just got back off the emerald (thompsons ship) and you can smoke in cabin,1 bar and anywhere out doors on the ship..
as you are on a ship all the bars have a exit door to outside so no great hardship to pop in and out when you need a ciggie
Just been looking at the Cunard web site, they say that on the QE2 you can even smoke in some parts of the dining rooms. Can it be true?
Yes,all except for the Princess Grill. All their public rooms have smoking areas......

Beginning in January 2008, smoking will be prohibited in all staterooms and suites, and one designated lounge on each ship. Smoking is currently permitted in designated areas in the bars and outside on open decks. All other areas onboard RCCL's ships are non-smoking, including elevators and showrooms.
Emdia 43 kindly referred me to cruise critic for reviews on a ship we're thinking of cruising with next year and we came across this which might be some help Beginning in January 2008, smoking will be prohibited in all staterooms and suites, and one designated lounge on each ship. Royal Caribbean has announced that beginning in January, all cabins and one lounge on each ship will be designated as no-smoking areas. Currently, smoking is prohibited in hallways and corridors, restaurants, entertainment venues and most interior public spaces, except for designated areas in bars and lounges.
After the new policy is in place, passengers may still smoke in certain areas of the outer decks, in designated bars and lounges, and on cabin and suite balconies.
Norwegian also announced revisions to their onboard smoking policy, which are effective immediately. The new policy designates as smoke-free all indoor public areas, with the exception of casinos and cigar lounges. Several outdoor public spaces are affected by the new policy as well - smokers must now stay a "reasonable distance" from restaurants, jogging tracks, recreational areas and children's pools. In cabins and on balconies, guests may still smoke cigarettes, but pipes and cigars are not allowed.

We were thinking of booking a cruise with MCS next year but their liberal smoking policy onboard has caused us to rethink and we are going back on the Celebration.
We were on Ocean Village in August. Their smoking policy was excellent. The 'pub' was all smoking but all the other bars were smoke free. Smoking was also allowed in the casino and in the nightclub after the gym closed. On deck, smokers were asked to keep to one side. Unfortunately people can still smoke in cabins but we were lucky and the previous occupants of our cabin were also non-smokers. I wish it was possible to book non-smoking cabins. Ocean Village's smoking policy helped to make our holiday a good one as there were plenty of places to go which were smoke-free. We normally enjoy(!) losing money in the casino but it was too smelly for us so we saved a fortune!
Just received a letter from P&O today which states that smoking will not be permitted in cabins on the cruise we are doing on 22 September on the Oceana. Smoking will be allowed on cabin balconies, on certain areas of the open decks and in desginated smoking areas of one or two public rooms.
Being a smoker I have found this helpful
I got the same letter just before Christmas for my wekender Luci. Im not sure if you have been on the Ocxeana before, but if you need to know anything let me know. If I dont know from previous visit, will find out on my next for you.

Well I would like to know where the smoking areas are on the Oceana if you wouldn't mind. Also how much the alternative restaurants are.
luci
Ok will check that out for def as we have a smoker in our party too. When I was on last time it was about £7.50pp.....but will double check for you.
Mandy, I have now read that article and unfortunately it's out of date as far as P&O are concerned. It was only updated on 14 January and yet Kath had a letter about it last year.
I'm quite annoyed really as I partly chose this cruise as smoking was permitted when I booked it. They could solve the problem by having designated smoking and non-smoking cabins.

I agree Luci.
I dont think it will be long before they are all non smoking!

http://www.pocruises.com/before-you-sail/faq-Life-On-Board/Smoking.aspx still states that smoking is allowed in cabins and balconies
Thanks Mandy. I have emailed P&O stating that their website is still stating that smoking is permitted. Don't expect to get very far, but at least I have made my feelings known.
RCI reckon they'll charge £250 for anyone caught smoking in the cabin cos it's against the rules. Wonder if they'll impose the same penalty on people reserving sunloungers too ';o)?
We went on the Destiny in nov 2007 and you could smoke in two of the bars, cabin and the right hand side of the ship which i dont really understand the latter as this side was inclosed.
I understand that people that dont smoke dont want a cabin that stinks of stale smoke ( i wouldnt like it and i am a smoker ) but wouldnt it just be easier for the cruise liners to have smoking or non smoking cabins and keep everyone happy.
I love my cruises but if they went totally smoke free then i wouldnt be able to cruise anymore
Kerrie
for those that are interested I recieved an e-mail from P&O yesterday on their smoking policy----but I accidently deleted it !!!!lol
What I can remember is;
Oceana---no smoking at all.
Oriana--smoking is allowed in all cabins--on one side of the deck --one side of crows nest.
All other ships are about the same as Oriana--cabins and designated part of one bar.
MM
I have not long received a letter from them re smoking on Oceana, and there were a couple of areas where it was allowed.
