Hi Pippa ... you will find some advice on this issue in the Safe & Sound booklet (link in navigation bar at top of page).

It's best to contact your insurance as quickly as possible, although I can understand in this case you weren't aware of the severity of your injury. Aside from anything else your insurance company will be able to advise you on the best thing to do in circumstances where you don't have a rep to assist you - it's in their interests as well as yours as they will be paying for treatment and for any other things that arise as a result (like repatriation and in the case of an illness which leaves you hospitalised after your due return date, accommodation for your spouse).

There's little chance of something similar happening again, but for future it's best to ring the insurers straight away, after all if they say it's not necessary to contact them it was only a cost of a phone call, but they would have been able to tell you where to go, how to get there etc. (plus you would get refunds on taxis etc.).

Oh and consultants won't contact your insurance company - they are asking that because they need to know that your treatment will be paid for.

Thank you. I think probably with hindsight that is what we should have done. Although I'm not sure how much help the insurance company would have been. Despite being a well known and 'reputable' company they were not the most helpful - they had a wonderful habit of calling the hotel and leaving a message for us to call them even though we were in our room most of the time and could have got straight through. Then when we tried to claim for the calls (we had proof of these) they refused to pay up! Then despite our insistance that on arrival back at Gatwick we we would prefer to use our own car to get home they insisted on sending a car to meet us - an mpv which because I was in plaster I was unable to get into!!

Needless to say we no longer use that company.

At least should anything similar happen again we may be better prepared although as you can imagine in those circumstances you don't always think logically.

It hasn't put us off going diy I hasten to add - especially after reading some reports where the reps were not very helpful anyway.

I think they are much of a muchness but if things were to go badly wrong you would be assigned someone with loads of experience. Sometimes like you've found, what they organise for you can fall short of the mark to what you actually need but as they are paying for it they choose it (cars or accommodation or whatever).
