Yes Shirley this is the same ship,goodness knows whats going to happen to her cruise itinery now,will Thomsons now have a rethink about using her next year?

The Calypso is in the new 2007 Thomsons brochure, advertised as the smallest ship in the fleet with 243 cabins, accomodating up to 486 passengers. Its also going to be Adults Only.
Based in Greece at mainly Thessaloniki, with some sailings from Cyprus.
Cabins look a good size but no good to me if I can't take the kids.

Well well well, the Calypso, what can I say.

I've been chatting to some of my buddies in the Thomson Fleet and can say this (although unofficial).

The ship had a small fire in the engine room, the damage was minimalbut it would appear to have caught all the headlines so the new ship reaction force could go out there and get themselves seen having only been setup a couple fo days before.

The fire was put out by staff without external assistance and is not the most uncommon thing on some ships.

The ship is still available for the new thomson hoidays next year as she was due in dock for painting and upgrades anyway part of which would have included a minor bit of work in the engine room.

The funny part I see of this is Thomson finally listening to the passengers who use them every year and have effectively brought back the Shapphire (a small ship, lost about 4 years ago). Some people want to the small ship attomosphere. Next they will bring one in about Topaz size. Lucky for me they never got the change to do anything to the Emerald who is now block chartered for 3 years (trust me).

Having read some of your mail over the past few months - I get the feeling that you really like the Emerald - can you tell me if there are facilities for dancing in the various lounges - we love to dance and have just been on the Spirit and spent a lot of time in the Horizon bar because we could listen to a trio and have a dance - we are considering the Emerald next year as we like the itinerary

By dancing do you mean proper dancing (ballroom, tango etc)

If this is the case yes, but in a limited capacity. There is one nice area with a good wood floor in the show lounge, but this is only available before the captains cocktail for an hour whilst the people are making there way in. Otherwise there is a small area in the lounge royal when the artists are singing, and they often ask if anyone wants to dance feel free. But this is usually packed with people who are dancing their own way.

Sorry if this dissapoints. However, in saying this, it would also depend on the demand. The Thomson staff are very accomodating

Hi all. Have just booked on Calypso for Oct 2007!!!!!! Sailed with Thomson on Topaz, Celebration, Destiny but have just returned from 8 days on the Costa Magica, so going from the sublime to the ridiculous some may think.

Wife and I not so sure however as 3,500 passengers does lack that cosy, friendly feeling, and also being somewhat on the small side, the places to be visited by Calypso do seem that bit different. Only time will tell.

Noticed the comment about the flat bottomed boat on the Cyprus/Egypt run. We went on one such boat which did roll somewhat, but if the brochures are anything to go by, we don't think it was Calypso. If it is, then it has under gone one hell of a refurbishment.

Will be interested to hear all and any comments once she starts sailing under the Thomson flag. Have asked for 'Thomson - Calypso' heading on the Review pages. Realize already a 'Calypso Cruise' but it might always be appreciated this is the same ship. (assuming it is the same ship of course)

They're adding the Calypso... Not sure when but I know it will be running by summer '07.

The ship is currently listed on the Thomson's website as the Calypso rather than the Thomson Calypso so the listing on the review site is correct.

The Emerald however is listed at the Thomson Emerald, but it should really just be the Emerald.

as the liner is smaller, its able to call at new smaller ports, ie libya.

Alan, I will look forward to hearing how the trip goes next October. It looks good, i've swung for the old black sea again on the Emerald as it looks like she may not be around much longer, with Thomson potentially looking for a big big ship to run the Eastern Med with. So i'm looking at next year may be a farewell cruise to the old girl.

If I have the time and money I have noticed some nice little short cruises may and june.

Looks as though Calypso starts cruising on the 7 April, so not that many weeks before, hopefully, we can start to see some reviews.

Yes, I am looking forward to it. I will enjoy reading the first reviews since her refit and remodel to Thomsons specs.

For anyone interested, I would keep an eye out for thomson's chartering a new ship this season. I gather they are looking to purchase a very large one, to rival the Costa's and ones like the Splender etc.

i am going on my first cruise on Saturday and I am stuck on the following.

Thomson Calypso

Can I charge my phone in the cabin. Thomson said I need a transformer, will a 110 adaptor not work
will my straightners work as well.

Can cope without phone but not straightners.

help please

I have merged your post with an existing topic on the Calypso.

An adpator will only make your appliances fit the sockets, it won't convert the voltage, for that you will need a transformer.

You won't be able to charge your phone in the cabin, but if you take it to the purser's desk along with the charger they should be able to do it for you.

Your straighteners may work, but they won't get as hot as at home so won't work as well. I believe that GHD now produce dual voltage ones. If there is no hairdryer in the cabin, you can usually borrow one from the purser's desk.

You don't know the new rules on taking gas straighteners on planes.

I suppose I will have the same problem charging my MP3 player as well.

Will I be Ok buying a cheap dual voltage straightener from Argos.

I don't know about straighteners, sorry, but always take a dual voltage hairdryer abroad and it has been fine on ship and land.
