I think you will find that most "British" ships are registered abroad so would not come under any English law. I sailed on Fred Olsen from Grenwich and there was no ban on smoking even in Port, though smoking has been banned in Scotland for a while.
The Island Star does not encourage smoking in the cabins, but the cabin steward will give you an ashtray if you ask for one.
I think if I remember correctly from reports I have read that smoking will be banned on cruise ships while they are in British waters or docked in british ports no matter were they are registered. However this ban is on enclosed public places I dont know if they would count smoking on the open deck as an enclosed public space. I dont smoke so it doesnt really affect me although I would like to see the British authorities try an enforce this ban on cruise ships as they do spot checks to make sure pubs etc are complying with the law how will they do this on a ship thats out at sea?
Some ships have a cigar room or "club".
Smoking in the cabins is not encouraged; I don't believe the smoke detector is capable of picking-up cigarette smoke as aircraft sensors can.
No restrictions were emplaced whilst in port EXCEPT when refuelling. Our ship was powered by Gas Turbines (GTS Constellation) and with a million dollars worth of gas being loaded when docked at Aruba I think the smoking restriction on the open decks was wise.
My only concern before i booked was smoking and smoking on the cruises what they allowed and so on.
Most of the information on this forum is hard to find in with different threads ect so i thought i would start a thread just
based on cruises, ships, experience all about smoking.
So if anyone who is a smoker and has had good or bad experience on a cruise because you were a smoker feel free to make a post,
also list any ships u know that allow smoking and where.
I myself have emailed a few companies and here is what i have found out so far:-
Fred olsen cruises do allow smoking in cabins on the following ships:-
black watch
braemar
black prince
you are not allowed to smoke in resturants but there are areas on board where u can smoke inc bars.
P@o cruises have emailed me this:-
As I am sure you will appreciate, all our policies are under constant
review and are subject to change. We will of course keep you updated if
changes are made as a result of any further review, although at present
we
expect the policy for all cruises departing after 1 July 2007 to be as
follows: Smoking will be permitted in cabins (including cabin
balconies),
on certain areas of the open decks, in the casino on certain evenings
and
in designated smoking areas of one or two public rooms.
Our policy is and will remain fully compliant with applicable law and
is
designed to reflect the public attitude towards smoking, protecting
those
who do not wish to smoke whilst still recognising the needs of our
smoking
passengers.
So as you can see all p@o cruises allow cabin smoking, decks, casino, certain evenings and designated areas too.
ships that allow these are:-
arcadia
artemis
aurora
oceana
oriana
ventura
RCI-Navigator of the seas-cant smoke in cabin and there are designated areas of the ship but allowance for smokers in space
is very clattered and you are fighting for a smoking place.
All the info i have please feel free to add ships and your experiences aboard them
thanx
simon
You can smoke in your cabin, you have to request an ashtray however.
Plenty of smoking areas in all bars and down one side of the ship.
The english two poets pub is completely all smoking (and always packed to the hilt). The singer guitarist is excellent.
In fact lots of people who were walking or sitting in the Royal Promenade would just pop into this bar to light up, using the ashtrays off the tables.
I would say that the smokers are more looked after than the non smokers.
Cheers.
also there is 1 bar on the ship which is a smoking bar.
however none of the resturants allow smoking.
hope this helps..
just booked a OV cruise for 16th august does anyone know how or if the smoking ban in england will effect cruise ships?
I am very worried as I have just booked a cruise on OV but have read two reviews that state the stench from the smoke in public rooms is terrible. Does anyone know if there is a non-smoking bar? It would be so much better if cruise ships had a least one bar and cabins that were non-smoking - I always dread having booked a cabin where the previous occupier smoked. It must be possible for cruise operators to meet the needs of both non-smokers and smokers.
from my first post apologies on navigator someone told me u couldnt smoke in cabins but thanx for correcting it.
as per email from p&o the smoking ban will not really effect cruise ships
you may have a problem with ships registered in uk but most arnt.
We were allowed to smoke in your cabin, in the casino, (although they did have one non smoking night during the week which was only fair)on the open deck, starboard side only and in various bars. There was only one bar where you could smoke pipes and cigars I think it was the Connesoir's Club. It was nicely decorated as a gentlemen's club, it had a couple of small windows obscusred by life boats so was quite gloomy and very smelly. The Two Poets bar was all and the only one to serve coffee, cappucino only, it had smoking, inside, probably not at the outside tables on the Royal Promenade. It had no windows at all, but you could see the RP. It was very hard to get a seat on sea days, but seemed to have good ventilation so wasn't very smoky.
The wine bar allowed smoking at the bar, but that was about all, it was similar in location to the Two Poets, as was the Champagne Bar. There were a couple of adjoining bars at the top of the ship each had a few smoking tables. These bars had a fantastic view from the windows, but the smoking tables were mostly taken up for long periods of time by non-smokers reading, playing cards or just enjoying the view. All in all smoking tables were in the minority mostly limited to about 4 tables in each bar. Non smokers had a much better choice of seats
We managed to find a smoking table here, and were happliy watching the world go by when someone sat at the next table and made a terrific fuss about my husband smoking. It was VERY unpleasant. She said there was no smoking in any of the bars. When I checked with Reception, they said the same although I found out later that it was wrong. it made me think that their plans for the future were fo non smoking bars. there is no smoking in the theatre, restaurants or ice rink.
Before that we were on the Black Watch where smoking was allowed in cabins, and some bars, notably the one next to the restaurant which was usually thick with smoke and where it was quite often difficult to find a seat. They also allowed smoking on the deck, although once again Reception gave out the wrong information, and said smoking was not allowed on deck.
The Boudicca has very little smoking. Other ships were a quite a while ago and may well have changed their policy in the mean time.
Hope this helps.
sorry if this has been covered somewhere else and I've not spotted it!
We're booked to go on the Balmoral next March and there are 2 smokers in our party of 2 couples. We were told when we booked that smoking wasn't permitted in our cabin or out on our balcony, but smoking is permitted in designated public areas.
I've just been checking the Fred Olsen web site to see where these designated areas are. The Balmoral isnt listed yet as she's not in service with FO until January next year but I've noticed that on Braemar and Black Prince there's just one public area on each where you can smoke.
My question is: Are you permitted to smoke when you're out on the public deck areas on any of the Fred Olsen ships?
We're already having "jitters" as we're having a few problems with our booking. I'd just like to make sure I understand their policy on this before we get to the point where we can't bail out!

Merged with existing topic.
I was just reading your posting about the stench of smoke in cabins. You may (or may not) have read my later posting which is a few posts down from your own.....
We're booked onto Fred Olsens new ship the Balmoral (launches in January 2008) All the cabins on this ship are non smoking. My husband thought he'd be able to smoke out the balcony which is why we booked a balcony cabin but even out there in the open air you're not permitted to smoke. Not a worry for me as I'm a non smoker myself!
I think more and more cruise lines are considering non smokers ahead of the smokers which is great in most respects. I do see it from both sides though. I'm currently trying to find out if he'll be able to smoke on the public deck areas. If we're restricted to only one public lounge and nowhere else (including the public decks) then I think we'll have to re-consider our booking.
I find the biggest problem with having only one designated area for smoking - it gets utterly chocked up with smoke and people as the seats get taken up by non smoking partners of the smoker (including myself) making it difficult for smokers to find a comfortable place to sit.
We were on the Thomson Spirit last September and in the designated smoking area in the casino bar you almost got killed in the crush when a smoking table became available!!

I'm in the same position as you Enchantica and agree totally with everything you say. I couldn't go on a cruise where smoking is so heavily restricted, it's not as though you can pop off whenever you feel like it is it?
Many thanks for the tip. I will look into booking on Fred Olson - we have never sailed with that company before. We are booked for this year and next though!! We had the opposite problem with the casino on Thomson Celebration over the New Year - it was so fuggy we never managed to gamble although I suppose that could be a good thing It is a huge problem for both non-smokers and smokers. I suppose on the bigger ships it would be possible to keep both sides happy - it's the smaller ones which will find it tough - perhaps they will have to have smoking and non-smoking weeks!
Happy Cruising!!
Does anyone know if you can smoke on Royal Caribbean ships, especially Voyager of the Seas? We leave from Barcelona for 7 night Med cruise in Nov 2007. Can you buy cigs on board please? or do you buy them at the port? All answers appreciated. Us smokers must stick together now
You can smoke outdoors, they prefer smokers keep to the Starboard side, but not sure how often that happens. You can smoke in your cabin, however that will change Jan 1st 2008. You can smoke in the casino and their policy states that you can smoke in some lounge/bar areas, although I don't know which ones. They sell cigarettes in the Duty Free shop onboard. You can only purchase them by carton, not pack.
