Ouch. Hope its getting better Pippy.

My brother went on a banana boat ride a few years ago in Malia. He is quite a dare devil and will try most things. This time, because the group of lads were clinging on to the banana boat and the driver couldn't get them off, he started doing "doughnuts" in the sea. Eventually they were all "thrown" off but it was pretty roughly done and my brother nearly drowned. They were being spun around so vigorously, that they all went flying and someone landed on top of him in the water and nearly knocked him out. He said he was very dizzy and disorientated and it wasnt very nice. He had several large bruises (I think the biggest one was to his ego  ) but thankfully, he was ok but he vowed he would never do anything like it again though.

Hope you get well soon.

Sarah :)

Hope you recover soon.

I love going on those banana boats..they terrify me and excite me at the same time, however, after reading about your unfortunate exploits Pippy, i think it has put me off somewhat as I am not the strongest of swimmers anyway. I bet the operators don't have appropriate insurance cover!!

'I think I've fractured a rib falling off a banana'!

Sorry Pippy that made me laugh

you really do need to breathe and cough though, if your suffering with your breathing I would return to the doctors and see what they say. I'll be seeing Dad later I will ask him if there is anything else he did or was told to do for you :D

Ooooh that sounds like a sore one Pippy :(
I'd put the same warning on Pedalos by the way - we hired a Pedalo in Salou yeeeears ago, when we pedalled out the waves were nice and calm - it was one of those pedalos with the slide on the front - i slid down the slide into the deep water but couldnt get myself back on the boat (So unfit!) so my mum and dad pedalled to shallower water so i could push myself back on, only to find that the tide had turned and the waves were huuuuge - the pedalo got hit side on and completely flipped over! Because we were in shallow water, the slide hit the sea bottom and we were all trapped underneath with the waves hitting the side and practically drowning. It was terrifying and put me off for life - never again!!!

Funniest part was, when someone finally flipped the pedalo the right way, the hire guy shouted over "You still have half an hour left"........eh no - you can keep your pedalo mate!

Hope you feel a bit better soon Pippy!

It may have been worth checking your travel insurance policy when you were still in Egypt Pippy.

We pay more than we could for a Nationwide annual policy, but that covers hazardous activities as long as they're a one-off holiday activity and not the main reason for the holiday.

Thanks for all your comments! :D

Luci, I suppose we should have checked  I think I was perhaps worried they'd hurt me if they touched it though! It's daft but for some reason I have more faith in medical care here at home which is silly as I've nothing to compare it with.

Had it been something serious I would of course have checked my insurance

One thing is for sure, between us the posters in this thread will have made others think twice about riding bananas!

I know what you mean about not trusting medical care abroad, which is daft when the UK is so far down the league table for medical care.

I had a dental abcess many years ago when we were in Las Vegas and San Fransisco. I wouldn't go to the dentist even though I was in mortal agony as it was the time when Aids and HIV first became known and I wasn't sure about needles, etc.

Oh God, I couldn't have dental treatment abroad! :?

Hey Pippy, lots of Italian tourists have all of their dental treatment in Mahdia Tunisia, because they say that it is better and certainly cheaper than over there. I don't know about that, but Frank's filling came out at the start of our last visit and he had to go to the dentist. It was a superb surgery - very modern and the lady dentist I'm assured, was most charming! Cost exactly same as UK. Having said all of that - neither of us would go within 100yards of an inflated banana!!! :D Jenny x

Have only been on a banana boat once and that was in Alcudia a few years ago.
The boat came beside us so it would flip us off but as I came down head first, I grazed the rope pulling us with my neck then got my leg hooked onto the rope by my knee and got dragged for a few seconds as the boat carried on with my head under water and my 1 leg above the water wrapped over the rope which was still travelling at speed. Managed to free myself eventually but thought my leg had been ripped off.
As you can imagine, the worst burn marks I've ever seen and as we had to fly back a few days later all my leg swelled up and had to be checked for DVT.
Still have the scars on my leg - Never again

How terrifying, that's dreadful!

I would never go on one of these things again. On our holiday in Tunisia last year my daughter (25) and I decided to go on at the end of the day. As no one else was waiting, the blokes that ran the watersports centre came on with us. They started jumping up and down etc and doing daft things. When we were tipped up, the chap behind my daughter held on to her and then when they were under the water he kicked out to surface. Needless to say that kick caused 2 broken ribs. We had a terrible job getting her back on the banana boat. Luckily we were flying home the following day. As she is a nurse she had to take a month off work and wasn't right for around 12 weeks. What started out as a bit of fun turned into a disaster.

I was so worried when I read the title for this thread! I've always wanted to take a trip on a banana boat and a friend and have promised ourselves that we'll do it when we both retire and will have the necessary time to dawdle around the Caribbean as it picks up its cargo around the Windward Isles etc. Mighty relieved to discover that Pippy's problem related to the other sort of banana boat :-)

Hope you recover soon,

Thanks SM

I think your banana boat will be considerably safer than mine was!

Helen, how awful :?

It was a nightmare! When I saw all the people queuing to go on them in Mexico last week, I felt like rushing over to tell them to keep off

I hate those things too!
I went on one in Turkey and when he turned sharply to throw us all off someone kicked me in the face as they came off. No damage done but very painful
To insult injury to injury they shouted out through the megaphone "Will that boy stay still in the water until the boat returns"
There was me thinking I looked like Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby with my new short haircut

Know how you feel Macca 90. When I was looking at my holiday pics last summer, I turned to my sister & said"Who on earth are those 2 fat ladies in those bandanas, what do they think they look like"!!!-----You got it, it was me & my sister. I was absolutely mortified. That bandana went straight to the bin - can't do anything about the body mind!

Well I was going to stop taking the pain killers for a couple of days at the end of this week in case they were hiding the fact I was still in alot of pain. No need to do that because I'm in alot of pain even WITH the pain killers :?

Going back to my GP today as I'm due to go back to work next Wednesday (was going to wait until Monday then realised that's a bank holiday). There's no way I'm going to be able to work with this pain, I can't even bend down to do up my trainers or put my socks on, I'm having to sit on the floor and curve my leg right round in order to reach my feet!

When I fractured a bone in my right foot a few years ago it took about seven weeks for the bad pain to subside. I'm hoping it won't be the same for this.
