posh. I do not want to say your mum may not be able to walk far, but if this is an issue then email the hotel for a good size room near reception. Everything will be at your finger tips. If needed, a wheelchair service is available as well.

The shows at the citadel now have improved, it gets very very packed. Some reserving seats from 4pm in the afternoon !!! Also a very nice restaurant opposite my room is on the A1 package near the sauna has a singer as well, a lady that sings everything, this restaurant is called the casablanca.

It is a big complex but although the numbers are in blocks of thousands only holds around 500 rooms. If you need a doctor, we have one there also, very good english, i have used him most times or just popped into say hi.

Hi, we're flying out to the Sonesta Club a week tomorrow :D I was wondering if anyone has any room number recommendations. We would like a quiet room, with patio doors and a balcony, that has a pool view and is south facing (alot to ask for, I know!). We're not fussed how far away from reception or the restaurants we are as we enjoy a bit of a stroll. I'm planning on emailing the hotel next week to make such a request, but if I could supply them with room numbers that would be great.

Also, I've read that you can't get alcoholic drinks at the Sonesta Beach bar. I hope this isn't true, because it's a long trek back to the SCH just for a beer!

Many thanks,

Jayne

Hi Jayne

As far as i remember you cannot get beers around the pool of the sonesta beach, but to be honest i never asked, but i do know on the beach there is a small umbrella with a man who gives drinks out to guests of the sonesta club. Its a small kiosk and is situated on the left as soon as you step foot on the beach, the towel guys are on the right. Do not forget your towel card else you will have a long trek back. They will not give towels out without one, the other option is to bring your own from the club. You can enter the SBR by the back near the casino or walk along the road for 10-15 mins and enter through the front of the hotel where the cannons are.

I wouldnt have a clue which rooms are what facing etc, but i would always email the hotel asap since you are going soon.

Have a nice holiday

Well, we're booked. 13 May for one week, flying from Doncaster, which is great for us - no trip over the Pennines to Manchester. Thanks for your room recommendations. Fortunately, mum is a 70 year old teenager and walks really well. Based on your replies I think we will ask for a room near the Cactus pool - we want a quiet, decent sized room and we don't mind walking at all. Is this near the Dome restaurant (the quieter one)? If we have booked a package holiday through a holiday company, can we request rooms or will the company have certain rooms allocated to it and we will have to have one of those? Also, does anyone know what days the trips go to Cairo? We are there Thursday to Thursday and want to be able to fit this in. Are there any more trips which you can recommend?

Good to see you are booked LS .Yes the Dome restaurant would be close . I emailed the hotel a couple of weeks before with room numbers that michelle recommended and they were exactly what we got .

Hi Michelle,

Many thanks for your reply. It's good to know that you can get towels at the SBR. That'll save us having to carry ours from the SCR.

Also the heads up as to where we can get alcoholic drinks at SBR is very welcome.

I've emailed the hotel this morning requesting a room overlooking the Cactus pool. Hopefully this will be successful.

Can't wait to go now - only 5 more sleeps :D

Hi Firefly

The cactus pool is situated at the Sonesta Beach Resort and Casino NOT the sonesta Club ;)

It does get a bit confusing having two separate hotels so close.

I go around the Sonesta club but have no idea on the blocks of rooms they have as to what they are called.

Hope that helps

I would email the hotel from the sonesta beach resort web page about 1-2 weeks before departure, ask for a large family room near the cactus pool x

could anyone tell me if there is a strict dress code, at the sonesta beach hotel, i know most have dress codes, but turn a blind eye to smart shorts and shirt

No strict code at the sonesta jeppo. As long as you don't go to dinner in a vest and speedos Smart shorts are fine for the evenings . :cheers

Quick question for our resident Sonesta Beach Experts

I am looking at booking this hotel for around 20th September 2010 for myself, husband and 11 year old son. Could I ask a couple of questions please

1. Is there a gym at this resort? (my husband trains daily and has to have a gym wherever he goes)
2. Which type of room will give us a double bed along with a single bed for our son?
3. I like a tot of wine, is wine freely available on All Inclusive or is it only served with meals?

I may think of some more questions - hope you dont mind.

Many thanks
;)

Michelle is the Queen of the Sonesta Beach and I am sure she will be along shortly to help, I will try until then.

1. Is there a gym at this resort? (my husband trains daily and has to have a gym wherever he goes)

There is not a gym in the Sonesta Beach you have to use the one at the Sonesta Club a few minutes away on the other side of the road.

2. Which type of room will give us a double bed along with a single bed for our son?

You want to ask for a Double Double room.

3. I like a tot of wine, is wine freely available on All Inclusive or is it only served with meals?

Was only available with meals the last time we were there.

On the sonesta web page at the sonesta club it shows you the gym, you can use there facilities for that purpose and the discotech.

As Graham says they do offer you red, white and rose wine and as much as you like at lunch and dinner time. If you are extra extra nice to them and choose the same waiter each time, you wont have the house wine, you may get the really gorgeous wine we have in huge glasses as well. After three glasses we were under the table. I do not think we were meant to have it, but we tipped regularly and got treated.

In the reception area there is also a bar in which you can buy it, the better stuff in a glass, in the bar in that area it isnt part of the A1. All spirits, sodas, and beer you can have any time you wont all day up to midnight.

Again Graham mentioned the 'double double" rooms that are with thomson, if you book with another travel agency they maybe called family rooms. There are a lot of different rooms in resort, because although there is just over 500 rooms it equally looks massive and spread out. Two weeks before you depart send them an email from their own web page and ask for the largest family room, the one with a separate bedroom, they are the most spacious. With thomson the price for the double double rooms with a 7 ft bed was £2pppn. with thomas cook it was more around £156 per week. Failing that save your money and email your room, the quietest part of the complex and nice views are by the cactus pools, entertainment and pool activities for the kids and adults is the blue wave pool ..........

Anything you would like to know please ask away, this November will be my 9th time, so know the areas and hotel well :cheers

Thanks for the very useful info Graham & Michelle, its much appreciated.

I am booking with thomsons as they are the cheapest for Sonesta Beach flying from Birmingham. I looked at DIY but on average it works out at least £280 more in total.

I do have a couple more questions.

I do like to relax on the beach - is the beach nice or is it a pebble beach?
Also - do they have irons in the room at all?
I also cant cope without a morning coffee - do they have coffee making facilities in the room or will I have to have a trek to get one in the mornings?

Many thanks
