We went independently, but sat in on the Thomson's welcome meeting to get an idea what was available. Hubby and MIL took their trip to Gibraltar and hubby said it was excellent, far better than the tour we took of Gib when we visited from a cruise ship.
Can't remember if Puerto Banus is an excursion, but I think it is. There are plenty of agencies on Calle San Miguel, the main street in Torremolinos, where you can get excursions much cheaper than Thomson's.

I have heard several times before that the hotel has had problems with a gastric type bug that affects some people but not others. I and my family did not have any problems when we last visited about 5 or 6 years or so ago and everything was fine for us but we did speak to one other in the hotel who was affected by the 'bug' but did not notice anyone else. In fact we were quite surprised when we saw a programme on tv shortly afterwards about the hotel and the bug and could not believe it was the same hotel we had stayed in.
On the most recent visit - from 25 October to 1 November - we overheard the maid talking on the corridor to the people in the room next to us and saying she hoped the wife was soon feeling better. My grandson became unwell on the 4th day of our holiday. He had just left the kids club and was saying how hungry he was then suddenly vomited! He was intermittently unwell for the rest of the day but by the following day, was back to normal. I do suspect that it may well have been the sun that contributed towards the illness as it was very hot and he did not have any other gastric symptoms at all.
The hotel was very clean and we noticed that there is a constant rolling programme for maintenance / domestic services.
The restaurant is open 08.00 - 10.30 for breakfast; 13.00 - 15.00 for lunch and 18.30 - 21.00 for dinner. The snack bar in the restaurant is open from 11.00 - 24.00. The food was perfectly fine with lots of choices. There is a separate pasta / pizza section, with freshly cooked items. In fact, there are several items freshly cooked at the buffet counters and all the trays are constantly replenished with fresh food. I am vegetarian and had no problems. Everyone who enters the restaurant is given a moist hand wipe but some guests played lip service to this or did not use at all. I think the hotel does lots to improve hygiene but poor personal hygiene standards of some of the guests impede their efforts in some instances. People watching is very enlightening!
The staff were mostly fine, especially once they got to know you. Ok, a couple were a bit more reserved at times but hey, I'm sure we all have 'could do better' days at work at times, I know that I do.
We arranged our own taxi transfer from Malaga airport and were quoted 18 euros when we asked for prices at the taxi stand outside the arrivals hall. We were happy to pay this as we had several cases and were at the hotel in next to no time. Interestingly, the return journey was 15 euros.
Hotel check in was quick and we got a room with a pool view which meant we had the sun all day. The lifts - there are four - are slow and small, but as we were on the second floor it was no hardship to use the stairs.
Internet access is available - not in the hotel but in the hairdressers section, which has 3 terminals. It costs 50 cents for 15 minutes. Downside is that the hairdressers is only open 10.00 - 13.00 and 15.00 - 17.00, closed on Sundays.
Room facilities - no drink making facilities were available but it is easy enough to access the Piano bar on the ground floor near the restaurant, open 09.00 - 24.00 and there is a pool side bar open during the day on the lower ground floor. The Magnum bar on the lower ground floor is open during the day and evenings too, with entertainment.
There is a variety of activities during the day, ie archery and rifle shooting to name a couple. I believe the inside pool is open from beginning November.
Every afternoon and evening, there is a video in the tv room behind reception.
We did not have a remote for the tv in our room but could easily change channels manually. English speaking channels are the usual Sky news and CNM but we could get BBC1 on channel 12 and 54 which was a refreshing change.
We booked hotel and flights independently but accessed the Thomson's welcome meeting and rep.One trip that the children enjoyed was to the Crocodile Park. We purchased tickets from the rep at the hotel, saving 50 cents each. He suggested that we got the local bus which stops outside the hotel entrance into Torremolinos centre at 1.05 euros each, then get a taxi for about 6 euros to the park. Instead, we got hotel reception to order a taxi for us, the fare being 8 euros. The return journey to Torremolinos centre, ordered by the very helpful reception at the Crocodile Park, was 6 euros. We then spent a few hours leisurely shopping before walking back to the hotel. It was a lovely day.
The Beach Club is a good 20 - 30 minutes walk from the centre but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel if anyone wants public transport. It does benefit from being just across the road from the beach and all the rooms I understand have a seaview.
The children loved this holiday and hotel and we will return, hopefully in the not too distant future.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Having stayed at another hotel in Torremolinos where the food was dire, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the Beach Club.

I'm going to the torremolinos beach club at half term in feb with my mum and 2 children and have read very conflicting reports about it. Some people say its brill and some say its horrendous, is there any one who's been just lately who can tell me anything about it and i've also read alot about a "BUG" that seems to be there, does anyone know anything about this either.
Thanks
Julie
Well we really liked the Beach Club as it suited what we were looking for at the time. I don't think I'd like it in summer when it is full of kids though.
There are very good daytime activities which are very well supported. The food is OK, not wonderful, but I usually filled up from the salad bar, although there was also pizza and pasta available.
I'm afraid from the reports that the "bug" is still around. However some people are unlucky and get it and others, like ourselves, escape apart from the first time when hubby had it for 12 hours. It didn't lay him low or anything, was more of an inconvenience. I do feel sorry for those that do get it.
The reps will tell you that it's prevalent in the whole area and is air borne. There is someone at the door of the restaurant handing out anti bacterial wipes and the hotel is clean so I have no idea what causes it.
I would have no hesitation in going back again for a week off season.

Thanks for your reply, it made me feel better, i think that with it being allinclusive some people will over indulge and with too much sun, it could make people ill. I'm not saying that there isn't a bug about, but you can take steps to try to avoid it.
I'll let you know whats its like
Julie
I think whether you think it is great or horrendous is partly down to whether you get the bug or not, but mostly how you react if you do get it. If you think a bit of diarhoea is the end of the world then you will hate it. For us it was just a slight inconvenience for a day.
The Beach Club suits us down to the ground for a quiet week away in winter, especially if we take my elderly disabled MIL. There are loads of daytime activities, the food is OK, not wonderful, and the evening entertainment is not bad as long as you're not looking for a Las Vegas type show. There is bingo every night with a high pay out.
You can get the bus outside the hotel into Torremolinos for €1.10 and get the bus from there to Benalmadena or the train to Malaga or Fuengirola which is very cheap. It's about a 30 mins walk along the front to Torremolinos.
Looking forward to your report and also a hotel review when you get back. Have a great time!

Thomson and TC in massive compensation payout
A court this week officially settled a compensation claim by hundreds of holidaymakers against Thomson, Thomas Cook and other UK operators.
The 790 holidaymakers won a total of more than £2.5 million in compensation after falling ill at a Spanish hotel.
Some caught the norovirus stomach bug and others developed salmonella and campylobacter while staying at the Beach Club Hotel in Torremolinos between 2000 and 2003.
Part of the compensation pay-out is being covered by the hotel itself.
This week, a judge at the High Court in Birmingham ended the case after approving the settlement terms in relation to the babies who became ill.
Thomson and Thomas Cook had both initially denied liability, but offered an out-of-court settlement at the end of last year, just days before the case was due to be heard.
A spokeswoman for Thomson said: "This case was settled at a much reduced amount than originally claimed."
Thomas Cook declined to comment.

Returned yesterday and have just added a review.
Many thanks for the review. Glad you had a good time
We've juct been back a week from the beach club and it was very good apart from the weather, horrendously windy for the full week and rainy on sunday all day!
The hotel was very clean, staff were very friendly and the food, oh my god! i've never seen such a choice, all 4 of us had something different evry meal and no the kids didn't live on chips and burgers infact my daughter whos 5 never even asked for chips, the choice was so good, and the puddings, i think i've put on 3 stone in a week!
None of us got ill, the antiseptic wipes were given out which i think is a very good idea, its a pity more hotels dont do this.
i would go back 2morrow, but if i did i would wish for better weather.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone from 6-60.
If you haven't done so already we would appreciate if you could post a review by clicking on Hotel Reviews at the top of the page.
Thanks.

Hi Can anybody help. I am thinking of booking a week at this hotel but my son is sixteen which means we pay adult price for him. Can anyone tell me if rooms with three beds have three good beds or two & a child bed
I have merged your post with an existing topic.
We were allocated a 3 bedded room at the end of the corridor once and it had 3 full sized beds.
luci
Thanks for that.Did you ask for full size beds or were they just allocated .
Make sure you ask for a pool facing room as they get sun on the balcony all day whereas the rooms at the back are in shade and only have a view of the hotel next door which is being refurbished and a side view of the sea.
Have you read our reviews which can be accessed via the Hotel Reviews link at the top of the page? You can find additional information in earlier posts in this topic.
