Funchal itself is busy, with plenty of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. The people are freindly and very laid back. Entertainment is quite low key. Not may discos, if we only saw one, and it was closed.
Madeira is not famed for its beaches. There are some however but rocky and pebbly. The best secrets of Madeira is in the interior. Hire a car or take excursions into the island. The scenery is fantastic. The roads can be a bit hair raising but this adds to the enjoyment. We plan ob going back as soon as possible for the New Year when they say the firework display is fantastic!

Funchal is probably losing its soul a little as it expands. Nicer places can be found outside Funchal. The cable-car ride from Funchal to Monte is a must. As is a drive or tour along the north coast of the island (Porto Moniz to Santana).
If you hire a car: Funchal itself is a confusing town to drive around and also to get out of! There is a distinct lack of meaningful road signs! Do hire a car if you intend to venture to the north of the island however.
The taxi drivers are polite/helpful and getting around is inexpensive that way.
A big thumbs up to a small restaurant called The Mozart Restaurant towards Camara De Lobos from Funchal. Most of the other eateries in/around Funchal (the ones that we tried anyway) are not so good - unless you'd like to eat Scabbard fish with banana every single day.

We found the resort to be fairly clean and the cafes and restuarants very friendly though most produced the same menus but it did not spoil our stay in this resort - we also found the resort very relaxing

The Tivoli Ocean Park is situated to the west of Funchal in what appears to be an up and coming area with several 5* hotels and what looked like high class apartments. There were numerous restaurants in this area all vying for your custom, howver the best meal we had also happened to be the cheapest at the China King chinese restaurant. Great food and service. Worst meal was at the Tricolor Italian restaurant. Awful service and indifferent staff.
There was little in the way of entertainment, but this appeared normal as it was largely confined to the hotels. The beach rating is due to there not being one! Very clean environment with only minor building work to be seen. Plenty of taxi ranks on hand to take you around the island or just into Funchal which cost 5 Euros.

Funchal was clean and well planted with flowers and plants, it was very pretty. Entertainment is mainly around hotels so again I cannot comment on this. There are some good restaurants and a handful of bars, the irish pub on the monumental lido had some good entertainment on every night. Funchal has not got a beach as such, there is a small area of brownish sand just past the harbour. The cable car ride was good but they take a photograph of you which they try to sell when you get off at the top, bit of a rip off. They also do this on the toboggans, if you don't want the photo you must be firm and say no as they try to be pretty pursuasive with you. The weather was very varied for April, we had 3 nice days out of the week we stayed. We hired a car from Avis, the roads are not that bad once you get out of Funchal but signposts are confusing. The weather is completely different up in the mountains, its freezing cold and misty, you need wet weather gear and good walking boots if you intend to walk the levadas.

Spotless city with well cared for gardens and an excellent bus service. http://www.horariosdofunchal.pt/en/index.htm
Do some research on the net and plan some levada walks, these along with the cable car and the botanical gardens are the best thing about Funchal.
The levada da piornais is easy to find from the tourist area and an excellent flat walk when you do eventually get up the massive hill to the start of the levada.

gives some good walks accessable from Funchal too, we did the bus 29 one.
It's not a beach holiday at all, but there is plenty to do on Madeira.

The resort complex is spotless with 3 pools overlooking the sea. There is a small finess room and sauna suite. There are poolside snack bars and plenty of free sun loungers. There are no beaches on the island. There are also superb public lounges on several floors. The facilities of the old Savoy Hotel are also available and access is over a footbridge. The contrast of both hotels is very marked, the modern Royal with the Victorian Savoy both worth a visit. Entertainment is not over the top and is typical of 5 star hotels on the island but there is the nearby Casino for other entertainment along with a variety of good restauraunts and pubs. Larger louts are not allowed on the island and crime is relatively a rare occurence. But it has a varied age group not a predominant OAP detination. I intend to have a yearly short holiday on the island for the rest of (hopefully)my very long life.

Funchal is a beautiful town, with plenty of character. we visited in January just before the Christmas decorations were taken down, and they were fantastic.
There are no beaches, and it is quite hilly, but we enjoyed walking around, the sea views are beautiful. There are plenty of buses but I found one or two of the bus drivers were grumpy (I think it was because I got off at the drivers door rather than in the middle). The flower market is lovely, and the cable car ride up to the gardens at Monte is a great trip out.
We do not recommend hiring a car - we nearly burnt the clutch out on ours when we got lost and had to do a hill start. It is VERY VERY HILLY - the minor roads seem almost vertical. Maybe if you can hire a 4 wheel drive it might be OK but there's plenty of buses around the islands. We were warned to avoid the cheap trips provided by the time share companies, as you may have to spend several hours in a sales presentation.
We tried out a trip to a local football match - the fans didn't stop singing all evening. Also there are classical music concerts - I saw a group of young mandolin players, who were fantastic.
This place has got class - the local food is delicious, the scenery is fantastic. And the public toilets are spotless. A fantastic relaxing winter break.
