In 1984 we paid £700 each to stay at the Taj for 2 weeks and the following year went on a tour of India with Speedbird also staying in Taj hotels and that cost £1200 each. I think there were about 19 rupees to £1 and a drink cost 2 rupees.
When the charters started we were able to get a return for 2 weeks but just use it a single then buy another ticket to come back with at the end of the season the cheapest we ever did it was £120 return and £50 to come back.
I first went in 1996, and we paid under £350, 2 weeks bed and breakfast in Jan, in hotel Kamat Calangute. Very nice hotel.
In January 1995 we paid £354.00 each for `14nts BB at the Beira Mar ,We are going back to Beira Mar in January 2009 and we are paying £501.00 each(14nts BB),So all things considered, still a very reasonable price. Paula

I don't think that will happen. Things have changed so much in the charter holiday market to the extent that the charter companies will either redirect the flight on way via another UK airport to pick up other passengers so as not to reduce flights OR simply cancel the flight completely as it will not be profitable. I had this conversation with a travel agent friend a few weeks ago who said that the tour companies had to get flights 90% full to break even on flight costs. Some of these flights to Goa last year were not breaking even, that's why there are fewer this year... and fuel has gone up.
Where they make the money is on the accomodation. It would shock you if you knew how little Goan resorts/hotels are getting out of the deal.
Now you and me can book with Jet etc and do our own deals with these people - some still give good value and some are very greedy.
Jet Airways is the best to come down to Goa via Mumbai as they will get you from Heathrow and straight down to Goa without any hassles and you can pick your own accommodation.
This year we have paid £500 odd each in flights for 3 weeks and additional £200 or so for a private apartment. We no doubt could have got flights etc for less, but still seems like not a bad deal to me. Hurrah cant wait
Still happy with what we have paid though.
next year we paid £620 for the nizmar ..next yr £608 odd sum for the same hotel ....
next yr £610 ..in P/park .....next £553 for 3 weeks that time ..march this year £279 for 2 weeks ..and for this november we got that for £614 for 3 weeks .
I have read of people paying much the same for their flights and then have to pay for a hotel ..I have always been happy to pay in and around £600 mark .................colleen
