2nd visit to Madeira, this time we hired a car well worth it we were able to go up into the hills when the weather was overcast at sea level, there we found good weather.

Madeira not the place to take young children, think they would get bored. Also very hilly so if you are not too good on your legs give Madeira a second thought.

Overall a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday. Can't wait for our next trip.

Food - if you like curry try the Taj Mahal near the Crown Plaza Hotel (by the bridge) also the A'jouda Restaurant near the Monumental Lido Steak on the Stone, a meal to die for.........

Funchal is a fabulous place with loads to do. There are plenty of clothes and shoe shops too! Loads of places to eat and drink and some beautiful architecture. I would recommend it to anyone althought bare in mind that it is rather hilly so you may need to do a fair amount of walking!

Funchal needs alot of work to bring it up to the standard of other resorts.

For a resort that attracts a lot of older people we were amazed at the number of cracked paving stones and pot holes in the pavements. We walked past one drainage system where there was a gap at the side big enough for a child to fall down.

The town of Funchal seems to be in a dip and with the amount of traffic the air becomes very polutted. Definitely not a place for beach lovers or people who like to cool off in the sea - except for the extremely strong swimmer. The sea was very rough and most of the beaches are full of pebbles. The odd one has less pebbles but black sand.

In the town centre we found the restaurants there cheaper and more authentic (Madeiran) than the Hotel zone. Everywhere made us welcome with our toddler, most places have a high chair.
There is a little play area by the Lido, great for the toddler to let off some steam. Plenty to do in Funchal, the buses are quite easy once you take the plunge!

Funchal is a lovely tradional Town with lots to offer all ages. Slow ambling walks along the shore or bowling, cinema and a few nightclubs. We found the pace of life lovely and relaxed, making you feel you really have had a holiday compared to our hectic life in England! The Beach is none existant but the level of cleanliness throughout is exceptional.

Funchal is very popular with the more mature visitor rather than the 18-30 group.

The resort is very clean and you generaly feel safe walking around both day and night.

Entertainment in the resort usualy means restaurants of which there are some excellent examples available.

No beach at Funchal, but we found a nice (and empty) beach which had jet black sand on the North of the island.

First visit we did a couple of Thomson tours which were good but soon added to the cost of the holiday, therefore second trip we hired a car which I would recommend to fully appreciate Maderia

Funchal and the environs, although going through a transitional period of new building retains its charm.

At no time did we have reason for complaint for any reason whatsoever.

As expected clean tidy and decent to walk, safely and in full appreciation of the towns/ areas efforts to grow, the odd repair needs doing on the odd pavement but if I was writing this about where I live or even other small towns that compare in size to funchal and surrounding districts I would need a 20 page A4 to put the faults down on our roads, services, cleanliness. We can learn from other countries and Madeira can teach us a lot about road building and how not to dig everything up and road works etc.

The Funchal/ most built up areas are all well lit, safe in respect to criminal activity and the weather gives it a full set of credentials in respect to visiting again ...yes I would, will and look forward to it.

Can the same be said about our streets in the UK????? I think not. Maybe the few exceptions but a few is all, whereas Funchal and Madeira generally is safe for all the family alike from young to old! Like it should be everywhere.

The beaches in Madeira are non existantant or very rare, really just great big boulders, but there again the islands off Madeira offer sand, sea and...... A boat ride to get it if you’re a sand worshipper there’s something for you, but if you like great big stones and into rocks ....Madeira is just up your street.

Overall I can not find fault with maderia, I like it, I would love to live there it has the qualities we miss so much in our country and most likely others as well, it's not the raving centre of entertainment but its good qualities are there, to have a great holiday, break or just switch off. I have seldom found elsewhere, I know it beats Todmorden west Yorkshire.

The whole hotel is laid out well, functional and very useable, that said, I hope it keeps its qualities for years to come as I intend to visit there as regular as I can, up to 5 or 6 times a year.

There isn't really a beach at Funchal so we can't really comment. It is very pleasant to just walk around and sit at a pavement cafe with a drink. Also to watch the big cruise liners in the port. Some of the Christmas lights were on and I would like to return one year in December to see all of them lit.I imagine it is quite spectacular. The cable car ride is good with views high above the town. You have to be brave to try the toboggans, we didn't.We did the west island tour, marvellous scenery, sheer drop either side of the road.Bus drivers must have nerves of steel. One thing everyone should do is have Tea at Reids. It is quite expensive but an experience.Yes we would definately return to Madeira and the Monumental Lido.

The resort does not have any beaches so it doesnt attract the "Beach Mob" which is great for all of us!
