Just returned to Newcastle from Fuerteventura having had the misfortune of using Excel for our flights.
For our flight from Newcastle on 26/07/06 they used a rather ancient MD83 operated by some airline called Blue Line. There was no in flight entertainment as promised by Excel, nothing at all to keep the kids entertained as promised by Excel, and no bar service. The cabin crew handed meals out early in the flight, and a soft drink towards the end of the flight, and that was it. Must have read my paper about ten times.
We had paid to pre-book seats together as we were travelling with an eight year old, and at check-in were allocated seats 2a, 2b, and 2c. There were no seat number 2b on the plane. It was a 2-3 configeration and the seats were numbered a,c -d,e,f. Therefore anyone with a seat number b didn't actually have a seat, resulting in a 'just sit anywhere you can' policy, a bit like Easyjet (although my experiences with Easyjet have been good).
With hindsight I should have been grateful that at least the flight was more or less on time.
On our return from Fuerteventura on 09/08/06 we checked in for our flight which was due to depart at 15.10, arriving in Newcastle at 19.30 on 09/08/06. At check-in we were informed that there was a delay (technical problems) and that were were to be bussed to a nearby hotel at 15.00 for a meal at 17.00. We were then informed at 18.30 that we were to be bussed back to the airport at 20.00 for our flight back to Newcastle at 22.30. The had sub-chartered another aircraft from another company in the UK and were in the process of flying it to Fuerteventura to return us to Newcastle.
On arriving at Fuerteventura airport, we were informed of another delay and would be departing at 23.30, and we were to be given vouchers to spend on refreshments.
Whilst waiting for the flight, word spread that we were going to be flown to Glasgow, and not Newcastle.
We eventually started boarding the aircraft at around 23.30, and some passengers asked before we boarded the plane if the rumour was true and we were to be taken to Glasgow. This was denied and the passengers were told the plane was going to Newcastle.
Anyway, once in our seats and doors locked, on a Flyglobespan 737, the pilot apologised on behalf of Excel for our delay, but that he had one further bit of bad news. Due to the flying time that the crew had left, we were to be flown to Glasgow, and then bussed to Newcastle. It threatened to turn nasty on the plane, but in truth it wasn't Flyglobespan's fault but Excel's. Again no in flight entertainment, but who cared by then. Shortly before landing we were given a letter on Excel paper explaining reason for delay, and reason for being taken to Glasgow.
Arrived at Glasgow 04.20 and put on busses to Newcastle. Arrived at Newcastle airport at 08.30 on 10/08/06, a full 13 hours behind schedule.
Well that was my experience with Excel, and one which I certainly would not give them the opportunity to repeat.
I originally booked with Excel because of the good flight times, and for the service they promise on their website. The flights certainly were not cheap.
If you haven't flown with Excel before, I would urge you not to, it's not worth taken the chance. If you have, and they have lived up to expectations then I suppose there would be no reason not to use them in future.
I am sorry if I have gone on a bit, I am off to bed now to try and catch up on some much needed sleep.
