Hi claremcc
i went to the DR in July this year and i took my GHD straightners with the correct adaptor, but because the GHD's dont have a voltage switch, they didnt get anywhere near hot enough to straighten my hair. i'm not even sure if straightners even have a voltage switch, as they need to get very hot to do their job!
So ultimately i had to either tie my hair up every night (its shoulder length), or i too put up with a mass of curls, which on some nights when it wasnt too humid, didnt look too bad!
So best bet is to leave the straightners at home and think of ways to jazz up your hair with bobbles, clips and hairspray!!
good luck and have fun X

Thanks for the reply. My straighteners haven't got a voltage switch either so guess I will take your advice and leave them at home
Thanks
Clare
I,m going to the dominican next week and dreaded not being able to use my straighteners, so I bought some Braun (gas) straighteners from E Bay. Tried them and found they don't get anywhere near as hot as normal ones but suppose they'll have to do.

I had a look in Argos and they sell travel straighteners which have a voltage switch on them and they are only £10.
I will be getting some to take with me dont know if they will be any better than the gas ones but worth a try I suppose.

off to dom rep in dec. im lost without my straightners, is it humid in dec? dont want my hair to look like a stick of candyfloss when it frizzes. guess ill have to tie it up or curl it instead. do curling tongs heat up over ther?
Remember your hairdryer more than likely won't work either (mine didn't) so if you want any kind of hair style you need to use the useless one that comes in the bathroom.
I have noticed that unlike our domestic electric supply, the Dominican Republic is 110v and I was wondering how this effects the charging of camcorders, mp3's etc.
I have a battery charger that I use for AA and AAA batteries, digital camera and mp3 player, all which require to be recharged. My mobile, I can live without as I am on holiday!
I've seen that hair straighteners are practically a no go but seeing as I am a bloke with short hair, this doesn't affect me but I expect my wife will accuse me of being selfish!
Many thanks for any info given.

I've just noticed that on ebay, there are "step up" voltage adapters available that allow uk items to be used in North America etc with no loss of power.
The question is ........Has anyone used or bought one of these and do they work???.

Hi there.
Hi does anyone know if we need a voltage converter for our digi camera and video in the dominican republic
no, you won't need one. Just a 2 flat pin adapter for the 3 pin plug. Most chargers for cameras etc can be used on supplies from 50-250v to give the 6-12v output so the transformer will work just fine.

many thanks for info dazbo
i purchased the step up adapter and all it did was blow the fuse on my ghds thank goodness ghds come with a built in euro plug. simply unscrew the main plug and hey presto, admittedly they wont heat up above 110v but they will survice, alternatively you could purchase a set of worldwide straighteners of ebay they go for about £15 just double check with the sell that they are 110v or they will be of little use to you.
