Beaches

Beach was great. However, this is a very quiet resort at night and we ran out of options after a 2 week stay. Snorkelling is best, as is a trip to Valetta. Much of Malta looks half-finished. It seems that the livelier resorts do not have beaches and those with beaches are generally quieter. I enjoyed Malta as a one-off, but I do not think that I would like to go back any time soon (not as a family resort)

beach brilliant during the day. At night time nothing happens on the beach other that local family BBQ's which if you talked to locals, you got invited to,

The Riu Seabank is in the beach resort area of the village, the main part of the village is three quarters of a mile uphill. Resort entertainment during our stay was none other than the patching of some of the roads, where EU standards for health and safety seem to have gone out of the window. Resort cleanliness is typically Maltese and lacking. Beach standard is normally good but stormy weather meant seaweed and litter blowing about although put into piles for collection later. This beach would be totally different during summer and probably a great beach then.

As far as the resort goes, it has not changed at all in 25 years. There are no more bars on the prom at all, and it is still not very well lit. The only nice thing to see on the beach at night are the maltese families enjoying the BBQ's at the weekend.

This resort was ideal for us and also if you had children the resort was very clean and the entertainment was good. the beach standard was very clean even though we went in December it was good for a paddle. I would definitely visit this resort again.

Mellieha is a small one street town somewhat out on a limb at the far N.W. end of Malta. (Apprx 50mins transfer time on a good day from the airport at Luqa).
Its set on a steep hill with a noisy narrow main street running through its centre. This broadens out at the bottom of the town before its final 1km+ stretch winding further downhill to the beach. At this end it also has a large spectacular church offering a stunning vista over the bay and beyond to Comino and Gozo. The summer sunsets are spectacular!
The street is typically Maltese in being a little grubby around the edges, not particularly attractive apart from the lower end around the church but apart from the traffic noise its essentially ok.
Evening entertainment is virtually non-existent apart from a few bars and restaurants. The usual smattering of shops occupy its length and you can purchase just about anything you need. There are jewelers, car hire places, mini- markets, a pharmacy, a fruit & veg shop et al and a little further on over the very top a petrol station and a few more misc. shops too.
As said the beach, the best in Malta is a further 1km+? away down the hill. It is essentially clean, wide and sandy with shallow waters and like the rest of Malta & Gozo of a brilliantly clear deep blue/turquoise colour. Two sunbeds and a parasol can be hired here for 10 euros a day.
Be warned there are literally only a couple shops/cafes on/next to the beach. If you want provisions/drinks/sandwiches etc there is an excellent little mini-market backing the beach. Its part of a Danish (Danske Folke Ferie) holiday village. This can be reached by car turning off at the roundabout or on foot via a tunnel under the road leading directly from the beach itself.
Back to the towns main street; running parallel on both sides are areas of residential dwellings the majority being of typical square Maltese 'style' complete with water tanks/aerials/aircon units placed on their flat roofs.
Within about 1km of the beach these give way to cliffs /green areas and newer buildings that are easier on the eye.

the beach was very crowded and the sea had jelly fish. not something that can be helped but it didnt really add to the relaxing holiday we hoped for. we found the locals very unfriendly. it took a number of days with us going into the same shop before we got an eye contact or thanks for our customer. we hired a car which enabled us to explore the island. we enjoyed this aspect of our visit
