Hi there

I wonder if any of you can help me.
I am travelling on 8th May 2011 from Glasgow to Cancun Tom 352 and returning on 16th May Tom 353.
Firstly I would like to know the type of plane it is and secondly does anybody know what the width of the seats are?
I know the pitch and all about the extra leg room but at 5ft nothing that doesn't make much difference to me!

I am a well proportioned lady and am starting to worry about the size of my seat as 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a slipped disc and don't want to be cramped in a tiny seat for 10 hours when my back and legs are already painful.
I have asked Thomsons Airways to be told the seat width is 16 inches which is small for everybody let alone someone like me who has a bit of meat on her bones, not to mention the bad back, trapped nerve and slipped disc.
I am getting myself very worked up, there is no upgrade available on this flight and I'm at the point of cancelling this holiday if it means this seat is infact just 16 inches wide.

Any info would be very much appreciated and would probably give my husband a break as he is worried I'm not going to go which of course means he won't go either!

GLA-CUN-GLA (TOM352/3) are operated by a former First Choice Boeing 767-300/ER. You'll find extensive aircraft information on our What Aircraft? guide (link below). Seat widths are approximately 17.5 inches. The seat widths quoted are for the short haul aircraft. Having flown extensively on these aircraft on flights up to 14 hours duration, I've always found them more than adequate for the job. They are probably the best long haul charter cabins currently in service.

I've looked where you've said, done nothing but search for seat width sizes for long haul for the past 3 days but still can't get an exact width on the seat.
I'm getting close to the point of cancellation to be honest. The thought of being cramped in a tiny seat for 10 hours with my back being as sore as it is fills me with dread and I am not looking forward to this holiday what so ever.
Normally by just under 2 weeks to the holiday I'd have picked up the tickets, got the money organised and repacked my case 4 times, I haven't done any of it as I'm so worried about the seat size. Thompsons have left 2 messages for me to collect the tickets and I've still not been :0(

As Darren has posted, seat widths are approx 17.5 inches. Approx doesn't mean give or take an inch, maybe 0.1 or 0.2 of an inch which is barely noticeable. There was 2 very large gentlemen on our last flight and they managed. Stop worrying. The ex FCA cabins are good, and it is certainly not worth losing all your money over 0.1 or so on an inch.

You don't need to search anymore, it's approximately 17.5 inches as I mentioned previously. I don't carry a tape measure with me for an exact answer, but it's close enough! I wouldn't cancel on the basis of seat width as unless you book a business class seat with a scheduled airline connecting via a US hub, and at considerably more cost (probably more than the cost of your holiday), you won't get a wider seat with any other carrier. Trust the comments on here, you'll be fine. As I mentioned, I've done flights up to 14 hours on these aircraft to the Pacific coast of Mexico that's nearly 4 hours further than Cancun, you won't have a problem. There are plenty of cabin photos linked from our What Aircraft? guide to give you an idea of what to expect. Don't worry, your flights will be fine. It's the 2 weeks between the flights that counts!

My main concern was actually fitting in the seat and being comfortable, ie not having the sides digging in me and putting extra pressure on my hips.
I have always fit into seats before, on the occasion they have been a bit tight depending on who the airline were.
Thomsons on the whole have always been big enough but comfort was a different issue and with a 10 hour stratch ahead of me I'm getting a bit worried. I'm not the best flyer in the world either, I really don't enjoy it at all and spend all the time we are in the air in a state of panic.

Daft question I know, as I'm a Social Worker and really not that interested in planes (sorry) only want to know about them when I'm getting on them which is usually 2 holidays a year, are there any differences in long haul flights as oppossed to short haul with the actual plane? I've never flown long haul before, my longest flight was around 6 hours (Glasgow - Sharm, Manchester - Luxor) and I was about climbing the cabin walls.
We thought this time we would venture further afield and see what was out there instead of going back to the same places all the time.
I was led to believe that the seats were bigger (ie width and pitch) and more comfortable in general but now I'm not sure.

Looks like I'm going to have to take plenty painkillers, stay awake the night before and hope I sleep through this flight!

Given you've only flown short / mid haul before, you're probably expecting a similar experience but 4 or 5 hours longer. That's not the case. You've probably only flown on the narrow-bodied Boeing 757-200 before, you'll be on the much bigger wide-bodied Boeing 767-300/ER. This is a twin-isle medium to long range twin-jet. You'll find the seat width about an inch wider on the long haul aircraft with up to 5 inches more seat pitch. It makes a big difference! You can always raise the arm rest to increase seat width too, although these must be in the down position during take-off and landing. The actual aircraft themselves aren't any different (Boeing 767-300/ER), but the configurations (cabin layout) for long and short haul configured aircraft are different. There are fewer seats on the long haul aircraft to give you more seat pitch, ie legroom and on the ex-FCA ones, the seating is 2-3-2 as oposted to 2-4-2 so the seats are slightly wider giving more elbow room. There's honestly nothing to worry about with long haul flights on these aircraft. If you can manage the 6 hours to SSH on the short / medium haul, you'll be pleasantly surprised when you step onboard your flight to Cancun. If it helps I am very large 21 stone & 6'2" tall and I fit into the FCA longhaul seats and suffer no discomfort, I do not think you will have any problem, I have been as far as Cosdta Rica and the West coast of Mexico which are both longer flights than to the Dom Rep, get the tickets and have a good holiday.

sorry to be a nuisance!! Do you get to choose where you sit when you get to the airport. We are going to use the day-before check in at Manchester. Will we be able to choose our seats, from what i remember last year we got shown the flight plan and picked our own

Seating is pre-allocated prior to check-in (24 hours before) so you won't be able to request seats at check-in. You can select them yourself online up to 60 days before departure or 90 days by phone. More details on Thomsons website.
