I love Anjuna market, the first time we went there was 1999, I could not believe what I was looking at.
The taxi driver dropped us off at the end of the road and we walked down towards the market, it was fantastic, there was tightrope walkers, fire eaters, acrobats and snake charmers, I thought I had walked into a 1950's film set, we stood watching for about half an hour and it cost me around 30 rupees for a life time of memories, then we carried on to the market, MANIC, ABSOLUTE MANIC, what a great experiance, it took us two hours to walk around the place and we got back in the taxi and we hadn't bought a thing, so we went back the following week to buy our gifts to take home, we have been going back every holiday since and as we walk into the market there is a seller there called Jack the lad who we met on the beach on our first holiday, he seems to appear from know were and 7 years on he remembers us and by name.
I can say to any first timers to Goa you must go to Anjuna market, you will be hustled and bustled and pushed and pulled, barter like hell and you will probably get your wares at the same price you can get them on the beach, but I can tell you it is a wonderful experiance.
We are back in Goa as from the middle of October and I wouldn't miss my trips to the market for the world.
It's certainly an experience.
We stopped off about 4ish on the way back from Mandrem. By that time things are quietening down and the stallholders (in theory) should be a bit more accommodating.

As much as I loved Goa... the only place I didn't enjoy was Anjuna Market, it was far too hectic!
Ingo's was GREAT though, much more my type of place.

We loved it. Was red hot and we got hassled loads but we had a great time. Had one guy follow us around the whole 3 hours banging his drum. Hubbie kept on saying we didn't want it but our little boy made the mistake of tapping it and that was it. He can't have done any other trade in those 3 hours cos he was always at the back of us. Amazing also how no matter how late in the day you go you're always "special price for first morning customer".
My husband flatly refuses to go to Anjuna Market anymore!
I can get him into Panjim for a few hours but Anjuna is definitely off the menu!

We just go for a pizza and a couple of beers at 'Lawrences' - that's our excuse - i love the atmosphere.
Can anyone remember the crazy guy dancing in the middle of the market - haven't seen him for a few years now - might have eventually caught up with him?

Anjuna on a Wednesday!!!! Centre of the universe! I go almost every Wednesday I'm in Goa, spend 3/4 hours in my favourite bar in the middle, sit and people watch, it's amazing! The sights and sounds, also watching the "techniques" the different indians use to get people to their "shops" People from all over the world, quite literally, interesting people to talk to, backpackers, hippies, celebs, and Mr and Mrs Joe Public. It's all there!!! Yes I do agree that there can be hassle, especially on the way in but if you don't show any interest in them they quickly lose interest in you. Did anyone see the young lad with his cow last year? A Jersey type cow with an extra set of forelegs , full size, growing out of it's shoulder, it was for real, perfectly healthy, a six legged cow, if it's still about next season i'll get a photo and post it!

Really, Johnny?
Are you sure you didn't spend too much time in your favourite bar?:glynis

Really ! Saw it on the way in !!!
Saw one like that in Pushkar in 1999, an old Baba had it then, wonder if it`s the same one ? I couldn`t get over it when the faithful followed it down the street as it urinated scooping up and then drinking from cupped hands
don't knock it, 'babe, they sell it by the barrelful in my local, they call it bank's bitter
Yeh!! And we pay £3 a pint for it!

That's for sure. I have never seen it happen down my high street. Shall make sure to give the beasts even more space when I am back in Goa this Christmas.
Lynndan - can't vouch for the beer. I am a wine girl myself which, in my experience, does taste a bit like cow's waste in India. Oh for a decent cabernet sauvignon.

Have to agree with Lozza, I hated it too. It was my first visit and found the heat and crowds overwhelming and that was at 3pm in the afternoon!
I love to go to markets when I'm on holiday, and I can take the haggling and pestering (to me that's all part of it), but I really can't deal with people physically dragging me by my arm.
I first went to Anjuna market in 1999 and it was at least half the size of what it is now. What I noticed was there used to be a load of westerners with stalls but they have all but disappeared, I wonder if they arent allowed to sell there anymore. You wont get any bargains from the Tibetan silver merchants, they dont care as they make their money on the corner at Calangute. Ear cleaners are as annoying as ever, how anyone will ever fall for that one I'll never know.
I feel as though it is very 'commercial' feeling now, however bargain as hard as you want as if you miss out on an item, someone around the corner will always have it!!!!

8 weeks now and on real countdown. For some reason we have never been to anjuna market Wasnt sure if was worth it what to buy or basically is it a load of tat or worth going to? Really recommend Margao as it gives a little flavour of the country when you go through the market and buy some spices at a really reasonable cost. The essence that you smell are unbeviable..
Everyone has gone quiet on this forum!! any other ideas on where to go or just sleep on the beach and have a massage. But that sounds good anyway
As I said only 8 weeks to go and counting

Hi jill, go to anjuna market just for the experience, well worth it
You can get some good stuff there and a lot of tat, just remember, never pay what they ask, always barter. On the other hand, as you say, you will get better deals in Margao and other city markets. Tony
