Reading the subject heading I hear you all saying well that makes a change, an EU ruling that doesn't suck!
Well I am sorry to burst all your bubbles but this really is an EU ruling that literally doesn't suck, from the 1st of September a new EU ruling comes in to force which limits the power of vacuum cleaners to 1600 watts with a further reduction in 2017 to only 900 watts.
So if you want a powerful vacuum it is the time to go and buy one before they are all gone.

Why stop at vacuum cleaners? They might as well do lawn mowers, kettles, toasters, tumble dryers too! They will all use the same energy as more powerful ones, it will just take twice as long. Genius.
I wish they would tell me my electric lawn mower was to powerful
Frank, as I understand it restrictions on kettles, hair straighteners, toasters etc. will also be brought in eventually!
What is required is an improvement in energy efficiency on devices, so you use less power to give the same outcome in the same time. Devices that rely on heat to function, like kettles, hair straighteners, tumble dryers and toasters can't make much improvement in efficiency as they are designed to throw heat away as part of their function.
