To help protect little ones from the sun buy t-shirts a good few sizes too big and stitch up the neck opening a little each side until they don't slip over their shoulders.
They are loose and airy, come right down past their knees and the sleeves nearly down to their wrists.
You do still need sun lotion as its possible to burn through clothing but the extra layer of protection is great, it also helps if it gets a little chilly.
It helps to spot your children on the beach if you buy swimwear in very bright colours. I used to do this with my five boys and was reminded yesterday when we took our grandson to the beach and nearly all the boys were wearing navy blue trunks, it makes it so hard to distinguish one child from another.
When you make your base camp on the beach try to find somewhere near a focal point to make it easier for the child to locate you should they wander off.
Lush do a hard shampoo bar for hard water, but I've found the karma komba bar just fine in the dominican republic
The Lush soaps for hair washing sound a good idea, but are they the shops that you can smell half way down the road, and when I go in my eyes run and I always cough and splutter and have to leave quick. I would buy stuff if I could cope with the smell.

Or there are sellers on ebay who also do shampoo bars (not necessarily lush but smell a bit milder) can't guarentee the effectiveness or quality though!
The Lush shops are really strong (I love it though) but there's a website Or there are sellers on ebay who also do shampoo bars (not necessarily lush but smell a bit milder) can't guarentee the effectiveness or quality though!
I cant think of many which you havent already posted except when my children were little i used to take boxes of ice pops and freeze once there.
Does anyone know if you can get something to plug in which keeps bugs away ? ( i have a phobia of cockroaches etc and am sure i recall seeing something which keeps bugs away with a working radious of aprox 25m )
Take a an element for warming up water in your hotel rooms, if you havent got a kettle, and much cheaper than buying one..
I know this is a bit sad but i always take loads of supermarket carrier bags(when you could get them without feeling guilty) and on the last night or next morning sort all our clothes into separate washing loads and put them in the bags and tie them up writing on them what is in each bag and how important it is, undies VERY, bikinis NOT SO MUCH and then when i get home i can have a load of washing on before my OH has paid the taxi, it saves so much time and you can avoid the laundry mountain that seems to never get smaller. This year i had done all our washing in couple of days, the ironing's another story though!
Kazza36, I remember my Grandmother using one of those elements for making her cups of tea when on holiday. Be very careful with them though as one year I recall me and my Mom going to my Nan's room only to see smoke bellowing out of it, when we walked in she'd used the element in the bathroom and forgot to unplug it. It had been left resting on a towel which had caught alight, my mom in a panic picked the towel up and tried to throw it out onto the balcony, but missed the gap in the doors and it ended up catching the curtains I can't remember how but she managed to put it out, the towel was quickly disposed of and the curtains were a bit scorched. We worried for the rest of the holiday that we'd be found out but we never were, I laugh about it now, think you're better off with a travel kettle though!
I'd forgotten all about those! My parents had one when we went to Spain in the 1970s - I didn't know you could still get them! Travel kettles aren't all that expensive and you can even get a normal full size Tesco Value/Asda Smartprice kettle for a few quid nowadays - cheap enough to leave behind, or pass on to someone else on your last daynicJW wrote:I remember my Grandmother using one of those elements for making her cups of tea when on holiday.
I do that too! I take a few black bin liners and sort it all into darks, whites, colours, swimwear etc... So much easier when you get home! When we came back from Fuerteventura at Easter, we arrived home at about 2am, I put a load straight in the washer and went to bed. My washer has a delay timer on it so I set it to start a few hours later, so it was all washed and ready to peg on the line when I woke up in the morning, and then another load went straight in.Cypruschick wrote:I always take loads of supermarket carrier bags ...... and on the last night or next morning sort all our clothes into separate washing loads and put them in the bags
Always. always keep medication, jewellery, camera and things like contact lenses in hand luggage.
After having to pay overweight suitcase charges, we realised that it was the toiletries, shampoo showergels and suncream that added quite a bit - so last time we flew we bought all of our holiday toiletries after checking in and going through Security. Boots the Chemist at the airport sold items for exactly the same price as the one near us, and we just brought them on in our hand baggage.
OMG Fiona...I remember that Goan holiday of your's when your case didn't turn up! NOT that you let it spoil your holiday for you but knowing the swimming costumes that are on sale in Goa ..what did you do from that aspect?
If you are taking your own beach towels on holiday, stitch a length (slightly narrower than the width of the towel) of 1" elastic across one end and attach another to the other end with velcro.By doing this you can loop one end over your lounger and then attach the other end further down.It saves your beach towel getting blown off if it's windy or at least that's what the bloke that's now lying on your lounger told you!

Back on topic I found a really useful gadget in the Asda catalogue and also available at Asda on line. Its a sunshade that fits over the end of a sunlounger and is attached to a cushion that lies on the sunlounger, its completely portable and fits in a suitcase. They are priced at £13 and I was wondering if anyone had one and if it was as useful as it looked
I found this forum the other day and thought this gadget was perfect for me,
I dont mind sitting in the sun but i cant stand the sun on my head and dont particuarly like wearing hats, i haven't seen this sunshade before and didnt know there was anything like this on the market.
I looked on the asda web site and it was in stock but was £13 + postage which was either £4.550 or £4.95 which works out expencive.
I have now got one on ebay £11.99 free postage item no 160339451717 and i love it and is in my case ready for hols to Dom Rep in 11 days time.
Thanks for sharing

Thought i'd try to resurrect this topic..... We always pack a pop up sun tent for our two year old. Ours cost £20ish from mothercare, and folds into it's own little bag. Great for a bit of shade for him to play in. Also a portable dvd player with a few of his favourite cartoons has proved a godsend for us on the flight/transfer!
Also - at several outdoor and camping shops you can buy Permethrin spray to treat your clothes to repel mozzies and some other biting insects. I found one bottle lasted for a pair of jeans, 2 pairs of trousers, a few pairs of socks, a dress and a few tops.
And on a slightly less serious note, those travel washing lines double up as excellent skipping ropes for small kids!
and don't forget in the holiday tools section the

And also, those skipping ropes make fine washing lines!!!
On our recent trip to Chicago we needed more luggae to come back home (It's a long story) so a friend directed us to the 'Unique Thrift store' where we purchased a very nice small wheeled case for $7 (about £4.50). We got a decent case and charity benefitted as well. win win In fact mrs Hi De H was even more pleased because when she got the case back to the hotel she found several pens pencils and erasers in there as a bonus!
