Funchal to me was a disapointment.
I found it to be unkept and a bit scruffy.
We stayed 20 mins walk out side in the Lido area.
I felt it was much nicer there if only there had not been so much major building going on.
No beaches but lovely lidos.
I would like to visit Funchal area again when it's finished!

The resort was Beautiful. It was so picturesque! There isn't much entertainment, but we didn't go here for this.
There isn't a beach but we didn't mind this either. The Hotel was enough!

Madeira is a fantastic island, well worth a visit. Very freindly people, beaware of overcharging taxi drivers and not puttin on meter. Cable car well worth visit, beaware of the tobogon ride in Monte, that at the end, there is a taxi rank, and youre stuck between the top and the bottom, and they can charge you any amount to bring you back to Funchal.
100 euro taxi tours well worth it. Day trip around the island. Excellent vlaue. Make sure you get a good english speaking driver.

Very clean- as expected. Enternainment seemed sparse. We didn't search it out but the resort is fairly quiet. No raucus tavernas or discos. Not for the young who like a lot of noise. Stayed next to casino which was detached from hotel. Some noise a couple of nights at the weekend but somewhat distant and nor intrusive ( we faced the entrance and found people watching entertainig). Walking a big thing here - along the watercourses. Not if you suffer from verigo so we didn't try it anyway.
No beaches on the island hence poor marking

Funchal is a lovely city with some nice shops. The harbour front is nice too and you may get the chance to see the odd Cruise Liner which we did one only (Aurora) but only from a distance. Apparently though June is quiet for liners coming to the harbour. We managed to see the firework display which was nice. They have one every Saturday in June by the harbour. It is a competition between several countries to compete to do the New Year display. Restaurants are hit and miss but you will find your personal choice/favourites. Ours was Solar de Ajuda which was over the road from our hotel and up the hill. It was always packed (good sign). The island is beautiful and you really do need to visit all the island to apprieciate it. The weather was mixed when we were there, very hot some days, cloudy others. I don't think it is a 'sit on your sun lounger all day kind of holiday' but if you like to mix both relaxing and sight-seeing it is perfect.

Funchal is a lovely town for those that appreciate a little ambience. If you like nightclubs, lager, Weatherspoons pubs, sandy beaches and wear trainers or rings in your nose I suggest it's definitely not the place for you. The Lido area promenade has been extended further NW along the coast as far as the Madeira Forum Shopping Centre. There is one hill to climb (or descend) coming out of Funchal going NW towards the Lido, after which it’s fairly flat. However, any deviation left or right off of the main road and invariably you will be faced with another steep descending decline or another hill. Stacks of nice restaurants and coffee shops for all tastes. A return trip up to Monte on the cable car is a must. I recommend two very good Restaurants (the Casa Velha and Dona Amelia) on the Rua Imperatriz D. Amelia, a small road just up from the Pestana Casino Hotel. In the old part of Funchal try the Portao, it's tucked into the extreme eastern end of the town 200 metres before you get to the Fort on the left.

No beach but the Lido is very good.
Madeira is one of the cleanest places I have ever visited.

We stayed in the hotel region of Funchal about 15 mins taxi from the centre of Funchal.
There is a Lido area for swimming in the sea. as there are very few beaches in Madeira. The surrounding area has lots of hotels and restaurants and a new shopping complex has opened within walking distance of most hotels in this area.
Although there are lots of hotels and restaurants and we were told all hotels were busy the resort did not feel crowded and had a very relaxed atmosphere.
Not a lot of night life in this area apart from what the hotels have to offer, but a nice relaxing stroll along the promenade was lovely.

Old Funchal still retains its charm with an array of good restaraunts and shops. It has a busy marina where you can go deep sea fishing or whale watching from. Please ignore the Time Share touts, if approached DO NOT STOP and walk on with a polite No Thanks. It was cringeingly bad to watch a British couple "winning" a prize on a scratchcard.
Building work is going on around the Classic Savoy up the hill from the old town but is not to bad at the moment. Loads of good restaraunts around the Savoy and you must try the Brazilian opposite the Savoy.T he steak is superb and if you want to see what a real "Kebab" is like you will be amazed when staff bring freshly cooked skewered beaf to your table and cut mouth watering slivers of the most succulent meat you will ever taste directly onto your plate. Other entertainment is developing, the Casino has some good late night entertainment on. Some classical events on in the old town also. Superbly clean probably still very little crime but I do wonder about drink driving laws. All in All still a great place for a relaxing holiday free from lager louts.

Funchal is not a beach holiday. The resort its self is hilly in places, the old town has lots of character and well worth visiting. We used the local buses alot and found them very cheap and plentiful. As we went in January there was not as many flowers around as ther would be in the summer months, but the place still had lots of colour. I would reccomend this resort to people who like to get about and relax at the same time.
