We are off to Malta tomorrow for a week and have booked our flights with Malta bargains(British Jet).
What i was wondering was is it first come first served as far as seats are concerned(no allocated seat numbers when checking in) like some other low cost airlines as i aint got a clue as we usually fly with Air Malta.
Any info on this would be great :D

Hi Jojouk, we used them in September and with the exception of the in flight meal we thought they were excellent, you are allocated seats and everything is all very civilised, you can even request extra leg room and if they have it so can you, the prices for drinks were also very reasonable, but going back to the food you could always take sandwiches and scoff them instead but you may enjoy the meal, horses for courses hey ?, out of interest where are you staying this time ?.

We are staying with family for a couple of days, then we are off to the Grand Hotel in Gozo for 3 days then back with family for the last 2 days,so at least we get 3 days to ourselves.

Be careful not to exceed your luggage allowence as I have heard that they are very strict and are charging accordingly!

Hi there :wave We have had items taken from our cases at Malta airport on a few occasions including the first time we went to Malta in 1986. I have learned from experience not to put anything of value in our cases

I also have had items stolen from suitcases, and quite a few parcels sent to me by airmail from UK "lost in the post."
I noticed at the Malta airport there is now a machine that "wraps" your suitcase in clear plastic for Lm1. OK, it is not going to stop anyone from breaking in your case, but they may think twice if they have to rip through plastic and it will make it more obvious to you when you reclaim your case at your destination that it has been tampered with.

When my MIL came back home from Malta after Christmas she opened her case to give us the ciggies she had got us and low and behold they had gone.
Myself and hubby carry anything of value and pressies in our hand luggage as Malta is getting worse for luggage theft.

These kind of incidents are in complete contrast to the general behaviour of the good people of Malta, all of us regular travellers to Malta will surely agree that the Maltese are some of the most, if not the the most friendly, helpfull and welcoming people you could ever wish to meet any where in the world.

Caw for now

I do agree with Sliema2 the Maltese are generally some of the friendliest people I've come across, but unfortunately it's impossible to generalise especially where people are concerned and in any society there will always be some bad eggs. These 'common' petty thieves need weeding out and dealing with!

i have found the maltease people to be the most honest, helpfull and friendly people in the world.
two years ago i was at the b'kara feast having a drink outside in the square, i then got up to see the statue coming out, i stupidly left my bag with my camera and other items in on the table. about twenty minutes later i remembered it and went back expecting it to be gone, but no it was still there. most of the incidents of crime in malta i find to be commited by foriegners. i feel safe in malta unlike in my own country.

Alan & Sliema2,

As you might both be aware my wife and son went out to Malta last month for a week and I had to stay at home because of work commitments. Believe me Malta is the only place I would be happy to let them go to on their own. That's the trust I personally have in the Maltese, - can I say any more?

My Mum aged 81 goes out to Malta on her own and has always felt very, very safe. She goes on the buses and takes herself off for long walks in the countryside.

We too think Malta is safe, and would not let her go on her own if we thought otherwise. She has made many friends there and spends quite a bit of her holidays visiting them!!

Obviously wherever you are you should be sensible and I think with regard to 'luggage theft' it is always best to err on the side of caution and put anything valuable in you hand luggage.

Yes, I also agree this is in complete constrast to the behaviour of the average Maltese, that is why I have often wondered if it is not the Maltese but the "the other end" who are to blame for luggage, and in my case also airmail parcels theft.
Malta is a safe country and the vast majority of Maltese are honest. I moved over here as a young single woman, I had no family here, but I never felt unsafe.
The incident that Alan descriped about leaving his camera behind in B'kara doesn't surprise me, I have had similar experiences myself. Only a few weeks back I realized the next morning I had lost my cross necklace. I retraced the route I had walked the previous day but couldn't see it. Without much hope I asked one of the girls at the supermarket, she asked me to describe it then with a huge smile she told me one of the cleaners had found it the previous evening. It would have been so easy for the cleaner to have just said nothing and slipped it in his/her pocket.
Yes, the few petty criminals are being dealt with hopefully. I remember reading that a man who stole a tourists handbag was given a 4 year sentence, the judge stated too many people's jobs were at risk should Malta get a bad name through crimes like this.

Well put ingliza. You have a good point about articles beig stolen from the other end. I was surprised that a Judge would dish out a 4 year sentence to that thief who stole that handbag because in the UK as you probably know, he would get off with just a warning. We could do with a few Maltese Judges here!

We were thinking about changing our suitcases which are the secure hard plastic digitally locked but relatively heavy type for lighter zip-upable types - but I don't think we'll bother!

BritishJet were superb apart from the inflight "meal" Yuk.

They gave us excellent service with our disabled child & even gave us an extra seat FOC so we could attend to him easily.
