altinkum is a lovely resort if you are on an 18 to 30 holiday only comes alive at 8pm then goes on till 6am so dont expect to get alot of sleep whilst there. it is not a small fishing village what travel agents tell you. and the costs to get anywhere out of altinkum is daylight robbery so unless you want to lie on beach all day and club all night then altinkum is for you. a must is ikbals bar on sea front and seven cafe bar next to big nose bar are a must so friendly and family bars dont miss them

Altinkum has grown considerably in the 10 years I have been visiting it. Unfortunately a lot of ex-pats now have apartments and/or live there. As a consequence they are trying to change things to suit residents as opposed to holiday-makers. Having said that Altinkum is still a good base. It is easy to get to historical sites and the beaches are good family beaches, the sea is safe and if you look around you can still find a couple of small shingle beaches tucked away that are quiet and allow some reasonable snorkling/ fishing. Utilities however lag slightly behind Altinkums increased popularity espessially in July/August when the Turkish people have their holidays.
The Marina area has improved with the investment put in.

Loads of lovely restuarants and bars, beach rather crowded, you do get hassled, but a polite 'no thanks. maybe another time' always did the trick.
Try Mercury Resturant and Ali G's.

There are lots of stray dogs in Altinkum and I think the bars have caught on to the fact that the Brits are animal lovers so tend to have a dog or puppy lingering around but they really don't care about these animals. There was one that hung around the hotel - probably about 5/6 months old - lovely little chap, so friendly but thin. I stroked it and his big eyes seemed to light up - next thing some disgusting old gardener came charging at him wielding his hedge shears and shouting at me in Turkish but the words stupid and woman were in English. It took an awful lot of control not to give him a mouthful and slosh him with his own shears. We then found the hotel has another dog, in a large cage type enclosure round the back of the hotel. This alone is enough to make me not return to Altinkum. The town is not particularly clean and several of the shopkeepers are extremely rude, bordering on aggressive. I was chased along the road because I wouldn't buy from one of them. The one next to Nigel's Bar on the seafront is rude and the first bag shop as you go into the covered market, very aggressive.
We ate out our last night in the Moonshine bar literally across the road from the main entrance - they really looked after us, the food was super and it wasn't expensive.
Well, that's my review - everybody is obviously free to make up their mind and many probably have a good time but I will not be returning to the Garden of Sun which we renamed Garden of Chicken nor Altinkum again. Icmeler or Belek are a different world in comparison. We and several others are also taking issue with the all inclusive concept through large tour operators. We were First Choice but Thomas Cook were there as well - there is an attitude of "we've got your money, now we don't care". While we continue to support all inclusive this attitude will continue.
