I have been reading about the water cuts on cyprus-mail.com. It seems that the water situation is becoming quite serious and that cuts will be taking place in most parts of the island. The tourist areas will probably be OK for the time being, according to the article, but of course people staying outside these areas, in villas or with friends may be affected.
It goes without saying that the residents of Cyprus will suffer more than the tourists, and of course we should all do our bit to conserve water when we are on holiday. Sadly I can't see this news doing much for the tourism industry- if I hadn't already paid for our 2 lots of flights I think I would have changed destination for this year!
According to local (Cyprus) press, cuts were to start yesterday, although the mayor of Paphos said there will be no cuts there.
I certainly don't think that tourists (for I am one too) should worry about these water cuts, even if it is for this reason alone.

Hi this is my 1st post , my partner and I are coming to Paphos in June for our wedding. We will have 30 guests including 11 children aged between 1 and 16. I am a bit concerned after reading about the water shortages with having so many young kids with us . Has this ever happened before and how did it effect the summer months. The kids are all looking forward to the pools in the various complexes they are staying in will these be effected ? Am I right to be concerned ?
We are spending a week in Paphos next week so we will be able to see for ourselves if the hotels/restaurants are affected.
this makes interesting reading
Businesses in Eastern Cyprus at least haven't been affected as yet so hotels, restaurants and bars all have water all the time.
Enjoy your wedding - I'm sure it'll be wonderful and the kids will have a fab time regardless!
At the same time I would like to reiterate other members' suggestion that we should try to conserve water. I would say that this should not apply just to Cyprus, but also to many many other destinations around the world, and certainly in the mediterranean basin (especially the south part) and the middle east. I think it is a pity that people burn fuel in order to desalinate water to water their golf courses and their lawns. It does not make sense to me, and we are all responsible. The local inhabitants and the visitors, not sure who is to blame more, but it doesnot really matter. What matters is that we try to think sustainably for our sake and our childern's sake.
Hope you have a fantastic holiday here.

Got back this week from Protaras. The hotel and tourist trade didn't seem to be affected at all by water shortage. It was mentioned in passing by the rep at the welcome meeting but there were no signs in the bathroom about conserving water. Some hotels were watering grass etc. Speaking to a couple who own a taverna but live in Paralimini, they told us that they were having regular water cuts, when the water spply is switched off for several hours at a time. I hope the hotels push the point so that everyone can do their little bit.
As this situation seems to be changing all the time, does anybody have any idea on the effect it is having on the hotels or have they made alternative arrangements for the supply of water.
I have heard from people living on the island that some hotels have removed plugs from baths, anybody else heard of this ? I like most people would prefer a shower but obviously some prefer a bath.
Anybody any comments on this
Anyway a week on wednesday I will find out for myself and advise the forum straight from the scene.
Regards David
It is he residential areas that get the cuts.
We get water for 36 hours a week now.
Most of the time we don't notice it due to the water in the tank on the roof but now and then we do run out totally.
It's not to bad on our complex though as the swimming pool has a shower room on another tank so we may have to leave our washing for an extra day but at least we don't have to stay sweaty lol.
Also found the answer on todays Paphos news.

David if you are going to Pafos I believe there are no cuts that side of the island.
water cuts every other day, from 7.30am to 7.30am the following morning

They were throwing water around there as if there was no shortage.
It made my blood boil when I saw that with the cuts we have here.
Just enquiring after reading some Cypriot newspapers on line, there is a drought in Cyprus now. Has anyone who has just got back from their hols notice any drought, like not using showers everyday etc or pools not been filled.
cheers louise
there is a water shortages most years, this year is a little more desperate than most, if you are going to a resort hotel/apartment you will probably not notice as cuts have not been applied to tourist areas, if you have rented a private villa/apartment then you will have to suffer what the locals do...
As already said the tourist areas are not affected, but private villas may be. However all properties have a big storage tank on the roof which means that you can shower and flush toilets etc. If the mains is cut off it only affects the use of the washing machine, then when the water comes back on the storage tank will be refilled. It should not run out if you are careful. We are trying to recycle water by using waste water from showers etc. to water the plants.
How long does it normally last? We are due to go in September is it safe to assume all will be well by then? It is a private apt. we are renting hence the reason I ask.
