I can really sympathise with you getting jittery everytime you hear a rumble, only a couple of weeks I got the fright of my life when we(my daughter and I) heard a loud roaring sound which sounded the same as the earthquake we experienced in zante, we think it must have been a plane crashing through the sound barrier, i was in tears as the memories came flooding back, but as Im expecting, like I was in october its probably my hormones
My daughter whos 14 loved zante and cant wait to go back, so the earthquake certainly hasn't put her off!

I agree with both of your comments, I feel that any vibration starts the fear mode again for me.

However, on a more positive note, it is most definatly lesson learned for me and my family. I have read up on so much data and collated information surrounding Tsunami and earthquakes that we would be more prepared should such a disaster occur again.

We are going to the Domincan next Jan and it states that they are well over due for Tsunami and earthquake. But, no one could predict when one will come other than a Tsunami so, we have to get on with our lives and enjoy it immensley while we are here

my friend and i were in zante, during the oct earthquake... we were actually at the airport waiting to come home, thats when it started, the loud rumbling noise, we all thought a plane was about to come through the departure lounge, but of course it was the quake, the walls started to sway, and bits of plaster fell from the ceilings, but what we found more alarming, was when all the airport staff took off, we were just standing there with our luggage, watching every1 running around.... sorry, might just be my sick sense of humour, but i found it rather funny!

When the aftershocks took place, all hotel staff would run out of the hotel, not one person shouted get out or wave frantically so people would follow. It is alarming, when the greek people run out, and end up on their knees praying.

Folks on Zakynthos are havign a bumpy time right now. There have been six powerful tremors there in the last 48 hours measuring up to 5.9 on the richter scale

Thanks Billbar, but it has brought it all back to me, oh god the legs are shaking and heart is pounding just reading your link. I feel for the people who reside there, I can remember how desperately I wanted to get off the island and soon as possible, please let everyone be ok, I know that it states there are no injuries or damage, which is wonderful, however it is the fear of the unknown that spooks you out, waiting for the next one and asking yourself will this be the 'big one'.
Thanks for the link, funny how they say these quakes have probably released all the energy from the fault....... what We are only six months away from the last big one.
When we were there in october, one of the hotelier spoke to us about earthquakes. She stated that in the 8 years of her residing there, she had never witnessed one like that before. Further, she stated that the Greek people are aware of tremors, this is when the floor seems to sway from side to side. However, whilst we were then and experienced a 6.5 on the richter scale and 10 other quakes thereafter in a matter of 5 days. Well that initial quake, the earth literally moved to the extent that the tiles on the floor appeared to be moving up and down, with a huge sound (like a train coming through).
I certainly do not wish to scare anybody, but there is a huge difference between a tremor and a quake, and the hotelier felt that she did not know whether or not she wished to reside there after feeling that quake on the 18/10/05.
I feel for everyone there at the moment and pray that things will calm down for Greek people and holidaymakers alike.

I was in Athens in Sept '99, sitting outside a taverna having coffee. The day was 'heavy', a strange atmosphere and humid.

We began to notice dogs barking. Not just one, but it sounded like a good few and the barking was coming from all around us although we couldn't see any of the damn dogs. We began to comment on this when an older man who worked in the taverna came rushing out and physically pushed us away from our table out onto the pavement. Not just us but two other couples who were also sitting outside. Next thing, all hell broke loose and the pavement and road seemed to be moving just as Kazee has described and I'll never forget the noise. Apart from folks closeby shouting and screaming there was this low deep rumble that seemed to go on for ages.

Both of us fell backwards and landed on our backsides. It seemed a lot safer to be there than trying to stand up

We have no doubt the older man knew what was about to happen and got us out from under the awning which had tumbled down. Those inside the taverna were ok, although there was a lot of damage to its walls and ceiling.

It was my one and only experience of an earthquake and I hope it never happens again. Weirdly though it has left me with an interest in them, particulalrly those in Greece.

Earthquakes.......frightening stuff at the minute. Like you Billbar very weirdly I have become very interested in earthquakes and Tsunamis. Only yesterday I read the Kathimerini newspaper (Greece international english language paper) that the Greek people who study about earthquakes are concerned in case there may be a 'seismic swarm'.
What I read was that there were quakes on the 3rd and 5th April and then obviously the ones on the 11th and 12th and they all appear to be coming from the same epicentre.

I also read in our daily paper (I know we do not believe everything that is printed) however, it stated that holiday makers were warned away from parts of Greece afther the earthquake scare. When you think about it Zante had a huge quake in October, also on the 8th January at Crete and Kythira and again at Zante.... it is a very worrying time.

Further it stated that there was no injuries or damage reported but schools were now shut and dozens of people moved out of their homes to sleep in parks and cars.

Glad I am not there now

I feel for everyone there and hope things do calm down and it is not the start of a 'seismic swarm'.

Oh my god .....
just read the last few posts here and feel really sick we go 30th July to laganas and have recieved a letter altering our flights and we have to sign it and return to travel agents at this procise moment dont know what to do as we havn`t been given the option to cancel and reading the posts have put me off going not been sleeping last couple of days as the quakes and tremours are on my mind all the time hubby not worried at all been to zante twice before but never experienced anything at all

Could anybody tell me if there are things like this happen on any of the other greek islands such as Corfu, Kos, Crete etc as may see if i can change our destination fingers crossed.

Other resorts are Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada and Zante. I have previously read on another thread that due to earthquakes stay off the North West side of Greece, they are all on the faultline.

I have only just joined this chat line , and have been reading the threads about earthquakes in Zante . I really feel that malcb should get a grip on things , I was also in zante on 18/10/05 when we had a quake I was in a store in Alykes It felt very strange to feel things moving but absolutley nobody shouted or screamed or feared for their lives what nonsense ! , the greece people have lived with this all their lives so took no notice at all , and the holiday makers , were to busy enjoying them selves to notice what was happening untill it had happened , I am not surprised to here that the lady is stressed and lost a lot of weight but I don`t think compension is payable in this case ! As you are obviously a very nervy pair I suggest you stick to your back garden for your hoildays and then you won`t have any undue stress !
Zante is a beautiful place with wonderful people that relies heavily on tourist for their living , It is a well known fact it lies on a fault along with Turkey and Italy , earthquakes are a way of life for these people so leave them be , you did it you didn`t like it so don`t do it again

Fair comment..................................Like previously stated I have read up so much on earthquakes it is unbelievable where and how many people have to be subject to these acts of god on a daily basis.

It would also be fair to say that it is therefore, difficult to choose any resort, place or country as we all get tremors, even in the uk. So you may not be safe in the back garden

On a serious note, I certainly would not like to be party to that experience again, due to your comment though Julie A would you and was this your first time

Hi Kazee, thanks for the reply and I have been on the phone to our travel op she as told me to look in the brochure and she will see if she can get us transfered somewhere else just hoping they can if not i feel so strong about not going to zante ( if i`m panicky now what the hell will I be like if we get there god only knows) pretty upsetting really as we`ve been before and loved it and never had any tremours or felt anything not to my knowing anyway, just so upset that i have let myself get so worried and down suppose having your only child go with you may have something to do with it i don`t know but if it comes to it will cancel all together thats how down and distressed i`ve got about it,better go and try a chill pill

Like I said previously though earthquakes, tremors are felt anywhere. I do understand how you feel, I had our son with us and the other 2 back in the uk as they are adults and no longer reside with us. It was the fear of the unknown, and awaiting more tremors.
Just make sure that you are doing the right thing, they may have calmed down now who knows.
If it is any consilation though, we are going the DR next Jan and they had a quake in 2003. Sorry to reiterate, but it does show that loads of countries have tremors....

experienced earthquakes in Kefalonia a few years ago. We were looking in a shop window in Skala, heard this rumbling, the shopkeeper came running out into the street, we just wobbled a little, then another one as we were walking into a bar knocked us off our feet a little again. The barman just said ' oh you have been dancing then have you' thought this quite funny how he described the earthquakes, they get so many.

kazzee It was my first earthquake in Zante but I have been a few times before I have experienced about 20 earthquakes there but like I said its nothing the time to worry is when they don`t have earthquakes ! I have very good greek friends on Zante and of course no one likes earthquakes but its their way of life the greek people have a healthy respect for them after the devastation of 53 I will be back in zante in June and noway would I change my opion about going I cant wait to see my friends and enjoy the greek way of life

Regarding the quakes in Zante I would like to say that it's not something unusual for the island.It's one of the most quake prone regions in Greece (quakes occur every 3-4 years) and therefore locals are used to it.All the houses on the island are built according to strict anti-quake standards and that's why no serious damages were reported during those last quakes.Probably there are going to be a couple of minor aftershocks during the summer but if you have planned your vacation there, it's not a reason to cancel it.Actually I would recommend someone to go there as this 'bumpy' start to the holiday season means that you will get better prices on almost anything.Hope you enjoy your vacation in Zante.
