Resort : Villa Dorada is a collection of hotels refered to by the locals as expensive jails. This is because we are advise not to travell out side of the resorts on our own. Around the outside of all the hotels is a fence that is patrolled by armed uniformed security. inside the resort there are plain clothes officers so you are safe to walk around the resort but due to the level of poverty in the country are advised to only venture out if you are on a registered trip.

There really is no need to leave the hotel unless you are doing an excursion. The monster truck was quike good & the dolphins were fantastic. These were the only two times that we left the hotel cpmplex, because with 3 hotels, bars, daytime entertainment, lots of pools & a great atmosphere we didnt want to go anywhere else. Plus you will never have a problem trying to find a sun lounger without a towel on it. Everything was just about perfect & we are definately going back. You will not be disappointed.

The 3 hotels are the resort and to be honest it was very boaring. Basicly it was a complex holiday with plenty of beach and pools and games.

The views around of the mountains were amazing,was really nice laying on the beach, palm trees around everywhere and the view of the sea and mountains were was really nice, There is a walk way the lenght of the beach, which is really nice, you pass the Merengue and Bacchata hotels, which you are also allowed to use, the Bacchata you must try, was our favorite. All the best with your hols, if you have as good time as us, you will come back well happy.

The surrounding areas and the plazza were clean and litter free, there were a few bars and eating places around the resort. The beach was ok and free of litter but it didn't have a caribbean feel to it at all, it was just like being in spain but it took nine hours to get there.

We went to Bavaro, which is the East of the island and sits on the Caribbean sea, last February. The beach was just like a postcard. This was paradise. I would not go back to the North as we all much preferred the East. Apparantly, Bavaro has one of the world's top 10 beaches. Long stretches of white, soft sand with aqua, clear water. The beach at the Riu Mambo needs to be kept much tidier.

The hotel is in a remote spot outside of Puerto Plata although taxi's are available at hotel to take you in. There was so much going on at hotel that we did not feel the need to visit resort.
The hotel is on a beautiful clean stretch of beach (shared with two sister hotels) with plenty of sunbeds no matter what time of day you go.

We stayed in the blue bay getaway villas, the standard of cleanliness in the resort was excellent, the entertainment was appalling-Salsa band & a water ballet, not everyone's idea of riveting entertainment and to top it off, the bars close at 10.30pm, except the beach bar,which is supposedly 24hrs per day, however who wants to utilise a place where the staff are rude and unhelpful?. The complex is only a minute away from the beach, which is coarse sand, rather dirty and full of sand flies!
The only redeeming quality this resort had, was the animacion team who worked tirelessly to ensure that visitors were entertained and amused,a hard task considering that they have no costumes, or eqipment to do so, yet are expected to put on shows to amuse guests.

The beach is on the atlantic side so can be very choppy dragging in lots of sea weed i wouldn't reccomend swiming in the sea unless you are a strong swimmer. The red flag was always displayed, There are lots of under water currents that can be very strong and tend to pull you under.
