Just got back from having jabs. Had to have 3 injections - combined Hep A and B, typhoid and combined tetinus, diptheria and polo. Go back in 1 month and then 6 months for Hep A and B and then covered for 20 years or so. We didn't have to pay anything for them.
when i was younger 17 years ago to be precise i am sure i had to have jabs to go to egypt, and possibly some kind of tablets? is that correct and i have booked to go again to the rehana sharm resort at the very end of aug will i need to have more? any help will be much appreciated thanks
We didn't need any tablets, just the Hep A and B, typhoid and tetinus, diptheria and polo. We went last month.
17 years ago there may well have been worries about malaria, and so tablets to take. Now, the resort areas are malaria-free. There is only an issue in some of the remoter parts of Egypt. So, yes. just the basic jabs are recommended.
Agree with most advice... Rabies isnt really needed but if you do want it you will have to pay. I have been to Egypt a few times and Im going back this year, I asked my GP and he said it would cost me £60!

I am sooooo confused about the injections needed, I got a form from the doctors and it says to fill it in 6 weeks before travel, so how would I get the injection which is done 6 months after the 1st 1
Im not going Egypt till october but I don't want to miss out on the injections needed
Also why does some doctors charge for the injections and some don't, shouldn't it be free on the nhs?
Am I right in thinking that I should ask for;
hep A&B
typhoid
tetinus
diptheria
polio
I'm sure it is Hep A and Typhoid.
Its the Hep a you need a second one for after 6 month to a year. You will be covered for this holiday with the first one but it is well worth having the second one as you are then covered for up to 20 years. So if you go back to countrys like Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey you dont have to think about it again.
At most Drs you have to pay for the price of the prescription if you work, so its no different from getting anything else on the NHS. No idea if you have to pay if you are on the cards though.
Some do it free as its a lot cheaper than treating people on the NHS if they bring things like Typhoid & Tetnus back into the UK and then have to be treated and hospitalised here.

Hep A and typhoid are recommended for most foreign travel, even the USA etc.
For the jabs above many doctors don't charge, it's cheaper than treatment if you don't have them.
All of these are best followed up by boosters for prolonged cover (3 to 10 years depending on the innoculaiton). Otherwise you'll be getting one-off jabs every holiday.
If you need Yellow fever then this is not covered by the NHS and there will be a charge (not usual for Egypt, but for other African destiation it may be, eg Kenya).
Likewise if going to malaria risk areas (not Egyptian holiday resports) you have to buy the tablets.
Get in touch with your local travel clinic and see what you need. We travel to the Red Sea in July and are just asking about boosters (& YF for a trip to Kenya in the autumn).
not typhoid. So we are covered for 20 years for Hep A, but only one year at a time for the typhoid. So wanted to warn people about this!
When we went back after 6 months for the booster for Hep A and typhoid, we were told that the booster was only for Hep A
Not sure why some doctors charge and others dont . We didnt have to pay a penny at our surgery but that may have been because they already had the necessary at the surgery . We only needed to pick a prescription up for youngest son who had a lower dose but obviously being a child we didnt pay for that either
I dont pay a penny for mine, the only one I have to pay for is Yellow Fever whenever I might need it. My typhoid jabs last me 3 years. My doctor is part of the Devon Primary Care Trust, dont know if thats got anything to do with having free jabs.
The nurse at my clinic said they don't charge because they'd rather people had the innoculations than hope you don't contract anything.
Thank you all for the advice
We went to Egypt in 2006 and we all had our injections including the kids. Could someone tell me if we need anymore please as the kids don;t want to go if they have to .
The only possible vaccination that could have run out would be Typhoid at it is only for 3 years, but you dont state what dates/month you had them 3 years ago and when you intend to travel this time.
Angie.
It was beginning of May 2006 and it will be roughly 7th May 2010 when we are thinking of going back?
Sorry about that.
Thanks
Nia x
You and the kids will definately need to have Typhoid done again to be covered.
Thanks for that Angie, mmmmm I see bribery!!!!!
Afraid so, but I am sure you will manage it, otherwise without these vaccinations they wont be going on these wonderful holidays.
Angie.
