Luci - they've obviously changed the smoking rules on the Marco Polo between our 2 cruises - I wonder when, and why..... Maybe that applies throughout the cruise industry now, e.g. if the latest refits have included fire-resistant materials. Difficult to see how that can apply to sheets and towels, though....

MEH - someone at my bank told me that M&S do the best exchange rates.

Cruiser (and everybody interested in currency matters) - I thought it was best never to use either credit or debit cards abroad, even in ATMs, as no matter how good the exchange rates are you'll always get charged some fee or other which will more than wipe out any savings on exchange rates.

Tony W - happy belated birthday - and thanks for forgiving me. And that goes for everyone else who's done so, too :!: :!:

You do get a better rate of exchange using your card but there is also a charge added to your account depending on the amount you withdraw.

The Nationwide Flexaccount (debit) card is the only one which doesn't charge any commission or transaction fees for withdrawing cash abroad. It was absolutely brilliant to use on a cruise in Europe before the euro came in. With each country having its own currency and only being there one day it was great to be able to withdraw small amounts to cover coffees, etc without being thumped each time with a transaction fee.

Other banks charge 1.5-2.5% with a minimum of £1.50 per transaction which is 15% if you are only wanting to withdraw £10.

As usual, I seem to have started something with the smoking comment!

Personally, I don`t mind either way about smoking in the Cabin.......I am more than happy to pop outside and have a ciggy! (Even if tornados hit the MED!!!)

If I do end up sharing with somebody, as I have offered and they turn out to be a non-smoker, I wouldn`t dream of smoking in the room/cupboard that we are likely to have.

I will be far too busy playing my full drum-kit all night!! :rofl :rofl

........and very nice ladies underwear as well.

Regarding being prescribed on the National Health. Is your waiting time shorter?

Of course it is.........most of my referrals die laughing so there is no waiting list...........perhaps that could be the solution to the NHS waiting lists yet to be announced by the major political parties!

Hi Tony,
I hope you had a great birthday and got the desired modish string vest among your presents!

You have worked on ships so you will know that 'popping' outside for a cigarette can necessitate a journey of marathon proportions! You could pop out for a puff and come back really puffing!

Hi All,
Just an update to tell you that I will not be travelling on the 16th May, I have had a set back and the medical people have advised against me travelling, so with regret I have cancelled, if someone is quick you might get these dates ???
I asked the people at R~~E if I could changed dates but a definate no way was all that was offered, the small print states I am liable for full costs and that the cruise is non transferable, so there we go.
I will keep you posted and good luck to all the successfull cruisers, enjoy it and have a ball.
I will be popping in from time to time just to see how things are going, but I am now confined to barracks, bye for now.

Tony, (H.B.for Y.)

First we had the sling backs, now M&S ladygruds, I think l speak for quite a number of us when l say it's a worry that if you do share a cabin with a stranger, you should think about wearing Harvest Drawers. "All is safely gathered in"

Whilst on the subject of lingerie, does anyone know if Tenalady do thongs and strings? A friend of mine was wondering.

Luci, I do have the right card for freebie cash. I shall go and see them again regarding the ATM. abroad thing. Thanks for your help.

Joan.

Hello Dave, I'm very sorry to hear your news, and after all that hard work to get your cruise too. Sorry to hear too that the travel company has been so strict with the terms and conditions that apply to transferability - it's not as if they have followed their other terms and conditions to the letter, is it? In your situation I'd have hoped for a bit of leniency. I may be in a similar situation when the time comes as I don't keep in the best of health either - my travel insurance is good but they will only refund the money paid and not the true value of the holiday.

Hope you feel better soon.

In the midst of the bad news about David, there is one little bright light, Tone has got his documents! That's great news Tone!

Sorry to hear you are not well and unable to travel, David.

Nice one Tone...........you can stop sweating profusely now!

David,

Just a thought, but did you not have a cruise allocated then cancelled?

If so, it may be worth arguing that you were well enough at the time and would have gone if they had not breached there contract/promise with you. After all, nobody has been on a cruise within the advertised time in the original T&C`s............which I believe stressed that all cruises must be taken by a certain date, which has passed.

Has the anguish caused by the way you have been treated regarding this cruise contributed to your ill health? There is usually more than one way of skinning a cat!

I certainly would not rush to pay them any money until at least you find out who is going to sue them for the swathe of broken promises and contracts that trail behind them.

Good luck & speedy recovery,

TonyW

Just like you always do Tony, straight to a salient point!

One also has to hope that the insurance sold to David covers him for this eventuality and even if he has received his insurance policy from them. Any time I have purchased insurance from a travel agent, the operative date has always been the date of the booking.

HI all,
I purchased my insurance when allocated cruise through R**e at a cost of £35, I am hoping they will foot the bill, in contact with insurers today and they are sending out a claim form, Peter A also pointed me to a site where I can print one off, both parties asked me to put in writing I was cancelling cruise on medical grounds, this I also did today, I just have to wait and see how both parties play their roles, I will however keep you all posted.
And Tony, I do think they could have came and went, but no chance I was qucikly reminded of T&Cs. ( NO LEWAY AT ALL )
To be fair I was allocated a cruise, my accident prevents me from going, so who's fault is it ( the bl**dy bus drivers who hit me ??)
So people be aware of my circumstances and learn from it, read the small print, make sure your insurance will cover full costs and medical cancelation, we all assume it wont happen to us, but it can and does, so just mind and check the small print and ask a few questions.
To all those going soon enjoy it and have a ball, I will be keeping a wee eye on things here, once again thanks for all the kind PM's and support you are all great.

:bow :bow :bow :glynis :glynis :gluck :thanks
When better I might pick up a wee cheapy and just :fly
Bye for now Dave

In view of Davids problem, I for one will be examining the small print in my insurance policy! Forewarned is forearmed as they say!

Just as a matter of interest these are MSC's cancellation charges:

More than 63 days before departure = Loss of Deposit
63-42 days before 25%
41-29 days before 40%
28-15 days before 60%
14- 4 days before 80%
3 days to day of departure 100%

Davids cruise falls withing the 41-29 days (16th May)

One has to wonder if the travel agent can impose different cancellation charges to the tour operator?

David,

Sorry to hear what has happened to you.

It makes you think and I'm wondering what would happen if, instead of cancelling the cruise, you had just not gone.

Does that make sense?. Instead of telling them that you want to cancel the cruise you just leave it open but don't go on the plane or boat?.

Daveoc, that is exactly what I was thinking. I am sure that a cruise company would not report you to your travel agent that you were a no show - after all, they have already been paid for the cruise and it would make little difference to them - it would even give them a spare cabin to offer if they had complaints from any individual about an unsatisfactory cabin, and on the flight side, people fail to turn up for flights day in day out.

Now that it is apparent that R*** enforce that particular condition and under no circumstances will offer an alternative, it seems the logical thing to do as you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, especially if R*** want the full price of the cruise from you and the insurance company will only cover what you personally actually paid. If there is an insurance excess, that would be more than £10 (for a £10 cruise) in any case as it is usually something like £35 or £50. In fact, do R*** mean you are liable for the price they have negotiated with the cruise company or the actual full brochure price being charged?

R*** could even be trying to make some money out of misfortunes like this, as they may only have so far paid the deposit to the cruise company and not the balance.

I was thinking along these lines as well, but I think Rise have thought of it too!

There was a paragraph at the bottom of the Reservation Form which says:

"IF YOU DO NOT TRAVEL FOR ANY REASON YOU WILL BE LIABLE FOR A CANCELLATION FEE. THE FEE WILL RELATE TO THE ACTUAL COST OF THE CRUISE PACKAGE BOOKED, THIS WILL BE ADVISED TO YOU AT THE TIME OF THE BOOKING."

Another thought - if the flight is delayed and you miss the ship, you would presumably have to pay the full price for the holiday. Not all policies I looked at pay out for missed departure (Boots, which I have, does - but it wouldn't come anywhere near the actual cost of holiday).

Was anyone advised the actual cancellation cost at time of booking, as stated above, because although I was told my holiday was worth x amount, I wasn't given a cancellation cost?
