OK so as promised in the reply to an earlier post here's my report back from our recent trip to Taba. This was one of our best holidays ever - my wife and two children (12 & 14) all agreed. We travelled with Peltours stayed at the Hyatt Regency, which was a beautiful hotel; clean comfortable and the service from everyone was excellent. Here's few highlights and tips:
FOOD: We only dined at the Limoncello where you get the inclusive buffet for the evening meal. If the standard of the food is as good at the A La Carte restaurants then you won't be disappointed. Even the kids (who can be quite fussy eaters thoroughly enjoyed the food). Main courses were varied and replenished frequently so were always hot and fresh. They included things like veal, chicken, beef, different types of casserole, chicken tikka (!), and burgers, pizza, spag. bol., chilli. The desserts were delicious as well. Breakfasts included freshly prepared omelettes, waffles, beautiful fresh bread, cereal etc. For a few of the days there the hotel was at full capacity (some sort of holiday in Israeli which meant that there were many Israeli families there) but we never had to queue long to get seated. When things became really busy they opened up one of the other restaurants to the buffet as well. Lunchtime snacks at the Beach Bar and El Fresco were good and plentiful as well. No signs of any tummy trouble for any of us!
TRIPS: We had 3 days out - Cairo, Petra and the snorkelling trip. The different operators offer more or less the same trips. Trips are not cheap, but then they never are. However, in the past I have paid more for less enjoyable days out. No complaints - if you want to see these places then you have to pay for it.
CAIRO: For Cairo only an overland trip was offered (no flight option which we probably would have taken if there had been a choice). We did the day trip which was long and tiring, but well worth it. It took about 5 hours to get there and 6.5 to get back as we got caught up in the Cairo rush hour, which was an experience in itself! Got back to the hotel at about 12.30 a.m. - they claimed that the coach often arrives back in time to make the restaurant (which closes at 11.00 p.m.), but I find that hard to believe - a snack was provide for the return journey. An excellent buffet lunch is provide at a 5* hotel next to the pyramids. The overnight stay is only an additional $65, inclusive of dinner which would have been good value, but that would have taken up an extra day (this trip arrived back at about 8.30pm the following day) and we would have been too exhausted to make much of the extra evening in Cairo and the trip around old Cairo on the 2nd day wasn't appealing enough to us. Some say that doing the overland one day trip is too much to be enjoyable, the roads are pretty bad and it's not the most exciting of scenery (the novelty of the desolate desert wears off after a couple of hours) - but I feel that if this is likely to be the only chance you'll get to visit the pyramids, then it's worth the effort - one day in Cairo was enough for us - a real experience.
PETRA: again a long day 6.00a.m until about 9.00pm - although again you are told that the coach usually gets back by about 7.30pm. The variable here is the time it takes to cross the borders, which is an experience in itself. This trip is not cheap, about $140 + an additional $70 in exit visa's, tips etc. A few warnings about this one - although you only pass through Israel for about 20mins in each direction, the border security is pretty tight and uncompromising. If you set off the metal detector and don't discover what did it before your next passage through, it is likely that you will be taken off into a cubicle to be strip searched! This happened to about half a dozen on our coach. Secondly you cannot take any food or drink into Jordan. This was not explained to us by the rep. and we (along with many others) wasted a lot of bottled water and snacks. The trees on the Israeli side of the border look well watered! We were also delayed for about an hour on the Jordanian border due to the list of names that the Jordanian tour operator had not tallying with those on the coach. You should all get through on a group visa which is based on details faxed through to Jordan, but may of our names had been jumbled up and we had to be issued with individual visas - e.g. my children's names were on the list, but my wife and I were missing so we had to be issued with individual visas! In all it took nearly 3.5 hours to get from Taba to Aqaba in Jordan (Petra is a further 2.hours away), but 'only' 2.5 hours to cross over back again and on to the hotel. The walk into Petra is long, hot and dusty and certainly an experience you won't forget. Be prepared for this - it may be advertised as a 45min walk through the gorge to get there, but there's still a couple of hours walking until you get through the city to where you get fed. Because of the border delays (which hopefully you will not have to endure) it was nearly 3p.m. before we had lunch, by which time we were starving!! The experience was worth the effort, but be prepared for delays and hassles!
VISAS: Might as well wait until you get there to sort this out if you intend to do the Cairo trip. We got ours in advance from the embassy in London, but there was no real advantage in doing this. Be warned - do the Cairo trip before Petra as your visa becomes invalid once you leave Egypt (unless you have a multiple entry visa). The tour operators seem to organize things so that the Cairo trip is offered before Petra / Jerusalem, but this could be an issue if you are planning to stay for a couple of weeks. A multiple entry visa from the embassy in London is only £3 more (£18) - not sure how easy it would be to explain that you want this at Taba though.
SNORKELLING TRIP: A wonderfully relaxing day after the previous day's trip to Petra. Opportunity for an intro. dive. A brilliant crew who would bend over backwards to help you without being too obtrusive.
Having said that - the snorkelling that you can do from the jetty on the Hyatt beach is quite amazing as well. And for me this is a major plus point for the Hyatt over the other hotels - they all have access to the reef, but not as good as the Hyatt. You can see all types of fish imaginable without the additional cost of taking this boat trip - turtles, lion fish, rays, octopuses, stone fish, parrot fish etc. etc.. A face mask and snorkel from the hotel shop works out at about £25 for what you can get here for about £15. We took our own.
TIPPING/SERVICE: You will have probably read that tipping is expected for nearly everything in Egypt. However this is probably the one place in the world I have travelled where you really want to tip people for the service they provide. The Egyptians we met are the friendliest, most dignified people I have ever come across on holiday and the standard of service you will receive is outstanding. However I must admit that I was a little taken aback when the guy loading our luggage onto the X-ray conveyor belt asked for a tip, as did the guy sticking the baggage labels on a check in! Still, they are so good humoured compared to most airport staff, it gives you an opportunity to off load those remaining Egyption pounds!
That should give you a flavour for what we managed in a most enjoyable week (24th-31st may 2004).
Frazz.
I am going to Hyatt Taba on the 8 of July 2004 and we will be staying there for 14 nights. I was delighted to read your report as we too was wondering at first between Marriot or Hyatt.
Since you have been there, I have a few questions that I hope you will be able to help me with.
1. Do you get bitten at night from mosquitoes? Would you recommend we bring plug in mosquitoes repellant for the room?
2. We have bought our own snorkelling equipments. I got the impression that we can snorkel any time we want. Is that right? Is there any costs involve in snorkelling nearby the hotel? We think this might be the best way to spend most of our time there if we find ourselves with nothing else to do or no more money left to spend.
3. My husband was thinking of playing tennis at night there. Do you have any information on this such as rentals etc.
4. Did you use their gym and spa fascilities? I might be interested in working out in the gym if I feel too guilty after meals. Do guests have free access or do we have to pay to use them?
5. I am sure the room will be equipped with a fridge. However, is there a freezer or at least an ice compartment as well? We are bringing our own kettle as we read it is not provided. I am thinking of bringing ice cubes plastics as well.
I think thats about it at the momment. It would be really helpful if you or anyone could enlighten us on these matters.
Can't wait to go,
Fayazzahra
Thanks for your reply.
I did read your hotel review and due to that, we have equipped ourselves with all the things we think me may need including underwater housing and kettle. What I am trying to say is that your review helped a lot!
Sorry if I keep on asking silly questions, but, since you did say you used the sauna, was that free access or did you have to pay extra?
Thanks again,
fayazzahra
1. Mozzies - didn't see a single biting insect the whole time we were there - apart from a few ants. Doesn't mean to say that you wont, I have no idea when the mozzie season is. Better to go prepared and not use it, we came back with our bottles of insect repellant unopened.
2. Snorkelling from the hotel jetty is brilliant and free - went every day we could. If you want to take a disposable camera, definitely get one here. They were about £15 in the hotel shop, whereas we'd stocked up on a 3 for 2 offer at boots before going at half this price. Just remember to get close to the fish or you'll struggle to figure out what you've taken a picture of!
3. There are tennis courts tucked away in a corner, but we never saw them and don't know the costs. table tennis was free and about as strenuous as we got!
4. Gym is free, various massage courses are extra.
5. No frezzing compartment in fridge. Mini bar reasonably well stcoked and same price as hotel shop / bars.
The waterports centre looks OK if you intend to do watersports. We only spent a short while there while waiting for the snorkelling cruise. Seemed pretty quiet, although there is a bar that does snacks. Quite a few things seemed to be offered including parasailing ($30), sailing ($25 for 1 hour), pedalo ($12/hour), canoe ($8/hour), waterskiing ($20 for 20mins) windsurfing ($15/hour) and various diving options. The snorkelling cruise we did was not cheap ($65 adult/ $35 children), but wonderfully relaxing after our hot and dusty trip to petra the day before.
Really must get round to the hotel report as I notice that a recent one has been posted that didn't rate the food or restaurant service too highly - I must disagree as we thought both were good - I guess it's down to what you expect really.
Neil
We went to this hotel last year and can report:-
1. No mosquitoes in August
2. Take your own snorkelling equipment, you can hire it from the beach hut but it costs $8 per day.
3. There are tennis courts at the back of the hotel - behing block A - my daughter played with the tennis coach in the evenings. Rackets are available from Club olympus
4 There is a gym, never used it,
5. There is a fridge but no freezer. We took a small kettle and herbal teas
The restaurant can get very busy in the evening (the staff said that the Israelis come in at 6.30 and stay all evening!). If you are on half board you get a credit to use at the Tanour lebanese restaurant if you don't wan't to wait in line. We ate there about 5 times and found the food was great, there were no screaming babies and only paid for our drinks. It is much nicer than the main restaurant.
momment. It would be really helpful if you or anyone could enlighten us on these matters.
PS. Snorkel off the jetty and go south about 200/300metres and you might see the turtle!!
Thank you for the replies. Since you all have been in Taba Heigts, what is the situation regarding currency? I know Taba Heights is not fully finished yet, so how is the situation regarding accessibility to more money?
We are thinking of bringing some Egyptian pounds and mostly US Dollars travellers cheque. Is this advisable? How easy is it to pay for things there? Does the hotel provide such bank fascilities? Is there any cash points around?
Thanks and regards,
fayazzahra
We got back on Tuesday - I have posted a short report in hotel reviews. Happy to answer any other questions.
We took a combination of egyptian pounds and travellers cheques. We spent the cash on quadd biking and on visits to other hotels. We charged everything at the hyatt and paid at the end with mastercard in US$. We didn't use the TCs.
Hyatt has a 'bank' on site where you can change money - we didn't need to so not sure of rates/commission.
Have a great holiday.
We took US$ travellers cheques, some eqyptian pounds and also some UK£ cash and found all to be useful.
Would recommend taking some cash as well (either US$ or UK£) just in case.
Neil
There's one thing I'm still not sure about though. I know that I will have to pay for excursions in US$ or UK£. My questions regarding this are :
1. If I bring US$ or UK£ travellers cheques, can I use these to pay for excursions or do I have to change it to cash? Can I change these cheques to US$ & UK£ or can I only change it to Egyptian£? If I can only change it to egyptian pound, I don't see the point of bothering to bring alot of US$ cheques.
2. Will there be any charge if I use my credit cards to pay for excursions?
Thanks again for the replies!!! Can't wait to get there next week.
No idea if there are costs in using your credit card or even in what currency you'll be charged - exchange rates might then affect how good a deal this would be.
No need to get both UK£ and US$ TCs either will do - we got US$ because that's what was recommended to us by the exchange bureau, but in retrospect UK£ TCs would have been fine. If you get UK£ then you won't have to worry about $:£ fluctuations if you need to exchange any excess cheques when you get back.
As I said - the only advantage we came across for US$ over UK£ was when we went to Jordan for the day, where the exchange rate favoured the $. If you don't intend to go there then it won't affect you, even then it didn't really affect us as we didn't spend much.
Neil
Just a quick question please. Can anyone tell me if the casino is open there?
I've read in some brochures/descriptions that its got one, but its not mentioned in others. Hardly any hotel reviews mention it either, so we're wondering if its either not been built yet or maybe closed down?
I did email the Taba tourism website (who mention it) but they didnt reply.
Thanks!
I just came back from Hyatt, Taba Heights and I can confirm that yes, there is a casino in there and it is open. However, thats about it that I can tell you since I did not try it out.
Hope it will shed some light on your concerns.
Regards,
Fayazzahra
Thanks for the reply
I've just read your review of the Hyatt and notice that you did a lot of snorkelling, which is what we are planning on doing. Did you go on a trip to Farun (sp?) island? I've read mixed reviews about it with some saying you just as likely to see the variey of fish at the Hyatt as on the island.
I know you were in an upgraded room for your honeymoon(congratulations by the way!), but did you happen to see in any of the ordinary rooms? Are the twin rooms 2 double beds or 2 single beds? We want to be able to sleep in the same bed ideally, as the holiday is to celebrate our engagement.
Thanks!
Thanks and Congratulations to you too! Briarskeg answered your 'bed' concerns, so, I am going to answer your snorkelling ones.
Yep, we did loads of snorkelling, whenever we have the energy to do so!
And, we went to Farun Island as well, but not for snorkelling, rather, it was for our last two Padi Open Water Skills Dives. Me personally, I was not that impressed underwater wise although we did see a big blue trigger fish there. Apart from that, we did not see a lot of other fishes and we were also brought diving at Maxwell's where the underwater scenery was even better. However, the island from water level point of view is nice, with a little castle on it. The view of Farun Island from the road is even more breathtaking, seen on the way to and from Taba. If you do go away for trips, make sure you keep an eye on the sea to see this!
Thus, whether it is worth it to go or not, it is up to you. Snorkelling wise, we saw more at Hyatt than during diving. But that might be due to reasons being we were new with diving and were still more concern with our skills rather than noticing our surroundings. I think it also depends on the currents and wind conditions. At Hyatt, we observed both good and bad visibilities. During strong currents, there were not many fishes and visibility was poor, but on a calm day, WOWWEE!!
Have fun!!
Harris - as mentioned above, we did the snorkelling trip and had a great time. I must admit that overall we probably saw more fish by swimming off the jetty at the Hyatt than by the island - but since the fish you'll see is very dependent on the sea conditions on any particular day who knows what you may see! We enjoyed everything about the boat trip - but perhaps that was because the day before we'd had a hot and dusty, tiring trip to Petra and just wanted to relax. The weather was perfect and crew delightful and lunch very enjoyable. Also if you're not very confident in the water the crew will help you out and you also get the chance to do a trial dive - this can be decided upon once you've set sail. I wouldn't recommend it just for the snorkelling, but for a relaxing day out it was great. The cost is $65 - not cheap, but all inclusive (don't forget some cash to tip the crew though!)
That does sound reassuring about the beds. We got a free upgrade to a presidential suite last year in Hurgada (dont know how or why - didnt dare ask questions!) and the bed was the size of our spare room in there!! We are paranoid it will be 'pay back time' this year and we'd get 2 singles!
We may do Farun Island as fiance is very interested in diving - so that would be ideal.
If I have any more queries before we go, this is definitely the place to ask - very useful site. Thank you all!
Does anyone know how much the massage treatments are there please? And if anyone had one there, would you recommend it and was it worth the money?
Thanks
As mentioned in my review, we had a complimentary massage per person for 30 minutes. I thought it was fine, however, I'm afraid that is not much help because we never had massages before in our lives. Our masseus (not sure of the spelling, sorry) noticed that as well and she told me due to that reason, she was being gentle to me to avoid aches.
I can only remember the price for 30 minute, which if I'm not mistaken is LE180. There were two types of massages available for that price and those were Thai and Swedish. We took the Thai because it sounded exotic but I wish I had taken Swedish because that one involves aromatherapy oils which to me may lead to better !st time experience? As I said again, I have never had massages and do not know anything about it.
Our masseus were Thais and it was quite relaxing. The massage involved only the backs of our body from head to toe. Maybe longer duration ones you may get more. From the leaflet, I got the impression you can have packeges as well which involves massages for 3 days.
I'm afraid thats all the information I can provide.
Thanks for that, Fayazzahra. We've never had one before either and we may well indulge!!
