Hi,
I have just returned from a week in Playa and was surprised to see how quiet the resort was. I tend to go out in Jan for some family winter sun, but got a late deal for last week and a baby sitter (mother-in-law) for a childless week of fun.
It's been a few years since I've been in September and I was really surprised to see how quiet it was. It's been a few years since I was 18 so I tend not venture around veronicas, but even that seemed very quiet.
Has anyone noticed this? Are the timeshare touts stopping people coming here on holiday? Or are the flights expensive compared to Costa del Sol / Blanca
I would hate for this to be the trend as I've had lots of happy memories here and I would hate for it to go the way of some of the Costa Brava resorts in Spain which are now ghost towns. Surely this must be taking its toll on the bars /restaurants as it seems to be a bar for every 5 people on holiday
Hi Stephen, I think the Canaries are pricing themselves out of the holiday market, especially Tenerife.I dont think it's the flights, as you will pay more as it's a longer flight ,I think it's the hotel prices. To book a room for 2 weeks in a 4star hotel, like the Vulcano half board ,with a pool view can cost as much as £1400 / £1500 for 2 people...this is without flights and direct with the hotel. With flights the cheapest I could find was £1800 with Portland ...this is from the Northeast for the beginning of April. We can go to the costas for a lot less in 4star hotels .
Why not try a private apartment rental instead of an hotel.
I've just come back from a week in the costa del sol and i spent nowhere near what i would have spent for a week in tenerife.
One night at a bar i had 1 pt larger and 3 vodka tonics (proper smirnoff) and it cost me 9 euros.
I can't get that for a night out in tenerife.
As with most tourist areas the prices are higher. Since moving here we have found some fantastic Cuban bars/clubs, drink are cheaper and the atmoshphere better
The strange thing is my friends just back from Gran Canaria (Puerto Rico) and says it was dead.
he's been there about 30 times so knows if its busy or quiet.
I was doing searches for holidays in Tenerife for this month, only to find huge price tags, so i tried Gran Canaria, got the same huge prices.
SO, if its that quiet how are the prices so big
I've seen on another forum , where members have said las americas etc has been "dead" this summer. But they are simply basing it on the amount of people around veronicas etc aswell.
I'm with Chris on this one. This has been done before on another thread, so I'm not going to go over old ground except to say when the price of 2 drinks costs the same as a bottle of spirits there is something far wrong. I take Jackie's point about tourist areas but as Chris says she is just back from the Costa del Sol, which is a tourist area, and look at the prices there. Between this and the high hotel prices, Tenerife needs to get it's act together before it's too late.
Another point I would like to make on this is the fact that those of you who are regular visitors will have seen a lot of changes to areas in Tenerife with regard to pedestrianising etc. and also the addition of many more up-market venues such as El Faro, Vibes Bar, Magic Bar to name but a few. The whole image of Tenerife is changing slowly, and yes, although these places are more expensive than your average karaoke bars they are attracting a different kind of clientel, those with more money. The days of Tenerife being portrayed on TV shows such as 'Tenerife Uncovered' where they show nothing but Veronicas and 18 - 30 holidays are disappearing and it is slowly reverting back to the place it was many years ago. To be honest if it gets rid of the football shirt brigade and the younger visitors who want to go on a bender for 2 weeks then I personally don't have a problem with the price increases. So all in all Chico I would have to say Tenerife IS getting it's act together and becoming a more desirable destination.
Thats why I now do it myself...........booked Jet2 flights for 2nd Novermber as soon as they came out. Cost £365 for FOUR of us return from Belfast.
Booked private apartment in a nice area of Peurto Colom (spelling!) costing £200 per week.
Total of £565 per week for the half term break for four people is pretty reasonable in my view!
Get in early and you will get good flights.
Hi Jackie
To be honest I have noticed the drink prices have gone up, but that can't be the only reason the resort is getting quiet. I have also noticed the resort is getting bigger - I like my holidays and I have been to Tenerife at least once a year for the last 7 years. A bigger resort should result in more people if the hotels were full, so the numbers on the street should be more and not less. It did feel like it was quieter than January this year, I'm not saying that is a bad thing, but less people usually results in places closing down and an in increase in prices (restaurants/pubs need to cover their overheads).
If I wanted to go somewhere quiet than I have hundreds of resorts to choose from, the reason I like Tenerife is that it has lots of choices where to go, cheap bar, upmarket bar, quiet bar, cabaret bar etc, plus endless excursions.
I did see 2 or 3 places that were empty in supposedly high season.
By the way Jackie I ventured into the upmarket places you mentioned and they were also dead quiet. I'm not sure what you mean by 'football shirt brigade' as if anyone wearing a football shirt is some type of thug, but the bars that show football know it is a big money earner for them, which can subsidise the bingo for the oldies in the night.
I'm no longer in the 18-30 age range, but I didn't see many of them out in Tenerife as well. I had a chat to a group of teenagers while watching the 'Football' on the Tuesday night and they told me all the young kids are going to the Greek islands as it is cheaper to get there and the price of food and drink is much cheaper as well. The only reason they came to Tenerife was they were staying in one of their dads Timeshare.
The resort is big and for a big resort to survive it needs visitors. If the visitors are no longer coming then Tenerife will struggle, especially with all the new resorts in Eastern Europe opening their doors to the British pound
having just returned after 3 weeks I must say we have never seen it quite so empty
People are being made redundant property sales are vitually non existant
not looking good
Actually, I prefer it a bit quieter, which is why we go outside the school holiday times, but I guess this is not good for the economy.
One thing that did strike me though were the number of English kids who were there rather than being at school...........
it certainly is quieter...... even than last year, and i thought that was the worst ever!
Yes, have to agree with you about all the work that has been done and is ongoing, it can only benefit the island. It could and maybe should have been done sooner though. With regard to the more up-market venues you mentioned, I don't quite follow your meaning. By attracting clientel with more money, do you mean Tenerife should'nt attract holidaymakers on a budget? Surely for Tenerife to survive there has to be a balance of all standard of accommodation and all priced accordingly. With the posts on this thread and others and also on other forums, people are not coming because the prices are too high. As for the drink prices, I agree for some places with good entertainment you pay a bit extra and I don't mind that at all. But some of the prices I mentioned before WERE for your average karaoke bars .
To be honest if it gets rid of the football shirt brigade and the younger visitors who want to go on a bender for 2 weeks then I personally don't have a problem with the price increases.
Right i'm 41 i love my rugby and wear my shirt with pride, if i'm away and a rugby match is on i go to the railway and watch it. And i would love to go on a bender for 2 weeks, but can't afford it in las americas.
If you do try and discourage this type of tourism then you will have nothing. I love the soul suite and rave about it. But i would never visit Jazzimo, i did once and got stung for the price of 15 euros for 2 drinks, never again. I can't afford that.
You now have to compete with the carribbean and Bulgaria, you only have to watch Benidorm uncovered now to see this.
Right i have just come back from a week in Benalmadena (costa del sol)
and i couldn't believe how cheap drinks were. I was paying 3 euros for a proper vodka (smirnoff) and tonic Britvic (prefer schweeps) but who can be fussy.
I love Tenerife and nothing will change that.
But i've said it before, i now spend a few nights in on my balcony, with a euro bottle of lira wine playing cards with my friends.
I don't want to do this, but i can't afford to go out in las americas every night.
No matter how much the 'council' have spent on the roadworks.
It is now much cheaper to go to the carribbean for 2 weeks all inclusive than do 2 weeks in Tenerife.
I've been going to Tenerife for years so i've seen all the tourist spots, la gomera, tiede etc. So now i just go for 2 weeks of relaxation.
My holiday costs us £600+ for 2 weeks self catering. Then we spend over £1000 for drinks and food.
I can book 2 weeks in mexico all inclusive for £499 each. Total £998
Now this is a massive saving.
So why should people go to Tenerife, when they can go farther a field for cheaper.
Benidorm has seemed to have cut its cloth, but Tenerife never seems to have.
And hairy are the ice cubes still bigger than the glass...........
We like Tenerife so that where we go!
I have said how quiet it was in July in a previous post, some of the Bar owners apparently blame it on the rise in All Inclusive Hotels which effectively stops you spending in the resort!
we went to altrincham last night for a bit of shopping, on the way, through there is a shop selling houses and holdiay flats in bulgaria,
The shop is selling new houses for £6000
whats that in TCI two decent time shares?
there's your problem.
I dont believe eating out is getting too expensive when you are actually there.
After all, you dont go on holiday to watch the pennies you go to have a good time.
it is my belief that its just been caught napping by the slicker marketing of other resorts, infact, i expect if you looked carefully you could go to florida for what you would pay for tenerife.
we went to pontins in prestatyn over the august bank holiday, it was scruffy, i ve never seen so many people without a tooth in their head!
but the surounding area was nice and clean. holiday cost for four £60.00
it looked really pleasant on the tv the other night.

two weeks AI in greece 5 star £345.00
therein lies you problem.
the whole resort was quiet, not just shops and hotels, the businesses are as well.
the trouble is pepole in here wont accept its had its day, because they live there or have a timeshare there, blinkers are welded on.
i was told back in june it was quiet, we went to play las visas beach and could have had one of hundreds onf sunbeds.
As I recall, you never got slated for saying the place was quiet. You got slated for saying the place was a dump. Different thread mate, different subject .
