Ouch, that feels painful
Very sensible idea to bring what seems like a harmless bit of fun (at the time) to the attention of the posters, until it goes wrong.
The hospital didn't strap mine up either, they told me the same thing, that they no longer do this
No, it is better not to strap because this can restrict the functions of the lungs. (depending on the fracture) the other ribs, muscles and cartilage naturally splinter any cracked/broken ribs, the problems arise if the fracture is not a "clean" one and the rib is displaced, this can perforate the lung.
I think you are being a bit optimistic thinking you will be fit for your type of work in a couple of weeks.
A good tip is to carry a cushion/pillow around with you and the next time you have a sneezing fit, then hold/press it against the chest, you may find that this helps with your breathing too.
Trying to breathe normally is painful, but shallow breaths is no good for the lungs, you'll end up with all kinds of gunk accumulating in them, easier said than done, but sit down hold/press a pillow to your chest and try a few times a day.
Take each day as it comes, it will slowly get better, but don't expect miracles to happen by next week.
