I love Tenerife, but can't do it this year - we are going to Egypt for the second time now, as it's much better value for us. Tried pricing Tenerife this year, but way more expensive for us, certainly from Scotland, compared with Egypt.
I have thought about it,but my daughter is moving over to work next month,so will still be going to see her.Flight prices are a lot more expensive from Glasgow this year!
I haven't been to Tenerife or Egypt but I would have thought Egypt would be a much more interesting place to go????
only if you want to sit on a beach and eat mcdonalds
I do like an outdoor type of holiday and Tenerife answers my need for seeing beautiful scenery and pushing my body into doing some serious hiking. But the large rowdy resorts and their nightlife leave me cold.
I find both of these holiday destinations interesting but for very different reasons.
only if you want to sit on a beach and eat mcdonalds
Oh dear..............and I thought there were lots of interesting sites to see in Egypt!
Hey Madabout! I am sure there WILL be more to do than eat McD Mc ......Oh I cannot even bring myself to say the name
Unless you can get a good price for an AI hotel in Egypt( Sharm) is no longer cheap. The exchange rate is poor and eating and drinking outside of the AI hotels will work out expensive.
Quotes were more expensive this year, couldn't afford to book with the big tour operators, they wanted £3,700 for 2 adults and 5 teenagers (16-19) 1 week self, catering, in Costa Adeje. Shopped around and booked same accomodation and seperate flights for £2,400 works out about £340 pp, not too bad considering it's August.
We looked at Egypt this year because of the prices (Can't believe it really as we ADORE Tenerife), but the one thing that put us off was the dreaded 'tablet'
Apparently every hotel has a supply of tablets that will cure you of the stomach upset you will get. And yes, we were told by our travel agent that at least one of us will get 'it', that's why the tablets are so readily available. Once taken, the tablet works in under 24hrs and you are fine........no thankyou!!
I wouldn't want an illness at the best of times, let alone on holiday, and if it was one of the kids.........
And you can't guarantee everybody has the same reaction to either the 'bug' or the tablet
So that's why we looked further afield in 'Rife, and booked Costa Los Gigantes Suites and Spa Resort - it's AI, which we wanted, it,s a better price as it's out of the major resorts, and it gives us the opportunity to explore more of our favourite place - win win as far as we're concerned!!

The reason I like Tenerife and Spain in general is the 'Spain' feeling, its so relaxed and I love the atmosphere (I even think the large purpose built resorts are full of atmosphere, in a good way!)
Egypt would just not be my cup of tea, the culture is just to different and I think I would spend the whole holiday trying to 'get into it'.
I have to admit I do like a couple of beers on holiday and going to a Muslim country and drinking in hotels etc. just seems wrong when they don't approve of drinking (When in Rome and all that), therefore I'd rather go somewhere thats fits in with me as a person more.
Fingers crossed I will see Tenerife this year
Our friends came over to see us in Jan just gone, Easy Jet from Manchester was £84 return and had a beautyfull apartment for £195.00.
You just have to keep looking.

Rodz,
Think previous poster was talking about being ill in Egypt not Tenerife.
Thanks

Going to Luxor and Cairo I think you would have to be careful.
The tablet everyone talks about is Antinal, which is not licensed here in the UK and it is actually used by vets
My favourite place is Turkey as its still good value for money and having been here numerous time in the last 20 years I have never been ill here either.
I used to love Tenerife and go every January, that is until my nieces finance was murdered there.
Oh dear..............and I thought there were lots of interesting sites to see in Egypt!
When people talk about a 'cheap' Egypt holiday - I asume they're talking about the 'AI, Sharm' type holiday. If you want to do the 'real' Egypt, from what I've seen, it's not exactly cheap.
kev
Bacon and sausages - because its muslim, not alot of choice at breakfast time.
Wine - apparently my sister said wine in sharm is like medicine
Not alot of choice in restaurants- ie I love tapas and fish is safe to eat in spain, much more variety of foods ie italian, mexican etc in spain.
Not very safe to wander around, an uncomfertable atmosphere, cant just hop on a bus and do visits
Getting the dreaded stomach bug...watching what you drink and eat...
The only appealing things to me in egypt would be:
The weather, luxor pyramides...thats it....
So this is why I am not letting the euro dictate where I am going, will choose costa del sol over anywhere else, sorry I know this is a tenerife post, been to tenerife loved it, hotel vulcano amazing....love to go back there also.
We were in Tenerife over Easter & actually spent less this time than I did two years ago when the € was a lot weaker, nearly all the bars & Resteraunts were doing deals to get you in! You can't grumble at 98 cents a pint
