bannana boats are notoriously slippy

We managed to stay on for a whole five minutes before being bounced off! Then a few minutes later the banana overturned (that was when I hurt myself :? ) and we were all launched into the air!

At the moment I'm finding lying down to be the most comfortable position. I've been prescribed dihydrocodeine which is helping to ease the pain.
I'm tending to take very shallow breaths but my GP has said I must breathe deeply to avoid infection. It hurts though!

Pippy, commiserations :(

This exact same thing happened to me in Protaras when I came off a Jet Ski with my brother a few years ago, I cracked 2 ribs and it was very painful. The doctor strapped me up in the clinic (ruined the chance of a tan ! ) in Protaras and gave me painkillers but said they'd have to heal on there own in there own good time.......it took at least 3 months before I didn't have any pain when I breathed or moved  It's agony and I empathise with you big time.

It was my first and last time on a Jet Ski, the scary thing was I was thrown in the air when we came off at speed after we hit a wave created by another of the several other Jet Ski's around us and I hit the water with such force this is what broke the ribs. I then sank and the scariest thing was being too frightened to come back up for fear of being swiped by another Jet Ski, I was petrified.....Drown or have my head knocked off :? Let alone the misery and embarrasment at having to try and get back on the Jet in the middle of the sea with nothing to push up from and the agony

My brother was convinced I was only winded when I could hardly walk back to the sunbed, you should have seen his face when the doc advised of the 2 broken ribs.

Some of our party went on one of the "Flying Fish" rides in Ayia Napa this summer and this too looked really scary, they were all agreed they couldn't be paid to go back on once they were safely back on dry land

Ouch! :?

It really is like hitting concrete hitting the water at that speed, isn't it?

The doctor strapped me up in the clinic

When I had 2 broken ribs a few years ago they said they no longer strap the rib cage as this hinders the natural repair of the the ribs. If they are strapped this could cause pressure on the ribs thus preventing a clean repair :!:

Pippi, that's exactly how I would describe it and I had a life jacket on too !

Tony, As I was in Cyprus at the time of the strapping up I did get it checked when I arrived back in the UK and my doc confirmed they'd done the right thing. I only wore the strapping for 10 days and then slowly let nature take it's course.

Water is not soft.

Looks like someone has found out.

Silly or perhaps serious question - does your insurance cover an injury gained from hitting it at speed?

You do need to read the small print very carefully.

My insurance paid up when I returned after filing a claim and submitting my receipts from the clinic in Protaras and the prescription for the meds. However I pay top dollar for my holiday insurance due to medical probs and was only covered due to paying the additional costs for "dangerous" activites.

I guess a lot of people don't pay extra as it would seem most policies exclude these type of sports activities.....worth remembering if your going to participate that you could be caught out should you injure yourself.

The hospital didn't strap mine up either, they told me the same thing, that they no longer do this

MC, I was wearing a life jacket too, the impact was so abrupt it came undone!

FWH, I didn't even bother to look at our insurance, I just assumed I wouldn't be covered.
Had it been an injury that required me being put in a cast or staying in hospital then I'd have investigated further.
Because I pretty much knew what I'd done I really didn't want to waste several hours in Sharm hospital :?

Get well soon Pippy, there very dangerous things, I only ever went on one and never again

Make sure you take a laxative with the dihydrocodeine as my dad took it for broken ribs and ended up in hospital because of not taking the laxative

Thanks Jenny

Colette, I was only today thinking about that. I'm making sure I eat plenty of fruit and veg at the moment to keep things moving! How long was your Dad in pain for?

About 6 weeks Pippy before it started to ease, and then it slowely mended :D

Nothing as exciting as a banana ride though, he fell over on his allotment.

They told him to breathe normaly and keep coughing to stop things blocking up.

Take Care :D

That's what I've been told too but it really is a job making myself breathe deeply as it's so painful. I had a sneezing fit yesterday morning....that was fun :?

I went to A&E straight from getting the taxi home from Gatwick airport at 02.30 on Tuesday morning.
Can you picture it? Me walking in there as brown as I've ever been, pouring down with rain outside, telling them 'I think I've fractured a rib falling off a banana'!

I was absolutely exhausted. I didn't sleep on the flight at all as I terribly uncomfortable. I'd been up since 04.30 that morning to make the most of my last day in Egypt. I had to wait an incredible three hours! Even at that time on a Monday night! I was like the walking dead by the time I got home, I'd been up for nearly thirty hours allowing for the two hour time difference.

I was signed off work for two weeks but I suspect I may need longer. There's no way I'll be able to carry out my job if I'm still in pain. I'll review the situation at the end of the week, hopefully the pain will be easing a little by then.

Never been on a banana boat and don't intend to either.

You poor thing Pippy. I presumed you were still on holiday being as I hadn't seen you around.
I do hope you get better soon.
I nearly went on a banana while away, glad I didn't now.

Thank you Judy

The pain killers are really helping. I think I may stop taking them for a few hours on Friday to suss out whether or not I'm still in pain before I'm supposed to go back to work the following Wednesday. I don't want to work (my job's a very physical one) if the rib hasn't healed :?
