thank you mike thats great i need all the help i can get
Hi all Found this site with free download. Useful for learning some phrases and words to help you on your holiday. Just visit http://www.byki.com/free_lang_software.pl and follow on screen instructions. I think you will find it of use and its free. Give it a go....................regards...mike......
http://www.byki.com are ok until they start bombarding you with emails trying to entice you to upgrade to their 'premium' packages. Once you enter your email address in that box, which you need to do to use the free services, (you can't enter a false address), thern thats it.....expecxt to be hammered with emails on a daily basis.
I was getting upwards of six emails a day from BYKI.com until I redirected them to my spam folder.
Fair comment, but as you say you redirected them and therefor solved the problem Its not like you`ve just sat down to eat your meal or got in the bath and the phone rings and its them pestering you. At least with e-mail all it takes is a click, just like putting your junk mail from your letter box straight to the shredder! :D..............mike.....
Mike, I was not trying to put down your post. Sorry, if it appeared that way. I jsut wanted to point out that I had downloaded that program, unaware that I would be pestered to upgrade to the full version which is NOT free.
You and I both know you dont get something for nothing and this is the price you pay for a "freebie". I didnt realise at the time I would be bombarded with e-mails until you pointed it out Now anyone looking at these posts will have the choice. All advice is good advice whether you take is up to you. No need for an apoligy mate all the best................mike
To add a different aspect on learning a foreign language, I obtained the disc and book that was free with The Independent a while back and I must say I think it is brilliant. They say you can learn Spanish in 6 weeks if you study for approx 35 mins a day.The book is split into 6 sections so you know what you are supposed to learn each week. The first week I did stick to it and was at the level I should have been (there is a test at the end of each week which you are told how to mark) Since then I have done it at my own pace, taking two weeks to learn the next section instead of a week and I am still progressing quite well. My daughter already speaks Spanish and I can have a resonable conversation with her and i am just over halfway through the course. It is really easy to follow.

Before You Know It. You can download the free software which comprises lists of words with sound. I'm not explaining this very well buttry this as an example. But I warn you, it IS pretty addictive!
If you want to learn words in a foreign language in a fun way, I can recommend
Hi Roseweb, WOW, thanks for that.....Linda x
Roseweb, what a great site and a great way to learn another language, so much so that I have brought the full version of Hindi to help when on holiday in India. Now spend an hour every day practicing and it's so easy to follow with a lot more than the free version, thanks for the recommendation, well worth it, Tony.
Thanks for the feedback, Tony. Being a cheapskate, I've only used the free version. Good luck with the Hindi - puts the rest of us struggling with European languages to shame!
You're so right about the 'before you know it' language course being addictive - I downloaded it from your recommendation and was on the Portuguese section 'til 02:30 this morning !! The one problem I find is that, unless you import the characters for the letter 'e'with an acute accent and 'c' with a cedilla, the program tells you you're wrong and won't let you progress ;have you found a way round this?
P.S. Apologies to Mod for drifting a little off-topic
I am having problems downloading this language site, it installs everything then at the end a window comes up error cant find file, very frustrating as i have tried 4 times and no success. Cheers Jayjan
just had a play with this site it is produced bu Transparent Language [a yank company] it is similar to but not so extensive as my 101 languages of the world [for computer] by the same people Which cost me £75.00 a few years ago and i must say got me out of a few sticky situations
The full Hindi version cost me $45(£22.60) which is quite reasonable, tony.
unless you import the characters for the letter 'e'with an acute accent and 'c' with a cedilla, the program tells you you're wrong and won't let you progress ;have you found a way round this?
I think I did find a way round this but I can't remember what it was. Since we've got our new computer I don't think I've got the program so will have to download it again. Hope I won't have the same problems as you, Jayjan!
The answer might have been something like ...... there was a button you could press to tell the program that actually the answer you'd typed in was correct. Then it would agree with you and allow that spelling.
I'll be back. Sorry, Fiona, haven't started a new thread - can you move the relevant posts onto a new thread yourself, so we don't lose the comments already posted?
every time about the bit that's missing!
Yes, you just click on "Use as Alternative Answer" and it accepts letters without accents, cedillas and tildes. But of course you're only cheating yourself - so try to think
numeric keyboard:
for example:
alt+128 Ã"¡
alt+135 ç
alt+130 e
alt+131 â
Unless you are an old Wordperfect user and can remember the 00xx codes.
Hold down the ALT key + numbers on the for example:
alt+128 Ã"¡
alt+135 ç
alt+130 e
alt+131 â
Unless you are an old Wordperfect user and can remember the 00xx codes.
I've found the Portuguese keyboard facility now and, although it's cumbersome bringing up the accents and cedillas, it can be done. The program is very picky though - if you miss out a full stop at the end of the phrase or fail to start with a capital letter, it rejects the answer as incorrect. By the way if anybody fancies butterflies or cockroaches on toast the next time they're out there,I can help you with your order !!
deluxe version - has anybody bought it and,if so, is it worth the expenditure ??
roseweb, what have you done to me ??? !!!...... 02:55 again this morning and fifteen of the Portuguese modules completed !! I'm very soon going to have to fork out for the Post a Reply
