Sorry, it's us Prestos again!
We'd originally booked to go to St Wolfgang for February, but we're getting a bit 'edgy' as we're not sure if its exactly what we're looking for. We want dramatic mountain scenery and the chance to do some winter activities, not just skiing - ie sleigh rides, walking, any other sports etc.
Just to make sure that we've made the right choice re resorts I'm ploughing though all of the brochures to do a bit of 'research'. Have come across a good deal with Thomsons in Trins Austria. It looks spot on for us - high up, LOTS of snow, magic mountain scenery, lots of sports and to top it all free skiing equipment and tuition for the week if you want it!
The hotel and prices look good too
Would be eternally grateful if anyone can give us any feedback re this area .......
Have also been tempted by Mayrhofen and Niederau ............. ahhhhhhhh ... decisions, decisions, decisions!
Many thanks to anyone who can help is out
Trins is a very small resort and even beginners are advised that by the end of the week they'll be wanting to try out the sking at the nearby larger resorts - travel speak for 'so small that you'll be bored with what's on offer by halfway through your holiday' I suspect. If you've never had a mountain winter holiday before I'd think seriously about going to a bigger resort that will have plenty of other things on offer if you get a bit fed up with all that snow. Also, remember that ski fanatics like high resorts because the snow cover will be better but Trins is at an altitude equivalent to Ben Nevis and as such, I doubt that you'll get much in the way of walking done in the surrounding countryside! It will be very cold up there once the sun goes down and you do run a greater risk of storms. At least with somewhere like St Wolfgang or Mayrhofn, if there is a storm on the mountain you'll be able to still get out and about within the town even if the lifts are closed because of the weather - in Trins you'll be on the mountain and unable to go anywhere else to escape!
It sounds to me that Trins is a hamlet on an alm that has only recently been opened up for sking. There is a reason for why Austrians only ever lived up on the alms in the summer and brought family and livestock down for the winter before now - it gets very cold and what is idyllic in the summer can get pretty hellish in the winter!
