According to local (Cyprus) press, cuts were to start yesterday, although the mayor of Paphos said there will be no cuts there.

Water problem or no, if we were booked to go we'd go, no messing.

Personally I see nothing to worry about. 12 hours every other day is OK. Don't forget, nearly every single house/apartment in Cyprus has at least a ton and a quarter of water in tanks on the roof. When water is cut off, we can still use that (it lasts us at least two days, I know, long story ;)). Its only the drinking water tap that will be affected directly during the off period.

I certainly don't think that tourists (for I am one too) should worry about these water cuts, even if it is for this reason alone.

Hi this is my 1st post , my partner and I are coming to Paphos in June for our wedding. We will have 30 guests including 11 children aged between 1 and 16. I am a bit concerned after reading about the water shortages with having so many young kids with us . Has this ever happened before and how did it effect the summer months. The kids are all looking forward to the pools in the various complexes they are staying in will these be effected ? Am I right to be concerned ?
Sorry my 1st post is not a cheerier one :hot

The Foreign Office now have a small piece about the water shortage in Cyprus on their website- fco.gov.uk. They are advising that hospitals will not be affected, and that hotels will get water "as needed", whatever that means.
We are spending a week in Paphos next week so we will be able to see for ourselves if the hotels/restaurants are affected.

Businesses in Eastern Cyprus at least haven't been affected as yet so hotels, restaurants and bars all have water all the time.

Shortage of water is not new news in this part of the Med, as I'm sure you know, but it is unusual to be this short so early in the season. So far, the general view seems to be that the hotels will operate normally in terms of their pools, as much of the pool water is simply cleaned and returned, with top-ups for evaporation, etc. I'm sure hotel owners will be asking tourists to go easy on their general water usage, but I can't see that will affect your enjoyment in June. I must confess I drink only bottled water anyway, so lack of tap is no great loss for most of the day!

Enjoy your wedding - I'm sure it'll be wonderful and the kids will have a fab time regardless!

I also believe that prospective visitors should not be overconserned about the water shortage. Yes, it has been there before. I don't see it spoiling anyone's holiday.

At the same time I would like to reiterate other members' suggestion that we should try to conserve water. I would say that this should not apply just to Cyprus, but also to many many other destinations around the world, and certainly in the mediterranean basin (especially the south part) and the middle east. I think it is a pity that people burn fuel in order to desalinate water to water their golf courses and their lawns. It does not make sense to me, and we are all responsible. The local inhabitants and the visitors, not sure who is to blame more, but it doesnot really matter. What matters is that we try to think sustainably for our sake and our childern's sake.

Hope you have a fantastic holiday here.

Got back this week from Protaras. The hotel and tourist trade didn't seem to be affected at all by water shortage. It was mentioned in passing by the rep at the welcome meeting but there were no signs in the bathroom about conserving water. Some hotels were watering grass etc. Speaking to a couple who own a taverna but live in Paralimini, they told us that they were having regular water cuts, when the water spply is switched off for several hours at a time. I hope the hotels push the point so that everyone can do their little bit.

Morning All

As this situation seems to be changing all the time, does anybody have any idea on the effect it is having on the hotels or have they made alternative arrangements for the supply of water.

I have heard from people living on the island that some hotels have removed plugs from baths, anybody else heard of this ? I like most people would prefer a shower but obviously some prefer a bath. :(

Anybody any comments on this

Anyway a week on wednesday I will find out for myself and advise the forum straight from the scene.

The businesses never get cuts.

It is he residential areas that get the cuts.

We get water for 36 hours a week now.

Most of the time we don't notice it due to the water in the tank on the roof but now and then we do run out totally.

It's not to bad on our complex though as the swimming pool has a shower room on another tank so we may have to leave our washing for an extra day but at least we don't have to stay sweaty lol.

David if you are going to Pafos I believe there are no cuts that side of the island.

I was in Peyia for a couple of days and they said they have had no cuts so far.

Has that started since Sunday then Ady or maybe Peyia haven't been cut off yet.

They were throwing water around there as if there was no shortage.

It made my blood boil when I saw that with the cuts we have here.

Hi
Just enquiring after reading some Cypriot newspapers on line, there is a drought in Cyprus now. Has anyone who has just got back from their hols notice any drought, like not using showers everyday etc or pools not been filled.

cheers louise

there is a water shortages most years, this year is a little more desperate than most, if you are going to a resort hotel/apartment you will probably not notice as cuts have not been applied to tourist areas, if you have rented a private villa/apartment then you will have to suffer what the locals do...

please whilst there help to conserve water

As already said the tourist areas are not affected, but private villas may be. However all properties have a big storage tank on the roof which means that you can shower and flush toilets etc. If the mains is cut off it only affects the use of the washing machine, then when the water comes back on the storage tank will be refilled. It should not run out if you are careful. We are trying to recycle water by using waste water from showers etc. to water the plants.

How long does it normally last? We are due to go in September is it safe to assume all will be well by then? It is a private apt. we are renting hence the reason I ask.
