I don't think anyone is doubting the advice re the E111, they are just voicing their concerns and questions, which is what HT is all about. Your advice is very sound BTW.

Yes you should go ahead and get an E111 as it will do no harm to have one. As I said previously, I have one even though it is not a requirement of my insurance policy. Should you ever have the need to use it, this will not preclude you from having the proper, private treatment your insurance policy provides.
As has already been stated,
some, not all, insurance companies require you to have it as a condition of your policy so that they can recoup some of the costs of treatment. In some instances it may save you having to pay the excess of £50 and upwards.
Travel insurance can be a minefield. The Nationwide is using a different underwriter this year and the excesses have gone up from £35 to £50 for most events. However I am now covered for a pre-existing condition which was not covered previously.
