I'd forgotten all about this thread until earlier on today when browsing the forum!
Thought I'd bump it up to see if anyone has any new tips... my latest one is to take solid shampoo bars (available at lush and sellers on ebay) instead of taking bulky bottles, they work on all hair types (I have very thick long curly hair and usually go through 3 bottles of shampoo a week) 1 bar lasts me 2 weeks!
Also, Citronella essential oil is my latest find for bug repellant... they also do citronella incense sticks which would keep the bugs out of your room! Non toxic and doesn't smell too bad either.
18 weeks left 'til we go to Cuba... didn't think we'd be getting away this year, but couldn't resist
Thank you Dramaqueen for the idea about the shampoo. I too go through a heck of a lot of shampoo on holiday and being the girl I am the one who gets stuck with carrying all the bottles of shampoo/conditioner/sun screen etc in my suitcase while the other half's suitcase is as light as a feather.
Another think I do is to scan my passports into the computer and send them to my email address and then if there were any problem as long as I have computer access (which most resorts have nowadays) then I can get a hold of my details.
This is a fab thread and so useful
I love the idea about shampoo and conditioner bars. I use shampoos especially for coloured hair though and Lush don't seem to do anything similar.
if your shoes are rubbing the back of your heels, try rubbing a candle on it the wax softens it,hope this helps someone, enjoy your holidays..........
New trainers? Or men - new shoes?
that's what our financial adviser told us.....
same with colour scans of banknotes
you have to put a "watermark" on saying "copy" (How do you do that, then?????)
can anybody confirm this about passports please?
I'm sure lots of us do it with no criminal intentions - (scan passports I mean, not banknotes )
yes probably that would help if you wear trainers, but would,nt it be to hot two pairs of socks?. And it was either mens or womens .shoes.
well I tried it with womens and mens shoes and it didn't matter, with the womens i looked a **** with one pair of socks or two pairs!!!
Well it is defintely illegal to make colour photocopies of passports, so I imagine scanning them is the same thing really. (Husband is a solicitor and he is emphatic about the photocopy issue!)
I always have a look around the charity shops before I go for new books, I read a ridiculous amount on holiday! I picked up 6 books @ 10p each last year. Read them all and left them at the hotel for the other guests. That way I have space in my suitcase for goodies on the way home!
The books idea is very good Stace, however, the charity shops around where I live don't sell books (including the ones that have badly creased spines) for that much less than the Tesco up the road from us, but it is still cheaper and therefore I also don't mind leaving them behind at the hotel.
If you have a Poundland, look there for books. Just discovered ours has them and some well known Authors/Titles as well. At £1 it's cheaper than a magazine!!
Someone recommended Compeed blister plasters to me recently when I had a problem with my new walking shoes. What a revelation. I don't know how they work but they are blooming brilliant.
If your teenage daughters are going away to a hotel, buy some of those rubber wedge shaped doorstops that they can wedge inside the door when they go to bed for extra security even if they lock the door from the inside. Can't be too careful.
Apparently, re scanning passports...if you scan them in colour it's illegal

It is illegal to copy a British Passport, copy means, scanning, photocopying, filming and reproduction in any other medium, including the placing of material on the Internet.
Photocopies of the personal details page of the Passport may be made, for the purposes of record keeping only, by the passport owner, notaries, solicitors, government departments and banks.
Certain sections like the front cover can be reproduced for such things as "works of art," but the pages with personal information can only be reproduced for "record purposes only" and the photostat must be in black and white and have a fictious photograph.
As far as I know, that still stands CLICK HERE

I didn't know this was illegal until mentioned now. Whenever we have bought something on holiday in Goa (jewellery mainly) we have always been asked for a copy of our passport. Something to do with money laundering and the seller having to prove that the person buying their jewellery was a customer.
DEMANDED copies of all staff passports,
they said, to ensure all staff were eligible to be working within the UK.
As you can imagine, there was a lot of trouble over this, but eventually - most due to extensive
pressure, and allsorts of government jargon being quoted at them, all staff - under duress and
against their better judgement - allowed copies of the passports to be taken.
Reading the entries posted previously ^^^^ am I now right in thinking that what his firm did was actually illegal?
My husband's firm was bought out and the new employers they said, to ensure all staff were eligible to be working within the UK.

Wow I only email my passport to myself so that I have my own details in case they get lost, I get lost or they are destroyed by a tsunami, forest fire or earthquake, I'm not planning on reproducing the details and using them illegally, it just for emergency use so that I can prove who I am if need be.
Photocopies of the personal details page of the Passport may be made, for the purposes of record keeping only, by the passport owner, notaries, solicitors, government departments and banks.
I think the above quote covers what I intend to do with my passport details, certailnly nothing illegally, anyway if I was to do something illegal with a passport I would hardly use my own - the photo is terrible
Back on topic I found a really useful gadget in the Asda catalogue and also available at Asda on line. Its a sunshade that fits over the end of a sunlounger and is attached to a cushion that lies on the sunlounger, its completely portable and fits in a suitcase. They are priced at £13 and I was wondering if anyone had one and if it was as useful as it looked
