we didn't travel around that much as ours was vey much a sunbather and book by the pool kind of holiday. but talking to others who ventured out, it would appear that there was plenty to see and do. we did walk down to the lido which looked great fun especially as you could safely swin in the sea to a platform, the area is surrounded by many eateries of varying nationalities. I would suggest that you hunt around for excursions and not just take the one your rep offers you as there seems to be better value for money elsewhere.

The Pestana Miramar was in a good location in between town area and the Lido area, 15 minute walk either way. Distinct lack of bars, if you just want a drink.
No shortage of good restaurants. Good meal at Jardin do Infante. Come out of hotel and turn left to town, ten minute stroll on left of main road. Also to the left, get to the Pestana Carlton and to the left you will see an Indian restaurant, take the road to the left and we found a marvellous restaurant the Dona Amelia, just on the right after Moynehans Irish bar. One of the few places we could have a nice relaxing drink. Entertainment some evenings. Not a bad menu here either. Quite a few locals seemed to use it.
Plenty of restaurants out to the right of the hotel towards the lido area. Best we found was the Restaurant Terrace D'Ajuda. Pass Reids on your left and first right, only ten minutes walk. This must be the best value place I have been to anywhere, 18.95 Euros for the three course menu. We were given a Madeira wine while we were looking at the menu on the street. We had smoked salmon and chicken salad to start, tuna and mixed fish espetada, jacket potatoes and fresh vegetables, with a side salad which would have been a meal on its own. Could'nt eat the dessert, wife managed to push down some fresh fruit. Drinks included, we had two lagers and a bottle of house wine. Complimentry brandies. Parrots outside. Ate here a few times, terrific.
Nice town area and marina. Fireworks competition every Saturday through June. Cable car trip up just past the marine was well worth it for the views. Nice laid back holiday.

Very much for the older generation, lovely Island and resort. Lovely friendly people. Hired a taxi before we arrived and had a beautiful Island tour. Works out much cheaper than trips with tour operator's. And see lots of extra sites. Look on internet for "taxi's in funchal". We found a great english speaking guy who was very knowledgable.

The resort of Funchal was satisfactory, but very 'built-up, and stretching over a very large area. I thought the centre, harbour, and old town were particularly attractive, but you could find the accomodation quite a long way out.
I was impressed with the bus services, which were cheap and regular, but it was not easy to follow the timetables and locate the correct bus stops in the centre.
There were some very attractive pavement cafes and a multitude of eating places.
I did not use the beaches or partake in any entertainment, so I can only give an 'average' mark.

The is only a black beach at Funchal which is not very inviting. The town is interesting but be prepared for steep walks. Plenty of places to eat and lots of shops. If you go on excursion book locally not at the hotel. We paid 47 euros each for a trip from the hotel which we later saw advertised in the town for 30 euros.

Funchal is a great place for exploring the small streets and seeing how the people live, there is an abundance of places to eat and of course individual tastes differ, do not fall into the trap, if it looks good it tastes good, quite the reverse, some lovely looking places serve garbage. I found Arsenios truly Madeira and a great atmosphere with some fado thrown in. If your partner does not like heights then be very wary of hiring a car, take all roads from Funchal as these are better with a lot of tunnels to the tourist areas, you do not need a car for 7 days I did 3 and that was more than enough. The weather on the north side of the island is in complete contrast to the south so take note.
The weather can change at a moments notice at this time of the year but it is not to cold. The Xmas lights come on the 1st December so that would be the best time to go.
I found the island slightly disappointing and very expensive to eat out, I wouldn’t recommend lavada walks this time of the year, Funchal is nice but there is a lot of poetic license about the island in general.

The staff were really friendly, the food was OK and the hotel itself was clean and tidy.
We would definitely go back. In fact my parents, aunty & uncle have already booked up to stay in October 2008!

Plenty to see and enjoy in Funchal and trips out to visit other areas of the island worthwhile. The cable car to Monte and visit to the spectacular Palace Gardens well worth doing. Everywhere was clean and tidy, no rubbish or graffiti to spoil the public areas. Everywhere beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, all well tended and very colourful. Old Funchal with its narrow cobbled streets particularly nice. Whilst appreciating that tourism is now Madeira's main source of income it's a shame to see so many new huge hotels being built on the sites of what used to be private houses, often now obliterating views that other hotels previously enjoyed. If development along the coastline continues at the present rate within the next few years Madeira stands a good chance of losing its charm and appeal for many visitors and it will be the poorer in the longer term for creating mass tourism on the scale seen in other countries.
